The first episode from Elfen Lied blow me right off my socks. The blood went everywhere and you would see that they are scared out of their mind. XD
Other than that, it has a very good story line, which makes it even better. ^=^
In September I am going to Abunai (event). I am going to look for the manga there, haven't read it. Hopefully it will be good as the anime.
Ah, Elfen Lied! The music! The othering! The Klimt in the OP! The references to medieval chant! Bu the blood... and the overlarge eyes... and the way whosiewhatsie the older girl is automatically "mom" just because she's the oldest girl. There's a lot to not like about the show, but the quality of the storyline, the way it makes the viewer's morals just fly out the window: who's right? who's wrong? After a while it seems like no one's right at all.
I really have to read the manga sometime; I heard it's much more involved and explanatory, particularly about the mutations.
It is a lovely series, both manga and anime. I own the box set for it, and I would say that even the box itself is fairly impressive. Found out about it initially through an AMV on YouTube that took bits of it and paired it up with Marilyn Manson's cover of 'This is Halloween'. Still probably my favorite AMV.
Anyways, the anime wasn't bad. I didn't care too much for the english voice cast, but it seems that I really rarely ever do. The quality of the animation was a little odd, I can't make up my mind on if it was a little bit above average or a little bit below average. The opening, though, that was and still is a magnificent opening. The characters developed fairly well, and save for a few things here and there, behaved believably enough.
The manga, that was wonderful. While the anime wasn't bad by any means, the manga just took the entire thing to a whole new level. Lucy becomes ten different types of awesome, and the horror element reaches a high far beyond what the anime managed to reach. The ending was as well much more satisfying, if also much more saddening.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy the manga, or find it, um, elsewhere? How many volumes is it? I ask because I found it elsewhere, but it's a pain to read on the computer, I confess. And there's nothing quite like having the physical manga, flipping pages and such.
I thought the anime was very good... but it was very sad too. The story was so well written... I also liked the sci-fi aspects of the diclonious. It was something different.
I would really love to read the manga.
Watched the show and really enjoyed it, so I'm going to read the manga now. :O
I'm surprised that it hasn't been released officially in English, I mean, it's pretty damned popular.....
I'd believe issues with companies trying to get the rights is more likely than the violence or gore... O_O; I've seen far worse mangas get published in English.
Yah. I'm going to use Manga Fox as well, I was just surprised that it hasn't been published in English yet.
Ah well, at least we have it on the internet. X3
aurora26, please warn people of spoilers. It's a rule of this site. Not to nag you... but most people don't want to know what happens till they see it.
i haven't watched the anime. I've only read the manga. God it made cry so much, it was such a wonderful story. I really wish kohta and nya would have stayed together but it would have been impossible knowing that she killed his family and such, that and i hated his cousin she was so annoying, i do not approve of that incest, but what ever it doesn't matter
I wonder if the "cousin" label just means that they're related somehow, not actually first cousins. I've only seen the anime, which doesn't make it explicit. Does the manga?
There are lots of cultures (including our own, until recently) when marrying one's cousin was perfectly okay. Genetically, I've heard, it doesn't pose any unique problems, the way marrying a sibling would. But yeah, I find it squicky, too.
