Inso- It's not that I think it's not a good amount, it's more I feel like a wimp for changing my goal instead of seeing it though to the bitter end, even if I do end up falling short of it! But I think it'll make the challenge more enjoyable if I scale down to something that's a little more doable for me.
Alright, thanks! Now I know to be ready to skim over some parts of the explanations.
Have any plans for what to read in this next twelve months stretch, or are you more the 'read what I find interesting when I want to' type?

There's actually a lot of scholarly argument that Rand stole ideas straight from Zamyatin and only managed to get published because of her fame.
Pick it up if you ever stumble across a copy. I have the feeling that you would like it even more.

I never heard of that! Though I remember reading that she supposedly stole a ton of people's ideas...
Hm. :ninja: I'll definitely be looking into finding that book, because if I managed to enjoy Anthem then I'll probably like this even more. :P
(Because, well... Anthem was pretty underdeveloped...)
Now that I think about it, this does sound familiar - the whole Zamvatin thing. I can't remember, because I wrote that paper about three months ago and I focused primarily on how the die-hard conservative businessmen basically EXPECT any "respectable businessman" to have read Atlas Shrugged and to agree with Rand's objectivism... Which I just find silly. But I ended the paper saying I enjoyed both works regardless of the political undertones, since I hadn't finished reading Atlas Shrugged and felt like it was at least an appropriate read for any political party, blah blah blah. Generalizing for a paper I had very little time to do for a book I was trying to read simultaneously = the easy way to snatch an A.

Oops, I missed this post before!
Bradbury is one of my favorite authors, so I've probably talked about him in here pretty often. His short stories are amazingly well crafted. The Martian Chronicles is good, and so are The Golden Apples of the Sun and I Sing the Body Electric. If you really want to get a feel for what his style is like, just pick up one of his books in the bookstore and quickly read a short story while standing there. It'll be worth it.

I actually had to write a comparative analysis of two works by the same author for a class this year, and I chose Rand's Atlas Shrugged and Anthem.
I never got to finish Atlas Shrugged, though I read the first ~400 pages and I genuinely enjoyed what I read. Though the research I compiled regarding her and the ultra conservative following she attracted peeved me a bit. Definitely a sketchy lady, with a slew of misplaced morals...
But yeah, Anthem is a quick read and very similar to Atlas. I one day plan on picking Atlas Shrugged back up and reading it the whole way through, because I enjoyed what I read regardless of the undertones within the work that I personally disagree with entirely. :ninja:

Hah boy there's a lot of stuff about this lady I don't know about! :P

I was planing on reading Anthem after I finished with Atlas Shrugged but I think I'll pick up Zamyatin's book first and then read Anthem after that!
Iltu - 75 down to 50?! You can't do that!!! :o lol :XD Ok I'm just kidding! I'm not sure if I'm even gonna be able to pull off my 50 books I'm supposed to read let alone 75 >.<!

I know I've got an unread book by him sitting on my bookshelf, and I cannot for the life of my remember what it is! I'll have to check when I get back to my mom's this evening.
Car- I don't even know if I'll be able to pull off 50 either! :gonk:
we'll just have to encourage one another! How far along are you on your challenge?

Rand was a bit of a weirdo.
While married, she began an affair with a twenty-something-year-old married man (when she was about 45-50)... Of course, they didn't start the affair until after they'd both confronted their spouses and asked for consent. A bit unconventional, but I guess.
Of course, she'd also been raised in Soviet Russia, so a lot of her kookiness pretty much stems from her hatred of collectivist frames of mind - socialism, communism, etc.; she was a weird bird, though, because she more than once contradicted a lot of her advocacy for the "individual".

Inso- Looks like a lot of business-type nonfiction there! Best of luck to you.
Car- JUST QUIT YOUR JOB, ABANDON YOUR SOCIAL LIFE, CUT YOUR INTERNET ACCESS AND READ :gonk:
We'll do all that together, until we're caught up!
Knerd- Love all the houses, but I do believe I'm a Ravenclaw gal at heart, myself! (In reality I'd probably be in Hufflepuff, but uh, no need to let that get in the way of things!)
Mehimaru- You ought to try again! :D

I think I might. I mean I still have two months before classes start back. I am pretty sure I can get tons read by then. And then just read like I normally do during class. I bet I could get through 50 books in a year. Maybe more.

Stopping by to add these two lovely novels to my list! I bought them today at the recommendation of a random Aussie guy I met on Twitter last night... We had a fun chat.
Perdido Street Station and The Scar by China Miéville. I've heard his work described as 'New Weird' fiction (whereas H.P. Lovecraft would be 'old' Weird in comparison), as well as in the ever-elusive and obscure genre of speculative fiction. :ninja: Yeah. Yay for being vague!

No, but boy would that be great!
I'm just a bit of a literature elitist. I like to read, and I like to read quality books. That means that I educate myself on what a lot of authors are doing, how their stuff is reviewed, what works influenced what other works, blah blah blah. I like the history behind books just as much as the writing itself.
