This role-play is a growing and expanding system created for the online forum-based role-playing medium created by Flux and Urbeth. While online forum-based role-plays are very popular and enjoyable especially on Menewsha, GaiaOnline, and SoliaOnline (etc) they can have unbalanced characters with the inclination to God-Mod or Meta-Game. We encourage characters with unique abilities with a balance of weaknesses. As Game Masters (GMs), we also want players to be awarded for playing their characters well, so our discretion, we will also award additional Edges based on how the players play out their characters.
About Mythic University
SETTING Mythic University is a university for races from all mythos to learn about other cultures and diplomatic training. It is located on the planet Kaarin in the pocket universe, Origa. Both the planet and the universe were created specifically for the university by the Council of Inter-dimensional Peace. The city of Yr is the only city on Karrin and has a very diverse population--most of whom are graduates from Mythic University. The city also has a diplomatic sector for holding important inter-dimensional meetings.
The university strives for academic excellence and offers courses for special abilities to all races. Courses range in topics from Introduction to Telepathy to Advanced Levitation. The unique university setting is ideal for students who are looking to acquire these abilities and those who have had limited exposure to other cultures. For those without local accommodations, Mythic University offers a dormitory that can easily entertain students who wish to live in a single room, those who want to live with a roommate, and those students who wish to practice their special interests in the comfort of their room.
PURPOSE The Mythic University role-play is a role-play created by Flux and Urbeth for those users who wish to play in a university setting with a wide range of races. This role-play reinforces balanced role-playing to make it more enjoyable for everyone. We would ask that you respect each other and the rules, but most of all we want everyone to have fun!

NEWS I was allowed to create an OOC thread for my lists of Edges and Hindrances. I wanted to make it available for our role-play as well as other users to use as well. The thread also includes an explanation of Edges and Hindrances and the point-system. Please, do not post in that thread if you have questions. You are free to post in this thread or send me a PM.
We are also working on a map so that players are not confused. Both Flux and I have run into issues in another role-plays in which the players' understanding of the setting is contradictory. So a map of some sort will be created.
Also, we are putting our characters together with some consideration as we are the GMs and make sure players play fair.

FAQS - What position can a character be?
A character can be either a professor on the faculty or a student.
- How many characters am I allowed to play?
The maximum number of characters you can play is determined by the GMs. In other words, you can play as many characters as you can play without leaving characters behind, inhibiting other characters' development, or acting out-of-character. If you want to play another character, make another character and you will be allowed to play the character on a trial basis to see if you can abide by the above rules, after which a decision will be made if you can keep playing the character.
- What races may I play as?
You can play as any race you can describe within the framework of Edges and Hindrances; racial abilities and disadvantages map directly to Edges and Hindrances respectively. For the sake of the other players and the GMs, a description of your version of the race will be required.
- How can I get more edges without taking more hindrances?
The GMs will award additional edges to active characters based on how the character is being played. Basically, "what you play is what you get." If you play your character so that s/he practices telepathy everyday after class (Telepathy 101), then we will give you a basic edge that you could build upon such as basic mind reading. Eventually, your character can actually have full telepathy abilities if you want. This allows you to also acquire minor edges to suit your character's needs. The only exception to this rule is trying to get an edge that would conflict with a hindrance your character has. An example would be trying to get the edge Regeneration when your character has a hindrance of slow to heal.

RULES We understand rules are tedious to read when you just want to start playing, but they serve to ensure everyone is treated fairly. We tried to keep them short and sweet, but we reserve the right to modify these rules at any time!

MYTHOS: No one knew for many years what happened to the people of Atlantis mentioned by Plato in Timaeus. But once the Galaxies were further explored, the people of Earth had their answer. The Atlantians has left Earth in search of new places to live with their advanced technology. They are a peculiar race--much evolved since their exodus. They have the technology to suppress age, staying young for centuries. Parents can genetically alter their offspring (usually conceived in a laboratory) to have special abilities linked to specific genetic sequences. Mothers are not even required to carry their offspring to full term with artificial womb technology. However, the race in general has varying degrees of light sensitivity due to the decreasing amount of melanin in their skin over their evolution.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Kibeth looks as if she is about 13 years old and stands about 5'4" tall, weighing about 123 lbs (10 lbs of hair). Her hair is a light green due to the chlorophyll in her living hair cells. Her hair is also prehensile. Her skin is nearly white with light blue pigments. Kibeth prefers to wear formal high-neck dresses in a Victorian style usually in shades of black, gray, or blue.

EQUIPMENT: The dresses that she usually wears are made from an unusual fiber has incredible strength against blades, scraps and heat akin to Kevlar. The dresses also have a bodice lined to protect against bullets, thrusting weapons, and projectiles. Occasionally, she may have a shoulder bag with books, papers, and/or notes for class or meetings.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Kibeth as she is now known lived her previous life as a human woman who died tragically in a targeted car accident, named Emma Kastenson. She had no idea that her soul had the ability to be reborn until she "awoke" in an artificial womb. Further investigation as a child mature beyond her years revealed that her previous telepathic abilities, reading and blocking had remained intact, however, her ability to be reborn has the limitations of being reborn at the time of consciousness in the womb to any race that practices conception in any plane.
Eventually, Kibeth met a gentleman who kindly explained that Rebirth is not guaranteed. No wanting to jeopardize her life, she takes care to avoid dangerous situations for fear of dying.
She was sent to Mythic University two years ago after a horrible chemical experiment disfigured her face. Her race being very discriminatory about appearances, sent her to Mythic University to rid her from their presence. It was at the university that she met [Flux's Character] her first semester when she took one of his chemistry courses. He respected her cautious nature and found her ability to be reborn "intriguing and worth replication" and created her protective dresses based on her design.
In her third year, she was appointed to the Teaching Assistant for Biology classes with her expertise from Atlantian genetic studies and gene-therapy treatments.

RACE: Sprites
MYTHOS: Sprite are the inhabitants of the planet Galatea which is in one of the galaxy's outer constellations. The planet is similar to earth in it's make up. It has a unified society which is spread over the entire planet. The planet is unique in its kind in that it hosts a plethora of lifeforms which do not acquire oxygen to live. They are however largely dependent on what the earth bound humanoids call 'Ambrosia' a thick honey like substance that they must consume a set amount of each month. On their planet this substance is an abundance and as it is poisonous to anyone not indigenous to their planet they have had little to fear of possible attacks. Their planet is technologically quite advanced, but unlike other planets their technology is solely used as a means of making life comfortable and improving their health. Sprite have the natural ability to blend in, but their unique race stands out because of three prominent features that can not be blended in as easily. Their hair is white and the even the human invention of hair dye will not hold on it to change this. Their eyes are a strange blend of colors that are seen as similar to when one holds a crystal to light and lastly what mostly stands out is that Sprite children do not have a gender until they turn 23 years in human age. Once they become of age their gender will be determined by their character and physical condition. (IE hormonal settings) Their race has two main powers that their kin inherit genetically. Sprite children are born either Telepathic or Telekinetic.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: As said in the above explanation Kirin has no gender, all white hair very long and crystal eyes. Its clothes are similar to this picture only the bottom is actually a long skirt with a slid up the right side leg.
EDGES: Skilled at telepathy to the point where it can project her thoughts onto one or more people as it is its only means of communication. Learns fast. Kirin is very level headed in stressful situations and it allows it to calm others down when they in that situation would normally be panicking.
HINDRANCES: Kirin is mute due to an accident when it was born; Kirin will not ever be able to speak through vocal means only through telepathy. Kirin is deathly claustrophobic; it will be unable to be in a small and/or locked room for more then a few minutes tops before its fear makes it go into shock.
EQUIPMENT: Senbon needles; thin needles similar to the ones used on earth in ancient China. These needles are covered in a poisonous layer and kept hidden in the special leather straps tied around its arms. The leather straps holding the needles protect Kirin's skin from its own weapons. An ornate dagger strapped around its upper left leg; also hidden. A knotted staff with glyphs on them which it holds and uses defensively. The staff will glow in its hands, but has no magical combat capacities. It merely proves Kirin's title and rank.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: On Galatea, Kirin's home planet, Kirin is known as 'the political sweetheart' for its excellent negotiation skills and ruthless political prowess. Kirin is the youngest ambassador the council has send off planet. Kirin was send to the scholarly constellation to be an a representative of its kin and assess the university as a possible place for the future generation of its kin to study at. The sprite have only recently begun to make contact with other inhabitants of the known galaxy through their vast number of ambassadors and representatives. As a peace loving community the Sprite wish to make alliances with the outside races and to establish good contact with the younger generations they send Kirin to the university to represent the sprite of Galatea and bring their message of good will as well as to assess the school and determine its value for their people. (IE will it be beneficial? Will their children learn things they wouldn't while on Galatea? Will it help establish peaceful coalitions and alliances with other races to serve the greater good of both parties involved)
Kirin agreed to going with its sibling to this school as it interested Kirin a great deal and its scholar side wished to learn as much as it could. Kirin can easily adapt to new situations and act accordingly which make it such a strong politician and allow it easily make many friends without letting anyone come too close. As sprite are very lacking where emotional relationships are concerned Kirin is unable to easily express its true feelings and instead reacts as is expected of it.

EDGES: Telekinesis, very weak. Can't move objects and living things that weigh over 44 lbs AKA 20 kilos.
HINDRANCES: When emotional Orin has no control over its power. It will cause minor trembles to pass through objects within two meters of his person when upset. When angry a vase or cup within two meters of his person might explode. Is unresponsive to anyone, but its sibling. It is deaf and has a small pocket watch it can't go without and it will become upset when it loses said watch causing minor trembles until the item is returned.
EQUIPMENT: none. Only the watch on its chain around its neck.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Orin is Kirin's sibling. Its never seen without Kirin and doesn't respond to anyone other then Kirin for now. Orin is impaired and was sent with its sibling simply so it would be out of the way. Most sprite seem to have little patience for children like Orin.

MYTHOS: A race of cat people. Most are not shapeshifters, unlike werewolves. Most are humanoid, although the degree can differ.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: She has a heart shaped face and slitted gold eyes. Her fur is white with grey patches. She has a long tail and long tufted ears. She has knees that go backwards and her arms are almost the same length as her legs. She also has retractable claws.
EDGES: Good Reflexes - Level 2 (2), Shape-Shifting - Basic Ability (2), Shape-Shifting - Minor Alteration (1), Shape-Shifting No Concentration (1), Instincts (2) (Instinct is basically the gut feeling upon meeting someone, or a "feeling" in the air.)
HINDRANCES: Aquaphobia (2), Fear of dogs and werewolves (2), Hated by dogs (1)
EQUIPMENT: Throwing knives, for when her claws can't be used.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Ignored as a youngest child in a large family, Nebbiana reached out to people of other families and even races. Now she wants to become a diplomat to other races, except werewolves. She had bad run-in with one as a preteen, and it's scared her. Likewise, dogs don't like her because she smells like a cat, so she learned to fear them too. Her best friend is a vampire.
CHARACTER NAME: Naya Anders

GENDER: Female
AGE: 19
RACE: Psychic Human
MYTHOS: In the past, many humans have claimed to be psychic (despite being fake), however actual psychics do exist. Real psychics are simply humans who possesses the gift of extrasensory perception (i.e. perception that comes from something other than the five physical senses). Depending on the person, this ESP can manifest as a variety of abilities ranging from divination to telepathy to empathy. Usually, these powers come to around the age of adolescence and come into their prime when the person reaches adulthood.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: With tanned skin and an average figure, Naya clocks in at a weight of 120 pounds and 5'7". Though not evident, she is somewhat athletic, having been a swimmer through high school as well as a volleyball player. Her hair is colored black and pulled back into a ponytail while her eyes are a dark brown. Usually, she'll be seen wearing a combination of leggings and a shirt with a variety of accessories.
EDGES: Naya has the uncanny ability of empathy which lets her not only feel emotions, but also plant them in others. This ability however, does not make her susceptible to having emotions planted into her as she has learned to block them as well. Another ability of hers is to perceive the auras of others and to see in the point of view of those near her. (Full empathy, 3 points; Aura Perception, 1 point; Remote Viewing Level 1; 1 point)
Due to working with some herbs, Naya has some immunity to certain telepathy-blocking plants for those who telepathic powers are not being emulated (0 points)
HINDRANCES: Weakness to Mandrake and Ivy - Exposure to Mandrake and Ivy will cause a weakening in her telepathic/empathetic powers (2 points)
EQUIPMENT: In the spirit of defense, she carries around pepper spray and a taser hidden in either her pocket or her pack.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Naya wasn't born into the life of a psychic. She was born to two normal parents in Phoenix, Arizona where she schooled along with her older sister for about twelve years of her life. It was there that she started her "career" as a swimmer and also there that she discovered her "gift". A few months after discovery she had to live with her aunt and learn to hone her manifesting abilities. After she became an adult, her aunt applied her to Mythic University in order for Naya to explore the full extent of her abilities.
CHARACTER NAME: Sam Walker
USERNAME: Cows Go Moo
GENDER: Male
AGE: 21
RACE: Human
MYTHOS: None
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Sam Walker is a lanky boy standing at 5'9" and weighing roughly 135 pounds. From a life of indoor activity and a lack of sports, his skin is fair if not slightly pale (though not to an unhealthy extent). His eyes are colored blue while his hair is brown and cut short. Unlike the stereotypical nerd he doesn't wear glasses or any sort of odd clothing and instead dons a pair of jeans with a t-shirt (usually with a random saying or picture). Around his neck hangs his goggles that have night, telescopic, and microscopic vision. Usually he has a heat ray gun at his side in a holster for defensive purposes.
EDGES: Sam's affinity for invention has resulted in a prodigal level of devices that can emulate other worldly abilities; however, he can't emulate all types of abilities with his objects and still has quite a bit to learn. (Weird Science Level 2, 4 points)
HINDRANCES: Limited Weird Science (Physical, Alteration, and Locomotive abilities only; 2)
EQUIPMENT: Around his neck are a pair of goggles that have a telescopic, microscopic, night vision, and infrared function. In his pocket is an X-Acto Knife used for model making, and inside of a holster, he holds a heat ray.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Some children were interested in sports. Some children were interested in playing video games. Well Sam was part of the group of children who was interested in legos. He loved to build things as well as dissemble them (one could only guess the expression on his parents' faces when they found out he had taken apart the VCR player). His affinity for invention and technology only persisted throughout his school years. Though he could have entered MIT or any other IT school, he found himself unchallenged by their curriculum (read: bored by his teachers) and only after much badgering did he decide to sign up for Mythic University.

Esenthe Isle Information:
Shiftport Traveler Transportation Process:- Traveler requests a ticket for themselves. Children accompanied by parents must request their own ticket.
- Transport Control checks if the genetic signature is forbidden. If approved, Transport Control sends a ticket for the individual.
- When the traveler shifts, the ticket is checked against the genetic signature which requested the ticket.
- Travelers appear in a chamber in the proper transport sector.
- Travelers are immediately escorted to their destination (be it storage or docks).
This process is similar to the freight transport process.
Shift Chambers:- All chambers are enabled and have identification codes assigned by Transport Control on a per-trip basis.
- All chambers are monitored and controlled from Transport Control.
- All chambers have secret, hidden defenses.
- All chambers can be set to a specific environment (pressure, aptmosphere composition, etc), including aquatic and vacuum.
- All chambers have ornately-etched ceilings.
- All chambers have the shifting technology concealed in the walls, floor, and ceiling.
- All chambers have scanners built into the walls. These sensors scan genetic and check for obvious and concealed restricted and banned items as well as chemical, biological, and other dangerous and quarantineable agents.
- All chambers have are built to survive sizable explosions.
Traveler-Transport Shift Chambers:- Chambers are approximately 20 ft x 20 ft (7 m x 7 m).
- The monitoring mechanisms are discrete.
- The decor of the chamber matches the transport sector.
- There is an adjoining room with places for sitting when acclimatization is required.
Freight-Transport Shift Chambers:- Decor is plain concrete walls.
- The monitoring is mostly obvious with some discrete mechanisms.
- Chambers are of varying size to suit varying volumes of freight.
The Docks:
Each of the docks is contained in center of a secured area. These are one-story covered concrete structures containing a series of sequential waiting areas. Entrance to a waiting area requires a ticket which is scanned upon entry. The entrances/exits of the waiting areas are large bay-like doors with wide grooves cut into the edges which conceal blast doors. Scanners are concealed in the exits and the entire area is under discrete monitoring. The ceiling contains ornate etching which conceal defenses. Inside the waiting area is a large sitting area; there are no shops as the area is intended to hold people only long enough for a ferry to take them to the mainland. Ferries are scheduled to run as often as necessary and very rarely is the wait for a ferry more than 30 min. The decor of the waiting areas warm and nondescript.
Transport Control:
Transport Control houses the machines controlling transport activities and their overseers. Travelers are not allowed into Transport Control without a valid reason and approval.
Secured Areas:
The secured areas house the Docks, traveler quarantine, and the military presence on Esenthe Isle. Naval command and research is headquartered deep underground.
Storage Areas:
The storage areas for manufacturing and commercial freight awaiting ferry transport to the mainland as well as any freight quarantined. These areas are perpetually under overt and discrete surveillance. Scanners are concealed in the walls. Defenses are concealed in the walls and ceiling. The floors contain anti-gravity field emitters.
Escort Around Esenthe Isle:
Travelers are escorted in levitating carts pulled by a single levitating locomotive. Freight is transported in a similar fashion but with larger carts (up to small barge sizes).
Concealed Defenses:
Defenses on Esenthe Isle have been placed to provide defense from incoming travelers and cargo as well as from external attack. These defenses can be either conventional (or varying technology levels) or exotic (either Magic or Weird Science).

Ooh, this sounds really interesting! I'll need to think a bit on what I want my character to be, but I wanted to let you guys know I'm interested. I'll PM you as soon as I can think of an intersting enough character! (And I like the hindrance/edge system. Sounds reallly good for preventing godmoding)

This RPG has been conceived with lessons learned from table-top. Text-based RPGs often lack the controls found in table-top RPGs, so we thought we would introduce some of the controls and hope it would not put too many potential players off.

@Flux I actually didn't do a thesis, I passed a qualifying exam instead, but I was focused more on theory then practice.

Do you know what your PhD thesis will be on then? I ask because before you showed up I was to be the primary for the mathematics because I have a math minor and a B.S. in a math-heavy field and am interested in some of the theoretical fields.

Put a character together and get it to us. We should the bulk of the abilities finalized in a few days (although having abilities outside of that set is wholly acceptable, we just did not think of them).

Not really, If I had my choice it would probably be set theory or logic, but it sort of depends on what school I get into, and who my advisor is. Right now I'm working on deciding where I'd like to go, and getting up my nerve to apply.

Just an Update on the thread: - Courses have been added - Let us know of additional courses you would like to see!
- We have added some sample Edges and Hindrances for you to start looking at. We are still working out all the points, but it will give you an idea of how it works!
- Do you have any ideas for some professors as NPCs? Tell us! If you like making character profiles -- make a few professor ones!
