What is a dream, but a figment of the imagination?

When Euræa looked at the darkness of the void, and the water-fire elemental before her, her heart was wrecked with sadness and anger. She looked at the darkness once more, and sent a last blast of magick at it. She did not know that this would be her last in her current life.
‘Euræa, you were supposed to be the one!’ The darkness formed the shape of a young man. He held the Elemental’s broken body, and glared daggers at Euræa.
‘I will give you a choice. You can either end it here, and never be reborn, or you can go to Saarteph, and face your fate there.’
‘What does it matter? I’ll die either way, and I’d rather face Saarteph than a creature of the void such as you.’ Euræa spat at the man.
‘Very well then. You shall go to Saarteph. Now leave, before I kill you anyway.’

Euræa wandered the battle-wrecked fields of Daelethor. It had been only a few days after the war ended, and Vasdar had been trapped. The Elementals had disappeared, and the Gray Entities were gone as well. Only Euræa stood on the battlefield, and even she was fading fast. She looked at the six other light entities and awaited their punishment.

Euræa the Pure, pure no more. Saarteph said coolly. You shall be stripped of your magick, and you shall die on Earth as a human.
For what crime am I punished? Euræa asked Saarteph as he touched her forehead, stripping her of the magick that fed her lifeline.
You loved a Dark Entity, and killed the Elementals. It is not in the Light Code of Magick to kill or mingle with those of other kin.

It was no sin to love. Euræa knew that. She knew that she had loved Révaréan, and she had made her choice to stay with him and follow him into the dark. She closed her eyes and felt her body start to decay.
Falling into the familiar arms of the darkness, she heard Révaréan’s voice.
‘I’ll follow you into the dark.’

Euræa fell. She fell through thousands of universes, and thirteen realms. By the time she hit the ground of Earth, she was dead already, long decayed, and withered.

Sparks and Spells
A Novel

Chapter One: Emmuska Mason’s Strife

Emmuska Mason slept in her bed. Her auburn hair wrapped around her face made her look like an angel. She whimpered in her sleep, for she had dreamt of the War of Magick. She had seen dead Révaréan waiting in his castle Daelethor, and she had seen Anzérué awake in his castle of light. Oh! How she hated the light! How it had stripped her in her dreams, and wrapped its arms around her waist, calling! Ever calling to her!

If only she could wake up. It wasn’t that hard, was it, to wake up? It wouldn’t be that hard after she stopped dreaming. Her blood boiled as she thought about the Light, and what it had done to her. Sometimes, she wondered what exactly the Light had done to her. It wasn’t a natural thing, she was sure of that. It wasn’t something that she could forgive either, and she saw it in her dreams, what had happened, that is, but when she woke, she couldn’t remember it. She felt like she was bleeding out from the heart, but it was only when she looked at the light. No, Emmuska was not worshipping anything dangerous, and she was relatively normal for a human girl, but she did have a secret that not even she knew about. It was something that she couldn’t speak about to anyone. Her voice gave out whenever she tried to speak of her dreams, and soon after, she would forget what she was saying. What was this strange ailment of the mind that she had?

‘Saarteph!’ she cried in her slumber, for he was the one to strip her of her magick. He was the one who punished her for loving the dead Révaréan, of whom she was sure, loved her back. She was sure that Saarteph had punished her because he could not feel the emotions that she felt. Then again, was it really a curse to be human? For when she was human, no matter how much her heart bled, she would always live on. Her soul could not die if she was human, for a human soul was the one immortal thing that she had left. Even immortals, although not able to be killed in natural ways, could die.

‘Emmuska, it’s time for school!’
It was her mother, Anna. Emmuska opened her eyes and gasped. She was late, wasn’t she? What did it matter? Professor Freeman knew well that she was often late since her accident, which had left her insane and miserable. Emmuska knew she wasn’t normal, she knew that there was something about her that wasn’t like anyone else. Her best friend, Erin, had tried to help her unlock the secrets of her mind, but nothing seemed to work.
‘Emmy!’
Emmuska sat up and slipped out of her nightgown, and into her clothes. She headed downstairs, took her book-bag, and headed out the door.
‘Emmuska, wait!’ her mother called to her as she ran down the street.

Emmuska Mason didn’t look back. She didn’t know though, why she didn’t’ want to look back. She looked at the looming school in the distance and sighed as she came closer and closer to it. Her life had never been as strange, and the world seemed to spin around her. It wasn’t just a normal life anymore. It was the light, and the dark, forming a perfect gray, that would engulf her mind and soul.

‘Emmuska Mason. Where have you been?’
Professor Freeman didn’t turn to look at the young woman walking into the classroom.
‘Em!’
Emmuska’s best friend, Erin, smiled and motioned to the seat next to her so Emmuska could sit down.
Emmuska smiled at her friend and sat in the seat. She looked at her paper and wrote a few notes on the page, before realizing what she was doing. The notes were not in English. They were in strange runes, that she could not read, but somehow, she understood.
‘Overslept, eh? I bet it was something more.’ Erin said with a sly grin, breaking the silence between her and Emmuska.
Emmuska looked at Erin and smiled. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’
Erin laughed. The class paused to look at the Wiccan, who seemed quite amused by something.
‘Of course, Em. You know nothing about what’s going to happen.’

‘Professor, I need help on this question!’
Danny Fisher’s voice cut through Erin’s laughter. Danny was the valedictorian of the class, and preparing to go into law school. Professor Freeman’s eyes drifted to Danny.
‘Nonsense, Daniel. You know you can do that problem. It’s only a matter of whether you want to do it or not.’
Danny looked at his book. ‘Yes Professor, you’re right.’

The bell rang soon after Danny’s question. Erin and Emmuska quickly got up and left the classroom. Danny followed close behind.
‘Emmy!’
Emmuska turned and faced Danny. There was something about the strawberry-blonde boy that made her shiver. It was something uncanny. Nonetheless, she could talk to her best friend from pre-school.
‘What is it?’
‘Are you getting a ride home to-day?’
‘No. I’m walking.’
‘Want me to walk you home?’
Emmuska looked at Danny and shivered. She blushed and looked at her feet.
‘I would… very much enjoy your company.’ She said, a smile spreading across her face.
Danny nodded and headed off to his next class. Erin looked at Emmuska and laughed her hearty laugh. She was amused by Danny and Emmuska’s relationship, because deep down, she knew that there was something more to them. It was something that she could not explain, but it was there.

***

When the school day was through, Emmuska and Danny walked home together. Danny held Emmuska’s hand, and clenched something else tightly in his other. It was a golden ring. Summer would be soon, and he and Emmuska would go their separate ways, but he didn’t want to lose her. He planned to propose to her the day she was to leave for college. Unfortunately, Daniel Fisher’s story was coming to an end.

‘Emmy,’ Danny asked as he noticed his friend’s silence, ‘what is it that bothers you?’
Emmuska looked up. She didn’t know how to respond. It wasn’t a question she could respond to, and it wasn’t something she could respond to. She smiled at her lifelong friend, and shook her head.
‘There’s nothing wrong, Danny.’ She said softly. Unfortunately, there was something wrong. There was a lot wrong, and she couldn’t help but feel that the end was nigh. What would it take to make the most rational person she knew believe her when she said there was something more to her? When would she be able to tell Danny how she felt, and why they couldn’t stay together? When would she be able to wake up from her horrible nightmare?

When they reached Emmuska’s house, Danny looked to the sky. It looked like rain. He opened the door for her, and she stepped in the house. Before she parted from him, he kissed her lips gently, and looked into her eyes.
‘Never forget that I love you.’ He said as she looked away.
‘Danny, we’re both seventeen. We can’t commit ourselves to such things yet. Imagine all the years we have ahead of us to change and grow! Who knows where our paths will lead us, whether it be to the good or to the bad... Danny, I’m afraid I can’t say the same… not yet.’
Danny looked at Emmuska and smiled. He then said something completely unexpected.
‘The time is nigh, Emmuska Euræa. My story ends here, but yours will continue for years to come. I love you. Never forget that.’
Emmuska gasped. What was Danny talking about? Who was this Euræa he spoke of?

Then it all came back to her. She was Euræa. It must have been her. She was the one in all of her dreams, all of the visions, all of the prophecies. Before she could ask Danny what was going on, he had vanished.

***

‘Emmuska? Are you home?’
Emmuska looked around the house for her mother, who seemed to be cooking something. It looked good enough to eat. She nodded at her mother as she passed by, and headed up to her room. There was nothing she could do then. Danny was gone, and she could not locate him. Every time she tried to call his cell-phone, she only got a series of whispers in what seemed to be a very ancient or made up language. It was no use. Danny Fisher was gone forever, but Emmuska did not know that another would come into her life sooner than she expected.

It's pretty good, but there's more you can do to improve this. In some parts of this story, you provide the reader with a bit of imagery, but then some of the description stops and doesn't travel for the person to keep up their imagination whilst reading it! I suggest you add more detail to it, or take some out. Other than that, it's a pretty good set, and an interesting story line. :)

Ah! Thank you! I haven't ever had anyone give me any constructive criticism, or criticism at all on my writing...

I'll try to fix that as soon as possible!

Patience is a virtue~
I'm currently working on a coupe of side projects, like creating the language for my novel, and it's holding me up a bit...
