I'm working my way through a collection of his short horror tales that my brother let me borrow, and I'm quite impressed with this man! His style is marvelous. The descriptions and details he gives are so bizarre and out of this world. I'm loving every minute. Stephen King hails him as the unsurpassed greatest horror author of the 20th century, and I have to agree, as much as I enjoy King.
For any lover of horror stories, I'd definitely recommend picking up a copy of his work.

I just finished "The Call of Cthulhu" recently. Entertaining, mind-boggling, and chilling to the bone. Quite happy with this, I can easily say, my new-found favorite author. I have yet to decide, but I think I'll either dive into "The Colour Out of Space" or "The Shadow over Innsmouth" next.

So, what's your opinion on H. P. Lovecraft and his eerie tales?

EDIT: Crap, messed that poll up. I was intending it to be a "Thumbs up/down" thing, but for some reason, wrote "yes/no." What the heck. D:

Yes, H. P. Lovecraft is good. I have read quite a few of his stories, and liked most of them. I think the only one I didn't like much was "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath." It was too long and confusing. I didn't even finish it.

I really like how he takes things that are seemingly normal then slowly distorts them until you start questioning what is real and what isn't.

While I did just recently read Call of Cthulu myself, it wasn't quite as much as I had hoped. I guess with such a buildup I have been getting from the Sci-Fi community it only turned out average. Its a bit challenging to keep in mind that back when he wrote such things, this was new and eerie.

It is also a bit challenging to adjust to different writing styles once one has gotten used to reading more modern forms of prose.

Patience is required for this man's work. It tends to fall in the extremes of the good-bad spectrum - some works being utter rubbish, and others being very good and fairly thought-provoking. There are also aspects of his works that I do not like, especially regarding racism, that bother me. Overall - pretty decent.

I have a compilation book of his work. It's brilliant.

What did you find brilliant about it? Any story or novel in particular that you like most?

Wow, I was beginning to think there would be no responses to this thread. Good to see something!

@luckinspades - I've heard from many that as a standalone, Call of Cthulhu wasn't so good, and that you have to read the other related stories to really get something from it. Personally, I got plenty from Call of Cthulhu, I thought it was gold... I guess it just depends on the personal tastes?
I don't read so much modern writing, either, so maybe that was part of it. I much prefer a good ol' book.

@Itsumou - lol k

@Kollusim - I have heard that there is some questionable content as far as racism in his works, but you've got to understand the time period in which this man lived and wrote. Back then, it wasn't really questionable to write those things, and it was, unfortunate as it may be, something of a general consensus. Bear in mind the spirit of the age when reading a piece from a given period.

Oh I understand that perfectly. I just don't like it.

Really all of the stories were great. I believe my favourites were The Colour Out of Space, The Rats In The Walls, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. I like how he really gets you to know the characters before starting the actual story. It makes it more personal and disturbing; I love it.
