The classic is Sailor Moon, of course.
Then there's all the Pretty Cures, or Precure for short.

I'm pondering getting on anime44.com and watching some subbed Sailor Moon to see what it's like before it got lame in English dubbing....

I'm currently addicted to Suite Precure, a magical girls series with a strong music theme.

Here's a link to the Pretty Cure wiki page for Suite Precure, cause I'm no good with long explanations WITHOUT spoilers.

I like some magical girl shows, but I find some others to be too saccharine.

Some that I like:

Pretty Sammy (I know.... kind of a spoof on the genre, but still fun!)
Magic User's Club

I like the old school magical girl animes (Sailormoon being my favorite) like Wedding Peach, Nurse Angel Ririka, Akazukin ChaCha, Kaitou Jeanne, etc. The newer series that come out these days seem to always have recycled plots and lack originality, with the exception of Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch.

My two favorites would have to be Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Puni Puni Poemy although PMMM is massively depressing and PPP is more of a spoof on magic girls

Sailor Moon will always be number one in my heart! :) I might just go watch the subbed episodes to remember of better times.

I remember watching Magic User's Club as well back when I was still in middle school. Oh my goodness, it was too funny. I unfortunately didn't get to watch many episodes because I only bought the first DVD. Of course, this was before I knew one could search online. I haven't gone online and searched for any yet!

I got to admit I really got into Shugo Chara as well because it was absolutely super adorable, even if it was cliche. XD Puella Magi Madoka Magica was so depressing but so bittersweet. It wasn't like the other magic girl series'. <3

Really, the only magical girl anime that I've watched and really adored was Sailor Moon. I love that the manga is being rereleased with a better translation! Thank you Kodansha! I've always been one of the minority of fans, it seems, who likes Chibiusa. Her and Usagi are my favorites.

Although, I did enjoy Magic Knight Rayearth. I've seen only the first season though. I read the manga for Tokyo Mew Mew, and it was okay. Otherwise, I can't really recall to many other magical girl series that I've watched/read.

Sailor Moon will always be the best magical girl series, in my opinion.

A series I just got caught up on is Shugo Chara. Its basically about a group of elementary school kids who are gifted with the powers of their Shugo Chara's and ... its hard to explain. Watch the first episode , it gives a pretty good intro into the story.

Princess Tutu is another one I like and recommend. Its really short, twenty-five episodes. Its about a writer's own little world he created with his stories and the writing process displayed by these fairytale characters. Its really interesting and quite unique for a magical girl series. Here's the wiki if I didn't explain it very well. And the English dub sucks even more than most dubs, just so you're forewarned.

I've always loved magical girls. I'm currently watching Smile! Precure. I also recently watched Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri, a series about three young girls who transform into magical idols to save a land of fairy tales. Fans of Smile! Precure might like it.

I'm about to start watching the 1973 Cutie Honey, although it's more of a shonen anime than a shoujo. I'm also thinking about re-watching Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, although not a true magical-girl series it has many elements of one. (If you are under 17 years old, I do not recommend you watching Panty and Stocking.)

Ahem... *points to user name* lol

I love magical girl series, though in recent years I have become more picky about them (and anime in general). I see the Pretty Cure series and a part of me wants to watch them but then they all look the same. Color coded anime stereotypes.

Magic Knight Rayearth was an amazing series, both the manga and anime. Magical Girl is my preferred anime genre but it takes a good series to keep my attention. Part of me wonders if I had never seen Sailor Moon before and only saw it now for first time would I still like it as much. 200 episodes and it tended to be very predictable, the manga was awesome though.

I watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica recently and absolutely love it's dark atmosphere. I use to love magical girl shows but they can be too sugary sweet and predictible. Madoka was a nice change and I hope to see more series go in that direction.

As for Sailor Moon, it was my first anime and will always hold a special part in my heart.
I only saw a couple of episodes of the original Precure. It seemed ok but couldn't get into it but might not of given it a decent chance. The Precure Series overall does seem too young for me now.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica was easily my favourite Magical Girl show because it was such an effective deconstruction of the genre. Sailor Moon was my first, but rewatching it a year or so ago was painful (maybe because I rewatched the majority of it in the dub. Darn Canadians can't get anything right.) I haven't watched past season 1, yet.

I also watched Ultra Maniac, which has some magical girl themes. It was a good show, definitely worth watching.

well, being a guy, they only reason i watched Sailor Moon growing up was because it came on right before DBZ. It wasn't until i saw Card Captor Sakura did i actually started liking the magical girl genre. Tokyo Mew Mew was also another one i liked.

I recently finished watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which i have a bit of a love/hate relationship with. I like it because it is is a different view of the genre, showing a darker side of things. also, the animation for the show is great (especially for the witches, which are down right trippy). Still, it is very depressing and twisted, and i hate the opening to the show because it lies to me every time i watch it..

I like Magical Girl shows that don't really seem like magical girl shows, except maybe Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which is the complete opposite. XD Most of them I learned though my baby sister. Shugo Chara and Rozen Maiden are the first that come to mind.
