I wrote this first piece as a Creative Writing assignment in college. I flunked the assignment. My prof was not one for abstract work, he also hated Science Fiction with a passion. So it ammused me that I flunked on the first non Sci-fi I turned in So I hope you appreciate it more.
My Rose.
The butterfly fluttered its wings and landed softly on the velvet petal. It extended its long tongue and drank the sweet nectar. With a smooth movement of the wings the butterfly lifted into the air and was off. Several others came to my rose that day, taking its nectar and pollen away. People came and went checking monitors and tending to other worries. They do that a lot, it bothers me a bit. Can’t they find someone else to hover over? They left and I watched my rose. When night came, we slept together my rose and I. In the morning a man came and cut off my rose. I watched the green leaves, until they turned brown and fell. There were no more roses for me to watch. Then the snow time came. With it came the uninviting cold, and the precise static beauty of snow. Most of that time I slept with little to bother me. Then came the spring. Soon a new rose bobbed its soft head in the wind. I had a new rose to watch, and share the long hours with. Soon ether nature or man will take this one away.
Why didn’t I stop the man? Why did I just lie here and let him take my rose away? There are two reasons why I did not stop him. One I know that roses are transitory and ergo they go, sooner rather than later. Second, I will tell you the second reason tomorrow.
Don’t forget to check the monitors on your way out.
