I recently finished watching the "original" anime series and loved it. I was a little surprised by the ending and the movie that followed, but I enjoyed every bit of it anyway.
Then, I started reading the manga and I'm patiently awaiting the final two volumes to be released in North America.
I knew the anime and manga were different from one another, but WOW!!!!! they are very different. Both are incredibly brilliantly written.
Without any spoilers, I was just curious about other people's opinions on which is better, or which you prefer.

IKR???? 8D
I feel that both have their own special charm, and it's exciting how different some of the characters are.
I can't really say I like one more than the other since one is anime and the other is manga (I haven't bothered watching the new brotherhood). To me it's hard to compare two different stories when one is in animation and the other book.
But I feel I will probably like the ending to Arakawa's story much better<3

I love the manga/Brotherhood way more. It gives more depth to each of the characters and it's hard to dislike any characters in that series. The first season they put on Adult Swim was an interesting concept- but when I finally finished Brotherhood/manga, I felt like the first season was just a well-written fanfiction.

I really HATED the first anime. I'm a DIEHARD fan for the manga, and was completely ecstatic when I heard of brotherhood being made. So personally I prefer the manga/brotherhood story line.

Awwww yeah. *brofist* I loved FullMetal Alchemist. Still do!
Infact I am currently in a bit of a Greed high. He happens to be most favorite. Him and Havoc.
The original anime was cute, but I really adore the manga. Maybe cause I got to watch it unfold? Maybe because of Ling Yao? I just love it though.

I've actually only read like the first four volumes or so of the manga, but I've seen all the episodes of the original series and the movie, as well as played the PS2 game FullMetal Alchemist and the Broken Angel (not sure if that counts, lol, but it was amazing!).
I dunno, I tried watching Brotherhood but everything is all different, like the voices and the timeline, so I get kind of confused because I'm so used the way it was in the first series. Naturally, that's what I prefer, but I aknowledge the fact that I'm completely biased about that. I think if I saw Brotherhood first or read the mangas, I'd prefer them instead~ ;P

I think that the original FMA anime is probably the best "not quite the same as the manga" series I've ever watched. I've read a good portion of the manga, and only seen bits of Brotherhood, but I still think they did a pretty damn good job finishing the original show off without knowing the true ending. ^^ Also, the movie is amazing. Alchemy + gypsies + world war = win. xD

Haha, yes, I agree the movie was amazing. Anime Hitler... enough said, man. The ending was sad though :/ or at least I found it to be. But for a show that almost completely veered away from the manga, I think it did extremely well <3

I didn't care for the movie. I thought it silly. =/ I did get some kind of enjoyment watching Envy turn into an enormous green serpent/dragon-thing.

Personally, I adore both. They're two separate stories, but I love them equally. ^^ The movie's end surprised me a bit as well. It just left me with the whole "o.O lolwut?" feeling. The original manga and anime series always got me laughing at one point. XD I remember that I loved the show so much that I'd stay up until 2:30-2:00 in the morning just to watch a thirty-minute episode of the original anime.

Personally I LOVE the original anime. I can't get into Brotherhood & I haven't read the manga but I just love how goofy Ed & Al are & the movie was awesome. One of my favorite characters from the original anime was Scar. At first you just think he's a pyscho but then you realize WHY he's doing what he's doing & over the course of the series he does grow as a character. When I saw the episode where he died I actually cried. I cried when Hughes died too. Its an amazing series very well done.

I have actually just really started watching this. I have caught bits and pieces of it before on Adult swim, but never seen the entire thing. So I am trying to do so now. I am only on episode 13 or 14 right now, but I am really enjoying it so far. I was always lost when I caught the bits and pieces and it would truly annoy me to no end. Glad to have found a place where I can watch it online without downloading it, because I can't use my own computer right now.
I am really looking forward to the rest of this series and the I plan to read the manga. It's kind of easy to find it at my local library, so I am going to save money and read it as much as possible through there. I enjoy the plot and the character development is pretty awesome in it.
I highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it. ^_^

I actually perfered the original anime to the manga, but that's probably just because I watcehd it first. The manga was AMAZING mind you, but sometimes there were long rants that I skipped enitirly because they bored me XD I didn't really care for the movie, the storyline bothered me somewhat and the ending depressed me.
My favourite characters are Ed and Envy, but mostly Ed :D
Unlike most fangirls, Roy Mustang bothers me. He has his funny moments, but he's an overall boring character to me (Please don't shoot me!)
FMA manga's ending is amazing. Why haven't you just read it online? Given, it's hard on the eyes, and hard to find in general, but I'd DIE of curiosty if I didn't know XD It's on onemanga.com if you haven't already read it (no clue how old this thread is)
