Aquarium Part one: A cage of glass
BY: Silverbeam

Where mythical creatures are not just myths but races near extinction. A merboy is captured and kept as a prize by a fanatic mythology collector. A man of power, wealth and almost a monarch in his own kind, the merboy Gale stands little chance of his freedom. The man's fanaticism turns crazed as the man turns to Gale with a physical desire. (rated pg-13 for more mature themes, but don't worry, no explicit details. )

"What’s with that hair huh? Like to be flashy? Think you’re cool? Well I think its offensive. A little chlorine water will fix this right up." The leader of the gang grabbed his hair tightly and pulled him toward the pool. The thug that was holding him assisted in dragging Gale over to the pool edge.

The girl tugged and shouted at their captors, "Stop it! What are you doing to him!? Leave us alone, Please!" she glanced at the boy and winced when he gasped at the rough handling he was given. Indeed his hair was crazy. It was a craqy blend of pinks purples and yellow. The melded like a tropical sunset along his long locks. His hair was messy but fell in long tendrils to brush againt his shoulders. Other had tried to dye it, but it was natural and color just didn't hold on, it was gone with the first wash. His eyes were a little less offensive, they were a brilliant purple, , a purple that matched his hair. Gale had told her that he was often teased and bullied because of his looks, but that their bullying just encouraged a stubborn streak in that he always cared about his looks. Now it seems that he came across more than his stubbornness could handle.

The girl wished fervently that he had never taken her out here. Then she promptly tried to wash the thought out of her mind. The boy had been the only one kind to her in her new circumstance. The sudden death of her family had left her alone, shoved into an orphanage. Her inexperience of being alone had led the bullies to instantly peck at her, like a flock of chickens pecking at a weaker one's wound. This boy, Gale, had jumped in and out mouthed them, leading her away from their hurtful words. He in place had tried to cheer her up by bringing her here. They snuck out of the large home and he led her to this place. A rundown Aquarium park. Gale had said this was his palace of solitude. It was closed for business but still had the pools filled and the fish tanks cared for. Of course the bigger animals were gone, but Gale would just looked at the water and sigh. That's when everything went wrong. They had heard a noise, and went to check it out. Over at the bigger open pool were several men. Bags of some unknown contents were being exchanged for a pretty large suitcase. That's when Gale suggested they get out of there. Unfortunately, to get out they had to run past unseen. They weren't lucky and they were spotted. The thugs looked stupid but were pretty good with their job. It hadn't taken them long to spot and catch the accidental viewers. They were hauled over to the leader who was in charge of the exchange. He was a pretty cocky guy who seemed to love lording it over everyone else. There were some tough bullies in the group home, but this guy was used to more real power. He immediately started picking on Gale, and now all seemed hopeless against them.

He struggled widely against his captors, but it was like budging two light poles. They were solid in place, there large stature and muscles leaving no room for argument. Gale was slammed onto his belly, his shoulders hanging over the side of the pool. The leader yanked up his head by his hair. Gale yelped in pain and tears came to his eyes. He looked into the depths of the pool the water lapping lightly against the side. Water had always been his nemesis, his fear, his nightmare. He had always done his best to avoid anything larger than a bathtub, and even then he was dubious. He had a strange feeling around the water, and he dared let no one find out his strange secret. It wasn't that he disliked the water. Quite the opposite. He supposed it was like those who were afraid of heights. Not because it was so high, but that they got the strong desire to jump off. The same applied to Gale. This overwhelming feeling of diving deep down into the water, never to resurface. There was only one time where he gave into that. Since then he had fought hard to never give into that feeling.

So now as he faced the brink he begged, not so much in fear of his life, but the fear of his secret being reveled.
"No please don't! Anything but this, not the water, just not this!" The leader laughed cruelly.
"What’s that? Afraid of a little soak? Don’t worry were just going to wash that color out of your hair. I think about five minutes under ought to do it."

The others joined in at laughing at Gales tear strained face, as his feared overwhelmed him in panic. He fought as hard as he could, but they easily held him down. The leader drew the boys head up slightly, before slamming his head down underneath the waters surface. Gale barely had time to pull in some air as his head was completely submersed. He fought to hold his breath while continuing his struggle. The goon put more of his weight atop him, and the leader was using both hands to strain his head under. He felt his lungs begin to crave more air. He had to let out some of it out as the pressure began upon his lungs. Bubbles floated up as he exhaled some of his precious time. Most of his air was gone and he could feel the strain in his head as his brain demanded more oxygen. How long could he last? He heard muffled screams from the girl. He had a small moment of regret for her, until his attention was forced back upon his predicament. He could no longer withstand what was to come. He had run out of air. At last his body betrayed him and in took the water, as he gasped for air, that was not to be found. He shut his eyes he knew what was to come. Not the stillness of death, but the deepest fears come to face him. He coughed, inhaled and spasm as the water invaded his body.

Tingling covered him as fierce as a lightning strike, he shook as he felt the change surround him. His legs snapped together as a line of pain shot along his spine down to his feet. He screamed, bubbles flying to the surface. He could still feel the men restraining him, barely being able to hold on. Cloth teared and ripped as his skin began to change rapidly, changing the shape his limbs fit in the clothing. His skin flexed and molded over his legs. His hands grew as his fingers became longer and became more webbed. A ripple grew from his back in a wave that extended from his neck down to the lump of his ankles. His ears grew to a contorted fin shape and his skin along his now merged legs became hard. Scales grew and shimmered in bright colors along his lower body. Even in the dim moonlight the yellow and coral colors shone along the scaled fish tail and fins. It was the same color that matched his hair and eyes. His clothing lay tattered around him as they were ripped in the fierce growth and change of his body.

Finally the pain receded as the change finished it transformation. He lay limp, too exhausted to move a muscle, his head comfortable now in the water breathing normally as if he was in the air. All stood in shock and confused horror. They gazed uncomprehending upon the event in front of them. The goons looked panicky in their confusion; surely they had no training for events like this. A UFO landing would have been easier to deal with then whatever had just happened. One of the men kicked the fish tail softly; too afraid to really touch it, but not sure if it was real or not. Gale flopped a little in reaction to the kick, not really having the energy to do more. They all jumped back in alarm. This thing was real, whatever just happened. The girl fainted, this last event being too much on top of an already heightening situation. The goon let her fall to the ground and came over for a look at the strange creature lying before them.

"Boss what is this? It's like something out of a fairytale or story."

"What like a mermaid or something? I thought those things weren’t real. And besides they are supposed to be girls aren’t they?" The goon looked curiously around the figure to see if breasts had also been included in the strange transformation.

"A fairytale, yes it seems so..." The leader’s eyes lit up as he gazed at the boys figure. Glee and greed entered his visage as he planned in his head.

"Should I shoot it?"

"No imbecile! This creature is much too valuable, More valuable than either of you, got it?!" The last was said as a snarl toward the two large figures. They nodded enthusiastically to their leader’s control.

"What about this one?" asked the goon next to the girl as he eyed her.

"Throw her in, either she’s the same, or it doesn't matter." the man reached into his pocket and began punching numbers into his cell phone. He talked hurriedly as the two goons reached over and threw the girl into the pool unconscious. Gale heard none of this conversation as everything became muddle in his exhaustion; he felt his energy drain and the last thing his senses picked up was a splash in the pool. After that he swirled into the darkness of the fearful unknown.

Part 2

Sir?” A man walked into the room, his head down in acknowledgment. He was universally bland but certain things could be picked up. A servant, and a fine mans servant at that. He was strong and well built. His manner and gesture was every bit subservient as he walked before the desk. He wore an expensive gray suit, not as to be flashy, but shown of higher financial status. He stopped several feet before the large desk. It was expansive in a deep cherry wood. It was intricately carved along the sides and among the trim. Ivy leaves scrolled along with dense trees. A large flat screen stood on top along with a touch screen pad flat atop the desk built in. It was beyond the common found technology, the newest of technology, not yet released.

The man looked up from his monitor. Fine features gazed out among the slender frame. Angular chin and deep lashed eyes with pools of blue. Golden hair cascaded artistically across his toned shoulders. His skin was fair, pale and fine as a porcelain doll. The figure was tall, and the only oddity to his beauty was the long tipped ears that pointed back. From surgery or an odd birth defect was unknown to his servants, but this frail graceful creature was anything but his appearance underneath. A cold power was held like the finest of steel blades. This was the crime Lord that had managed to build an empire underground society and its laws. So it was no little wonder that the man came before him with a heart beating just a little fast behind his tailored suit.

The elegant man looked out from his desk and paused in his work.
“Proceed.” He gave the man permission to speak more of whatever errand had dared him to come before him. But this one had lasted for a while now, so he trusted him that it was important enough to inform him when he was busy.
The man bowed his head in respect before continuing. “Sir one of your men has come to present a gift to you sir. He implores that it be given to you right away.”
An eyebrow rose at the impertinence of one of his men. It must be a lower ranking servant. None of his more esteemed workers would dare such impertinence. Still it must be something if it was allowed through to reach him. “And you checked it over thoroughly?” the servant nodded humbly.

“And do you deem it as such as this man has said?”

Again the man nodded and spoke. “Sir I deem it of an exceptional value.” He was indeed intrigued. The boldness of his men on this matter was interesting indeed. They knew and heard of the consequences if such things were not dealt before him with certainty and respect. More than their life would be given if he was not pleased in the matter.

“Very well, admit him, with his…gift.”

Gale awoke feeling sore and achy. His head seemed muddled and the light was low. He was sitting upright against something cold. He attempted to turn and was butted by a glass pane. He blinked a few times and was able to make out more clearly his surroundings. Glass walls surrounded him tightly. A track light came from around the base, giving a soft glow that flickered in the water. . He had been crammed into a common fish tank. A large one, and yet not fit for human size occupation. Although it was glass, he could not see outside it. A blanket or some sort of material covered the tank He could only lay sitting with his tail stretched out in front his head close to brushing the ceiling. He reached up to push at the ceiling wall. The black surface remained unmoving no matter how hard he pushed. It felt like there was a lock or perhaps a lever keeping it closed. Of course a new addition. He didn’t think people needed to lock their fish IN before. He sighed and sank himself, slumping against the sides in a depressed stupor.
“What now?” he thought in despair. His secret was out, and not only that, but to some very shady characters. Was he going to be dissected? A freak show? A pet? Made into their private fish man henchman…. Horrible scenes flashed through his mind, each one more vivid than the last. A horrible lurch threw him around as the water sloshed from side to side. He had to press his hands tightly to the sides in order to prevent him from being thrown about. The motion calmed down. He could hear light voices muffled through the glass and water to be indiscernible to him. It felt like he was moving. Probably on wheels or something. He thought he made a few turns, as things shifted him from one side to another. They traveled for what felt like forever, but were probably only a few minutes. At last they came to a stop. More muffled voices reached him, and yet one seemed to come in more clearly. Still not clear enough to make out the words, but this voice was different than the rest. It had a commanding presence to it. It was male, and had a smooth and refined quality. Like when the higher snobby lawyers came to the orphanage on business. The voices stopped and Gale tensed feeling that his wait was over. The cloth was torn away from the glass in s respective flourish. Like a magician performing a grand illusion. But this was no illusion, for Gale was real, not some fake tabloid. If he wasn’t he wouldn’t be so worried about what he was about to face ahead of him.

Gale peered out past the refraction of glass and water. The room was highly decorated. It gave the feeling of a throne room. Lush drapes, deep carpets, and giant ferns filled the room. Filigree and gold leafing plastered the room. Somehow it still came out refined instead of garish. Guards, or henchmen, stood near doors and windows. All the highest security for the one whose attention seemed to suck you in upon. The master of this place. He was tall and lithe, a most gracious figure. His hair was long and the purest of blonds, it fell like silk upon his back. A curious note was that his face was masked. Like a high end masquerade, feathers and jewels added a demure of mystery and enchantment. His lips and chin were visible as were his eyes. His blue eyes matched his elegance in their perfect shade. Now they were lit with wonder as he leaned forward from his grandiose chair. He stood up and walked slowly forward toward him. His steps were graceful and yet predatory like a hunting cat.
Gale backed up in his tank, with what little room he could, wishing he had feet instead of a few inches.
He shivered in fear. This man was powerful. The golden figure spoke and gestured to one of the beefy guys hanging about. Gale couldn't make out the words but he didn't like the idea of it. The said beefy man stepped up to the tank, his head easily above the top ledge. He thought he heard a click and sounds coming from the top of the aquarium.
“Oh @$#*&!” Thought Gale as the lid was removed from above him. Once again Gale wished for more room as he flattened as best he could to the bottom. Her didn't remember much of his transformation, but he did remember the searing pain. Water sloshed out as the hand dove in and reached for the unwilling fish boy. At least Gale gave him a fight before the man finally got a good grip and with his other arm yanked him out of the water. Gale spat water ran, and dripped all over as gale coughed and spluttered, very much the fish out of water. This time the change was a bit faster as he thrashed withing the large arms of the security goon. “Well at least I got his nice suit drenched.” Gale took the small comfort, little it did him in his situation. Finally his breathing slowed and came more normal as his tail split and shifted into legs. His bare skin became goose bumped as he shivered from being wet and uncovered. Some heat came in a highly embarrassed flush as that man approached him, staring ever intently upon him.
“Marvelous, it is indeed a fitting gift.” The first words Gale could make out of the princely figure. They were haughty and commanding. He was almost convinced that he would address himself in plural like royalty.
With a small wave and downward look, the man addressed those that had brought him in. His previous tormentors, stood full of themselves.
“You shall have my thanks.” with that they were quickly ushered out leaving less between him and this mighty figure. The figure stood staring at him measuring and examine Gale from every perspective.
Gale just wanted to melt into the puddle on the floor. “Ahhh, just go away! Or at least give me a robe you perv!”
The man stepped back toward his impromptu dais, and sat gracefully. “Have him washed and dressed.” With that simple order, Gale was finally ushered out from the presence of this exotic man. Gale was too dizzy and weak himself, and had to be carried away like a child, or expensive doll. Gale shook slightly in fear, he may no longer be in the room with that man, but he still felt his gaze upon him.

He was swiftly carried through the grand hallways of the place. He was easily lost within it's many corridors and rooms. The place seemed so big to gale. The ceilings where so high he felt the walls would fall in on them. He had no idea how the servants could find their way about. They walked on until they came to a wide double doored entrance. Two maids stood at attention on either side. They open the doors gracelessly as for them and followed them in. Gale didn't know a bathroom could look this grand. More like some grand Grecian temple then a place where one got rid of personal waste.
A Large circular tub was built into the floor, already half full. Besides the two maids that entered with them, there were already several others. One grabbing towels, another a tray of bottles filled with syrupy liquids of all colors. The last had brushes and other beauty paraphernalia.
Gale blushed and tried to hide in the goons large arms. The maids seem not to personally notice him, but he still was exposed in front of several girls. Gale was set inside the tub gently among the towel lined seat of the tub. The women were very brisk and business like. They washed him, cleaned and even trimmed the tips of his hair. Gale had little energy to fight off all the brushes and washcloths. By the time they got him dried, he was at least able to stand with an arm to help balance him. They gave him what was like a long tank top that zipped up the sides. The material went to his mid thighs, and was bordered by sea waves in blue and white. The tunic itself was a deep sea green. Gale wondered how they had something fitting his nature for him to wear. Did they keep this sort of clothing on hand? It was kinda unnerving.
Another finely dressed thug helped him walk through the halls. He still had no idea of orientation with this place. It had many twists and turns, like a maze that never ended. Gale started to loose what little strength he had in this walk and feared that he would have to be carried again. HE shook his thoughts at that. He really didn't want to be carried like that again. He mustered the strength to continue walking, the thug not noticing any lapse in his strength. Finally he assumed they were there when the guards became much more populated within the hall and a very big door lay before them. Guards, in place of maids opened the door this time. A banquet lay across a long decorated table. Only two chairs sat at the table. They sat across each other at the center of the table.
“welcome to my table. I am glad that you are here to share a meal with myself.” That magnificent figure was already seated in the larger of the two chairs. His mask and clothing had changed. It appeared to be be more casual and yet, more refined. Gale wondered if he was showing off on purpose or if this was how he always was. He was led to his seat and the thug even took out the napkin and with a shake, placed it expertly onto his lap. He nodded to his host and left the room. He was alone with this man now, unless you counted the whole crabs at the center plate. Gale looked at the table settings.
“SO much food!” Gale recalled all the times he and the others at the orphanage had gone hungry on small rations. The head of the home deemed food was unnecessary to youngsters if they were at all 'uppity'.
“Please eat, I was unsure of your preferences so Had a few extra dishes made to accommodate.” He pointed at the table and rolled his fingers out at the display encouraging him to the food set before him.
At first Gale was tentative and lost with all the forks and plates he had, but soon he just began to dive in, trying whatever looked good. He couldn't bring himself to eat the seafood, it just seemed odd in his situation, and he didn't want to think about it. Especially with those eyes gazing at him constantly. The man did not take one bite but continued to stare at him, almost without blinking, a little smile at his lips. When Gale had slowed down upon his feast, The man turned to address him. Surely now he would find his fate, and he shivered despite himself....

Thanks! So much!

Part 5 (section A)

“Surely you are very lucky to have come into my graces. I can't help but think what they would do to you in a lab.” The man acted nonchalant while twirling a strand of his hair. The golden strand twinkled as the light reflected off while it slid along his long fingers. Gale leaned back and noticed that his hair was so long that he could see the ends under the short tablecloth. He was a very beautiful man, he thought, even with his mask hiding half his head. His delicate and pale skin, lean frame, with just the right hint of muscle. Everything about him was exquisite to look upon. Like a beautifully wrapped gift box adorned with the perfect bow and ribbon to it's already neatly papered shine. But what was inside didn't always match what was seen on the outside. Some gifts, were better left unreceived.
His words chilled Gale as he shivered in fear from the thought of being in some laboratory. He remembered fears just of that thought when he first discovered his abnormality. The man oozed self assurance towards him, but he didn't feel lucky to be here either.
“You will be a guest in my home. A place were none will come to harm you. I as your host, will promise you that I will see to your comfort personally here in my abode. So no worry need befall you. You may rest assured here.” He turned and smiled haughtily at the boy, and Gale looked away nervously. Meanwhile the plates were being whisked away by servants and the dinner was coming to a close. Silence gave pause to the room as the man watched Gale almost unblinking. He didn't start to speak again until the last of the servants had left the room.
“I should tell you a bit about myself, as I'm sure your curious, as I am curious about you. So I shall go first, in the introductions. As you can tell I am a man of means. I have acquired much wealth and influence among the more humble of countries. I have several trades and businesses throughout the world, and I plan to continue to spread my influence worldwide. Some of my work can be, Hmmm, rough at times, but it is necessary in my field. Many of the places I do business in, have a feudal position, So I am considered much as a Lord, or as such a higher nobility position. They call me Lord Kaylith Trance. You however, may call me Kaylith, I would like to consider each other on a more friendlier basis.” Kaylith, the pronounced Lord, put his fingertips together, easing back into his chair. He let his words digest into Gale's mind, seeing if he could read between the lines of what he had told the boy.

part 5 (section b)

Gale tried to keep a blank face. He didn't know how and where he stood with this man. His explanation was so vague, it stirred up more questions about him, then told him who he was. “A Lord? Surely he must be joking. Wasn't more like he played king of the hill, since he was so rich. And whats with the nature of his work? Sounds more like a Mafia or Tyrant. Just who did I get involved with here?” Gale inwardly grimaced. This was not turning out real well. Sure, he may not be being dissected, but now he was with this crazy king wannabe who committed crime for wealth and power.
“And now If you would tell me a bit more about yourself. I know my associates brought you here, but little besides from that. Wont you grace me with a name?” Kaylith smiled sweetly, a purr almost to his voice as he asked eagerly about the young man. Gale was finally going to have to speak to out loud. He hadn't even been aware that he had been avoiding speaking. Something that would have been an act of acknowledging the crazy situation he was in. He had wanted to stay as uninvolved as possible. Something he had picked up like a bad habit in his life. It was often a necessity at the orphanage to be able to fade out of the scenery.
“Uh, I, My name...It's Gale. Gale Searay.” He gulped nervously as expectant eyes bored into his skull waiting for more to come from his lips. He sighed softly. The man would probably not settle for anything else but his life story.
“I was raised in Adolescent's Hold, Orphanage in Wickliffe, Florida. I don't know anything about my parents, or of my family. Uhm....I'm sixteen years old....?” Gale didn't know what to say. And he was reluctant to say anything at all. Kaylith opened his mouth to ask a question only to be interrupted by a knock at the halls main doorway.
A man dressed in a finely tailored business suite bowed himself in, coming only three steps into the room. As he stood straight he spoke in a deep fluid voice.
“Pardon me, Lord Kaylith, but there is some matters that need your attention.”
It was the first time Gale had seen through the perfect layer of the Lord's appearance. He frowned and looked like a smoldering fuse. Just the beginnings, but of danger that could blow if let continue. A thin folder was handed to him and his eyes rushed over the contents. The fury like a thunder cloud ready to strike began to roll back. He sighed loudly and turn to Gale.
“I'm afraid I must leave you my young one. Some business that needs my hand bids me to go and tend to it. I will be as brief as I can. Meanwhile please rest and relax here.” The ever assured smile was lifted once again as he took one last long look at the boy and then turned away. The man left with light but hurried steps, eager to accomplish the task at hand. Gale let out an exhausted breath and sank into his chair. It looks like he had gained a small space of reprieve from the esteemed Lord.
