I just got a phone call from some random number with an 876 area code. I picked up, said hello a few times and no one answered so I hung up. A second later I got a text saying whoever it was had missed a call from me and they wanted my name and address.
I told him I didn't call him and I didn't give out my personal information to people I don't know.
The message I got back was "Hey there nothing to be scared of my dear. Am very friendly. You don't like Jamaican?" (he had mentioned he was jamaican in the first text)
He called two more times and I hung up on him. The last one I didn't answer.
Then my dads cell phone got a call and it was from the same person. I am freaking out now. My dad's number is the same as mine except for the last number. Mine ends in a six and his ends in an eight. Is it possible the guy was just running down a list of numbers. If that's the case my mom will get a call to, I'll have to ask her when she gets home.
I looked up the area code and it really is Jamaica. I'm in South Carolina. I don't know what to think.

I don't really think it's anything to be scared of. It sounds exactly like he's running down a list of numbers for whatever reason. I have no doubt that if you hadn't texted anything back to him, you would have never heard from him again.
I have no idea what kind of reaction or attention or whatever-it-is he's looking for, but you didn't give it to him.

I'd be a little bit concerned about it if it was me ... maybe you can find a way to bar his number just in case

That is interesting New Jersey. I wonder if that counts for texts as well, because I did call him.
I looked up the number and found a place where I can file a complaint so I'm doing that now.

Ah, I heard about that scam a few months ago. How sneaky of them... D:
Anyways, I usually don't pick up numbers from area codes I'm not familiar with, and I advise others to do the same.
Although once, I did have some person in my area code repeatedly calling me asking for a guy named "Guillermo." Fuck Guillermo. ):<

I don't answer calls that aren't in my area code, my friend's area code (which sometimes I ignore, since it starts with an 8), or my sister's number.
I did once dial my sister's number wrong. I switched the first two numbers on accident. Some guy answered, and I was asking if my sister was there. I thought it was someone she knew, 'cause her and her boyfriend have a lot of friends that I don't know. He said she wasn't there, and I was like "OK then." and was going to hang up. Then, he asked me on a date. I was like, "Um, no, thank you. Have a good day." And I hung up. Then, I realized I'd dialed the wrong number. My mom's crazy, though. She was telling me I should have said yes to going on a date. With some guy I've never met? Yeah, sure, whatever. He'd probably to turn out to be like Ted Bundy or something. She's always telling me I should agree to go on a date with guys who ask me, like my brother's friend last night. I did agree to go to wrestling with him if he gets tickets, though. And if he gets really good seats, I agreed to hold his hand... (We joke that way all the time. I'm not really a golddigger.)

I got quite a few prank calls in the past. Annoying but they stop after I pick up once they say some stupid like, "Fuck you" or "I miss you baby" etc etc. Still piss me off tho.

I never answer my landline. I wait til they're rung off then use 1471 and see who it was. Last call was a number I didn't know, so I tapped it into Google and it showed up on a website that lists telemarketers numbers. It showed up there as a number that's rented out to whichever company wants to cold call people at the moment >_>
Apparently AOL broadband uses it a lot. In that case they should check their records, as I already use AOL broadband! Morons.

I use to get a bunch of random calls to my cell phone, all for Gretchen and Anise. (possible misspellings?) For the longest time I thought it was arbitrary and people dialed the number wrong but it looks like my cell number is a recycled one. It was kind of strange, I'd get a couple calls a week for those two and then I stopped picking up numbers I didn't recognize. I once got a voice mail for them inviting one to a birthday party... I wound up calling that person back to explain it was the wrong number.
It's probably a scam if he's running down a list of number.

Rented out numbers for telemarketers.... weird.
I'd never return a call to a number I don't recognize. If it's really important, they can call back later.
It must have been a scam, because I got called back several times when I picked up the first time, but my dad only got the one call. I never found out if my mom's phone was called.
I can't believe this guy has got nothing better to do then go down a list of phone numbers and call all of them. At least telemarketers are trying to sell something.

1) No, but I got a weird IM on yahoo, about some girl criticizing my love for the punk-goth style, saying it's trash and all...
2) We kinda argued for a while, and I decided not to deal with the issue further so I just ignored her, at the same time calling her a $lut in my head... :P

Personally, I think she has nothing to do in life. XD

Ehh. I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm sure it'll be okay. If you're that paranoid, ask to change your number.
I usually get random phone calls from places. Such as, Texas, Maryland, Missouri, etc.
Well, I never pick up for numbers I don't know.
But, my friend picked up my phone when a random number called and played jokes on them.
For instance, they would wait until the person is done talking, and then say "Oh, could you repeat that. I wasn't listening". It's funny. They would go on and on. >_>
Or say "Stop calling me! It's over!".

Yeah, actually I have.
Okay, I think it was just a telemarketer, however, they made a point of leaving several messages on my phone telling me that I'd won something and all I had to do was call the number back and give them my address.
I completely ignored the messages, deleted them. Who ever it was quit calling after a few days.
No, I don't think so. Just stop picking up the phone when the guy calls, he'll get bored and call someone else.

Wow. No. I never pick up the phone if I don't recognize the number...unless it's local and then I can rule out a telemarketer call usually. I love caller ID - it's so much easier to screen calls than having to do the method Jelly does (1471 I think it was?).
Text messages I'll respond to and I've gotten into some interesting conversations with random people! Most of the conversations were when I had the unlimited text bundle and I figured what's the harm. When you set up an account you get a recycled phone number so I've talked to people all over...One guy said he was California. I didn't see any harm in it since there's really no way for him to trace me. :P

Yes, a few times but not recently. Most of the times, they were actually text messages instead of calls.
Well, I got a call from a few young girls. and I think they were prank calling because they just kept calling and calling nonstop and I heard lots of laughter behind. I just asked them who they were and they laughed so it just got me really annoyed...
The text messages are usually from random numbers that always have those messages asking for your name and if you want to date etc. They are usually sent by those lonely men who have no one to talk to and try to make conversations on the phone. So getting those is actually no surprise here since its quite a norm...
For the girls, I just scolded them... which didn't work since I got so annoyed I probably may have used some foul language but it only seemed to make them laugh more which irritated the hell out of me so I just ignored their calls after that.
As for the text messages, yeah, of course I ignore them. I just delete them because they don't really mean anything.
Unless he has a way of tracking you down, I don't feel there's anything for you to be afraid of. I mean, like I said, these are usually just lonely bored men who feel like they need someone to talk to so just ignore it because they might come off creepy. No worries ^^"

This is pretty interesting. I didn't think about the fact that the Carribbean was an international call but now that I think about it, it makes sense.
On the topic of strange phone calls though, I have gotten a few strange phone calls. I never answer them and they're usually from California. My phone has a nice feature that says where the phone number is from. The strangest phone call that ever got was from 555-555-5555. It was during the middle of a lecture though so I couldn't answer it.

When I first got my cell, I kept getting calls from this crazy girl that wouldn't believe that she called the wrong number, I told her that I just got the phone and that maybe it belonged to this guy before but not anymore. She kept calling for a few days getting irate, but finally she got it and didn't call back.
My mum's is funnier, she gets calls all the time from random women looking for a guy named Frank, looks like ol' Frank has been messing around....a lot. The weird thing though is that she also got a couple of calls from the police and something called crime net looking for Frank too. So apparently the guy who had the number before her was pretty interesting.
