I have a number of gmail accounts (I think the number is 3) which all forward to my main one. Hotmail/Windows Live confuses me.

Yeah, if gmail gets similar emails it groups them together and as well as being handy for things like Facebook notifcations it shoves all of the Gaia newsletters and announcement emails into one handy message I can just delete.
