If it weren't for college, then I'd try 75 or 100 books in one year, but...I'm not going to risk it. Barely made the deadline for this one!
ANd I've finally sorted out the layout of my Sheryl Holmes books.

Today was so beautiful, in a getting good deals sort of way. :) I went to Half Price Books and got The Two Towers and Return of the King extended editions on DVD, The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (which for some reason was divided into two books? I don't know, I got it from the kid/young adult clearance section, so I guess they divided it into two books for that market?), The Time of the Ghost by Diana Wynne Jones, and A Game of Thrones for about $37. :boogie: I wanted Wired by Robin Wasserman and The Hobbit on audiobook as well but I didn't have the money and I was so sad!
Congrats, Taiyo! :D You're still going to hang out in here and chitter chatter about books with us even though you're starting you next challenge next year, right?
Car- That's how I'm starting to feel. :gonk: Still, I wish you luck!

The Eye of the World divided into to books? Whaa? o.O? I've never seen that before! Did it include First Spring or whatever that prequel that he wrote was called? Oh! Gotcha! Yeah that would make it a lot less intimidating for kids that's for sure  Oh A Game of Thrones! I still haven't finished reading that >.<! Boy sounds like you got a good deal!
*feels left in the dust by Taiyo*
Thanks! you too! I've been into Mangas a lot lately so I ended up finishing Psyren the other day and all 75 Chapters of VinlandSaga too. I'm working on Spice and Wolf right now. I'm also considering re-reading the whole Magical Land Of Xanth series by Peirs Anthony over again this summer cause they are my favorite summer time reading books

Ah, manga. Gotta love it. Personally, I've gotten into Tegami Bachi, by Hiroyuki Asada. I'd suggest it if you want one that has a great story to it.
Though at the moment I'm reading the first in a volume of two books of Sherlock Holmes stories my mom got me before I came home for the summer. I'm right now reading "The Red-Headed League".

I dropped off the face of the planet and I'm a month behind in my goal! Eeeeps!
Stopping in to say hello. Goodness. I have to get a second job, too. When will I read?
Meanwhile, I'm signed up for my library's summer reading program. If you read 5 books, you enter into a raffle. Yep. Anyone else have a library which does this sort of thing?

My hometown library had a little reward card where if you borrowed 20 or so books in a month and filled the card with stickers you got a free book bag. I don't know if they still have any schemes like that. Raffle sounds fun- good luck!
Staff in current library seem annoyed people keep coming in to take away the books they've so lovingly scattered randomly across the shelves. They certainly wouldn't want to encourage it. XD
Yay for Sherlock Holmes too.

This summer, I think that I'm going to put a little effort into reading more classic novels. You can download so many of them for free online that I really have excuse. I'll just put them on my laptop and be ready to go.
Any of you guys have a favorite classic to recommend? I've read most Jane Austen, Poe, Mark Twain, Dostoevsky, and Camus.

Knerd- I've not read a whole lot of classics. I meant to rectify that this summer, but so far, that's going poorly! My favorite classics are mostly the basics I've read for school, like Frankenstein, Shakespeare's plays, The Sound and the Fury, and Antigone, which you've probably already got under your belt. Since you mentioned having read most of Twain's stuff, I do really love A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Twain, but I'm going to wager you've read that as well! If you happen to want some classic nonfiction, The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli is a favorite of mine as well.

The classics are a massive gap for me. I get about as far back as authors like Waugh, Isherwood, Huxley and Forster then panic. :gonk:
I can second Frankenstein though, I did enjoy that.

Blech, this is why I have trouble with classics. I look at them all and think "I've already read a bunch by that author" or "But I know the story already" or "Ew, I remember hating that guy in school." I want to read them, but so few look appealing.

Ok I have a question about Manga's... When you read a manga all the way through, What constitutes as a book? The whole thing? Or one volume of the story?

Ok I know it says I started in July but actually I posted this and never actually started reading and now it's 8/13/2011 and I have started school and can go to the library at my school so I'm a lot more willing to read now that I have a whole library of books to read that I can easily go to monday through friday so I'm just going to start my list now. Plus in my english class we do book reports I found out so now reading books is also part of doing school work so I'll have more time to read because in school we have to make time. So doing school work will get this done too.
Demona Jay's book list for 2011 Done:
Currently reading:
Catherine Asaro
 Catch the lightning
goal for right now: 5 books ( goal will change as I reach them )
pages read so far 228

Another book down! Woo! At the 15 mark, not great but hey I'm a busy gal. :)
----------
Knerd: Iltu: KatMagenta: I have a collection of 50 classic books on my bookshelf in a room a beautiful hardback set I got for £20 off my librarian. However I haven't yet read too many of them. But I do love most of the more gritty classic. I'm not a fan of the flowery ones at all, but the darker ones like The picture of Dorian Gray and Wuthering Heights are favourites of mine. :) I love the character Heathcliff so much he is so complex and you know you should loathe but you can't help but love him because he is so deeply alluring. Also I love how Oscar Wilde writes, one of my all time hero's. Sherlock Holmes is another favourite classic of mine, the opening of a study in scarlet is just stunning and I would encourage anyone and everyone to read at least the first page.
Finally I completely adore 1984 by George Orwell, Winston really is a true brit. xD

Nineteen Eighty-Four and The Picture of Dorian Gray are sitting on my bookcase judging me for having not read them. I can feel it.
I just finished another of The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes novels because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Doctor Watson simply didn't write record enough stories. >.<

KatMagenta: Lmao! No he didn't! I love a study in scarlet so much it is so beautiful. Have you watched the tv series 'Sherlock'? That should satisfy your appetite for Mr. Holmes a little.
And I thoroughly suggest you pick up one of them right away. If you are in the mood for beautiful description and complexity, go for Dorian Gray. If you are in the mood for some good old British Sarcasm, then go for 1984. Both excellent reads.
Me and my friend were talking about literature this morning, she has had so many recommendations for me, including Lolita and all sorts of other things, it got me all fired up to read again. Nine more books before I need to go to the library again though. :(

I'm a massive Sherlock fan and am impatiently awaiting the second series. They're repeating the first from the 20th so I'm going to get my friend- who is a massive canon and '09 Holmes fan- to watch it.
There's a few unread library books to finish first but I'll try and fit them around the rest of my reading backlog (stop judging me, books) and the le Carré omnibus I ordered that should arrive soon.
Recommendations are always good. Glad you're getting some as well as giving them out. =)

I'm late, but that's better than never, right?
A book is whatever you want it to be. If you're happy listing just one volume, then you can count it that way. If you feel like you'd be cheating yourself to add multiple volumes, then you can count the series. The only person judging you here is you, so just do whatever makes you feel most comfortable with the challenge. :)

Thanks from me too, I didn't realise there were giveaways. Entered a couple, probably won't get them because I haven't written any reviews... then on the front page see a girl has 'reviewed' the Twilight series with a few variations on "I LOVED IT!!!!". -_-
Going to read 1984 next so it stops judging me and because Huxley mentioned it every twelve seconds in Brave New World Revisited.
