Abnegation
Definition:
1. to refuse or deny oneself (some rights, conveniences, etc.); reject; renounce.
2. to relinquish; give up

Traits:
Sit quietly and wait. Bow heads, a sign of respect, when greeting each other. Not manipulative, but not forthright.

Physical Traits:
Clothing is all gray and simple. The only adornment allowed is a watch. Female Abnegation typically wear their hair in a bun/knot.

Rapport:
Rivals with the Erudite Faction

Leader:
No official leader; led by governmental council including Abnegation member Marcus Eaton

Abnegation is one of the five factions in the world of Divergent, the one and only faction dedicated to selflessness and forgetting oneself for the sake of others.

Abnegation was formed by those who blamed selfishness for human nature's faults. They believe in selfless actions and attaining peace through the elimination of selfishness.

Discription
There Emblem is a circle in which are out stretched arms with clasped hands which represents there selflessness.

Virtue
Abnegation value the virtue of selflessness over any other. Abnegation initiates upon attaining membership are forced to reject a life of vanity and self-indulgence, protecting themselves from greed and envy which are considered forms of selfishness. Gossiping, using the mirror for long periods of time and buying luxury items are forbidden. As an Abnegation, the focus of their lives will be in serving others instead of themselves, anything done for self-enjoyment is thereby discouraged. Members are expected to be compliant to others at all times, even if that person is in Abnegation as well. They take the stairs and allow the elevators to be used by others. It is not unnatural for strangers on the streets to see an Abnegation helping with things such as carrying groceries or treating injuries. Immoral actions are not a trait of an Abnegation such as the usage of guns for violence. The faction mandates that guns be only used for self-defense. Their morally incorruptible quality makes them the only reasonable faction to be able to govern the city as political leaders. Because of their apparent submissive nature, it oftentimes allow other factions to think of them as weak.

Physical Traits
Members of Abnegation upon being initiated are mandated to be free of self-indulgency. As such, they must wear no clothing that might otherwise be gluttonous or luxurious. Clothing is all gray and simple and the only adornment allowed is a watch. Female Abnegation typically wear their hair in a bun/knot. Male Abnegation are known to cut their hair very short.

Functions
All of the fifty councilmen who rule the government are representatives from Abnegation, since their commitment to selflessness would supposedly allow them to make rational decisions for the sake of others.

Faction-Relations
Abnegation, despite being seen as peaceful, neutral, and calm, have a fierce ongoing rivalry with the Erudite. Abnegation is in charge of the government, and the Erudite, who seek power, believe that they are in fact selfish people who only provide for their own faction. It is very rare for a child born into Abnegation transfer to Erudite and vice-versa. This means that parents and family of the Abngeation who switch to Erudite cannot visit their children as Erudite have banned the Abnegation from entering their compund.

Stiff is slang for Abnegation, and is commonly used by the Dauntless to describe those from Abnegation. Abnegation transfers to Dauntless are rare. The Dauntless have little respect for the peace and seeming weakness and cowardice of the Abnegation; the Abnegation would likely have little to do with the Dauntless, as their faction provides the defense and military for all the factions, and the Abnegation do not approve of violence or weapons except in times of self-defense.

Abnegation is generally on good terms with Amity.

Abnegation's relationship with Candor is more or less unknown.

Abnegation Manifesto
"I will be my undoing If I become my obsession.

I will forget the ones I love If I do not serve them.

I will war with others If I refuse to see them.

Therefore I choose to turn away from my reflection,

To rely not on myself

But on my brothers and sisters,

To project always outward

Until I disappear." *

(*Some members add a final line: “And only God remains.” That is at the discretion of each member, and is not compulsory.)

Abnegation Initiation
Abnegation's initiation ceremony is a quiet affair. The initiates, who spend thirty days performing community service before they can become full members, sit side by side on a bench. One of the older members reads the Abnegation manifesto, then all of the older members wash the initiates feet. Then they all share a meal, each person serving food to the person on his left

Erudity
Definition:
Characterized by great knowledge; learned or scholarly.

Traits:
Chat about books and newspapers; in constant pursuit of knowledge. Curiosity- it drives them to seek knowledge.

Physical Traits:
Most members wear glasses no matter how perfect their vision is. Each member must wear at least one piece of blue clothing.

Rapport:
Rivals with the Abnegation Faction.

Leader:
Jeanine Matthews

Erudite is one of the five factions in the world of Divergent, the one and only faction dedicated to knowledge, intelligence, curiosity, and astuteness. It was formed by those who blamed ignorance for the war that had occured in the past causing them to split into factions in the first place.

Erudite was formed by those who blamed human ignorance for the faults of society. They formed Erudite as a way of eliminating ignorance and darkness from human minds.

Over time, Erudite became a faction that eventually steered away from its original belief (along with Dauntless). Its' members became greedy for power, a likely result from their yearning for knowledge.

Description
Their symbol is a single blue eye that probably represents their knowledge of the world. Erudite's leader is Jeanine Matthews, proven to be the smartest member of the faction based on her IQ level.

Virtue
Erudite values the virtue of intelligence and wisdom over any other. The members focus their lives on the pursuit of knowledge. Erudite are expected to delegate themselves in the library reading books, or, most commonly, reading something from the computer. They are also known to have memorized the city map. Members are also known to be particularly eloquent.

Because of the Erudite's thirst for knowledge, they are the ones easily susceptible to moral corruption as knowledge leads to lust for power. Jeanine Matthews is an evident example of this trait.

Physical Traits
Each member must wear at least one article of blue clothing per day. Erudite's main color is blue, as it is a "calming color that helps stimulate the brain". Also, most faction members wear thick glasses to make them seem smarter.

Functions
The faction produces most of the city's librarians, doctors, scientists, and teachers. They are responsible for keeping records of the city and the factions. All technological achievements that the factions benefit from came from Erudite minds, such as the advanced agrarian methods employed by the Amity and all of the simulation serums.

Faction-Relations
Erudite harbor a fierce grudge against Abnegation, believing that they are secret-keepers who are not nearly as selfless as they seem. They seek power over the government, and on many occasions sabotage members of Abnegation to get what they want. They have a pretty close relationship with Amity. No relationship is stated between Erudite and Candor.

Manifesto
We submit the following statements as truth:

1.'Ignorance' is defined not as stupidity but as lack of knowledge.Lack of knowledge inevitably leads to lack of understanding.
2.Lack of understanding leads to a disconnect among people with differences.
3.Disconnection among people with differences leads to conflict.
4.Knowledge is the only logical solution to the problem of conflict.
Therefore, we propose that in order to eliminate conflict, we must eliminate the disconnect among those with differences by correcting the lack of understanding that arises from ignorance with knowledge.

The areas in which people must be educated are:

1. Sociology

So that the individual understands how society at large functions.

2. Psychology

So that the individual understands how a person functions within that society.

2. Mathematics

So that the individual is prepared for further study in science, engineering, medicine, and technology.

3. Science

So that the individual better understands how the world operates. So that the individual's study in other areas is supplemented. So that as many individuals as possible area prepared to enter the feilds devoted to innovation and progress.

4. Communication

So that the individual knows how to speak and write clearly and effectively.

5. History: So that the individual understands the mistakes and successes that have led us to this point. So that the individual learns to emulate those successes and avoid those mistakes.

Leaders must not be chosen based on charisma, popularity, or ease of communication, all of which are misleading and have little to do with the efficacy of a political leader. An objective standard must be used in order to determine who is best fit to lead. That standard will be an intelligence test, administered to all adults when the present leader reaches fifty-five or begins to decline is function in a demonstrable way.

Those who, after rigorous studying, do not meet a minimum intelligence requirement will be exiled from the faction so they can be made useful. This is not an act of elitism but rather one of practicality: Those who are not intelligent enough to engage in the roles assigned to us-- roles that require a considerable mental capacity--are better suited to menial work than to faction work. Menial work is required for the survival of society, and is therefore just as important as faction work.

Information must always be made available to all faction members at all times. The withholding of information is punishable by reprimand, imprisonment, and, eventually, exile. Every question that can be answered must be answered or at least engaged. Illogical thought processes must be challenged when they arise. Wrong answers must be corrected. Correct answers must be affirmed. If an answer to a question is unclear, it must be put to debate. All debates require evidence. Any controversial thought or idea must be supplemented by evidence in order to reduce the potential for conflict.

Intelligence must be used for the benefit, and not to the detriment, of society. Those who use intelligence for their own personal gain or to the detriment of others have not properly borne the responsibility of their gift, and are not welcome in our faction.

It bears repeating: Intelligence is a gift, not a right. It must not be wielded not as a weapon but as a tool for the betterment of others.

Initiation
Not much is revealed of the Erudite initiation, but from the manifesto, they most likely study, and take rigorous tests. It is also stated by that there is an initiation intelligence test that, if not passed, results in one becoming factionless. It is also revealed that each of the initiates is trained in a certain subject of expertise in Erudite.

Dauntless
Definition:
Fearless, undaunted, and brave. Courageously resolute, especially in the face of danger or difficulty; not discouraged.

Traits:
Bravery, courage, fighting and physical skills.

Physical Traits:
All-black clothes, tattoos, and piercings

Rapport:
Neutral with all factions

Dauntless is one of the five factions in the world of Divergent, the one and only faction dedicated to bravery, nerve, and elimination of fear. It was formed by those who blamed cowardice for human nature's faults.

History
Formation
Dauntless was a faction formed by those who blamed cowardice for human nature's faults. They formed Dauntless around the principle of eliminating fear believing bravery will lead to a more perfect society.

Description
Their emblem is a circle in which are flames representing there fearlessness
.
Virtue
The Dauntless value the virtue of bravery over any other, as such they train to fight and use weapons to prepare their bodies to respond to threats and challenges, which is necessary if they want to survive life as a Dauntless member. The faction also emphasizes the idea of freedom from fear, and test this daily by attempting death-defying feats. Dauntless members and initiates are the only ones allowed to ride the train and do so in a daring way; jumping onto and off the train while it is moving.

Characteristics
The Dauntless are the only faction that have their members, upon reaching a certain age that hinders their ability to uphold the virtue of their faction, become Factionlessor choose to die. Hence, the faction does not have a member that is of old-age. When it comes to funerals, the Dauntless have it immediately after they are pronounced dead because they want to acknowledge the death as soon as it happens. It is more of a celebration and there is a lot of drinking. Every member gets a certain amount of points to spend per month, they spend their points on clothing and other resources as they see fit. The traditional jobs of Dauntless include but are not limited to: Fence Guard, City's security force, tattoo artist, weapon maker, fighting for entertainment, or as a Dauntless leader. Some members volunteer to do jobs that traditionally belong to other factions in order to have them closer and not make members go far way (i.e. nurses).

Physical Traits
Dauntless always dress in black. The women wear skin-tight pants, tights, tight dresses, and black boots and shoes. The men wear black pants and form-fitting shirts. Dauntless like to tattoo and pierce their bodies. Girls might wear dark eyeliner and makeup.

Functions
The people of Dauntless are in charge of the city's security, protecting its inhabitants from threats within and without. The Dauntless were previously responsible in policing the Factionless sectors of the city until the City Council voted to relieve them of that duty. Their main task is to guard the fence that surrounds the city. It is considered a dangerous job, but it is also a necessary one and it seems likely that this is part of the reason no other faction has a disagreement with Dauntless. They maintain the city gates which are locked from the inside.

Faction-Relations
Despite being the most warlike faction, Dauntless appears to have a smoothly neutral relationship with the other factions. While Erudite and Abnegation fight for government control and Candor and Amity fight over peace and deception, Dauntless are seen as the fighters. They prove to be good allies as they are trained in the art of fighting and honing physical skills. However, a chasm in the Dauntless faction reminds its members that there is not always a big difference between bravery and idiocy.

Children born into Dauntless rarely leave the faction, as it is easy to remain brave if you were raised in a similar manner from childhood. Children born in Candor and Erudite are the most common transfers to this faction.

Dauntless Manifesto
"We believe that cowardice is to blame for the world’s injustices. We believe that peace is hard-won, that sometimes it is necessary to fight for peace.

But more than that:

■We believe that justice is more important than peace.
■We believe in freedom from fear, in denying fear the power to influence our decisions.
■We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.
■We believe in acknowledging fear and the extent to which it rules us.
■We believe in facing that fear no matter what the cost to our comfort, our happiness, or even our sanity.
■We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves.
■We believe, not just in bold words but in bold deeds to match them.
■We believe that pain and death are better than cowardice and inaction because we believe in action.
■We do not believe in living comfortable lives.
■We do not believe that silence is useful.
■We do not believe in good manners.
■We do not believe in empty heads, empty mouths, or empty hands.
■We do not believe that learning to master violence encourages unnecessary violence.
■We do not believe that we should be allowed to stand idly by.
■We do not believe that any other virtue is more important than bravery."
Dauntless Initiation
■The initiates are separated during the first stage of initiation. The Dauntless born initiates are trained by a older dauntless born, and the transfers and trained by a older transfer.
■They take the initiation process very seriously.
■There are three stages to Dauntless initiation: The physical, the emotional, and the mental.
■The Dauntless born initiates and the transfers are scored separately for the first stage, which is physical combat.
■In the physical stage, initiates learn how to fight and are pitted against each other to prove what they have learned. They are scored based on their victories and losses.
■In the emotional stage, initiates are put into a simulation where they face their fears, oblivious to the fact that it is a simple simulation, and have to calm themselves to get out. Members of Divergent seem to have a knack for this stage, as they are aware it is not real.
■In the final stage, the mental, initiates are put into their fear landscapes, which reaches for every fear within the person subjected to it and creates a simulation in which they must face each one. This time, they are aware that it is not real.
■The initiates all sleep in the same room (boys and girls).
■The Dauntless provide the transfers with some basic black clothing at the beginning of initiation.
■Those not in the top five of each initiation class typically end up as guards.
■It is tradition for initiates to divide into two teams and play capture the flag at the Navy Pier during initiation.
■Advice for initiates on Visiting Day: “If your families happen to visit you, try not to seem too attached. We take the phrase ‘faction before blood’ very seriously here.”
■Initiation Day is chaos. People are everywhere and many of them are drunk.

Trivia
■Muffins and Toast for breakfast. (Muffins are preferred.)
■Chocolate cake is their dessert of choice.
■When members pass their physical prime they are asked to leave in one way or another, either death or becoming factionless.
■The paths in the Dauntless compound are treacherous and hard to climb. Physical endurance and capability is required to be a member. Once members can no longer climb them, they cannot be a member of Dauntless.

Amity
Definition:
1. friendship; peaceful harmony.
2. mutual understanding and a peaceful relationship, especially between nations; peace; accord.
3. cordiality

Traits:
They love music, art, games, and laughter. They give hugs when greeting.

Physical Traits:
Members dress comfortably in red and yellow clothing.

Rapport:
Rivals with the Candor Faction

Leader:
No official leader; but rather a representative in Johanna Reyes

Amity is one of the five factions in the world of Divergent, and the one and only faction dedicated to peacefulness, kindness, generosity, and neutrality. Amity was formed by those who blamed war and fighting for human nature's faults.

History

Formation
Amity was a faction by those who blamed war and violence for human natures' faults. They formed Amity in order to have a peaceful society free from conflict and sadness caused by wars and instigation.

Description
Thier emblem is a circle with a tree in the middle represtening thier love for the earth.

Physical Traits
As the faction that symbolizes happiness and freedom from human conflict, member generally wear clothing that is bright and pleasant. Their attire consists of clothes that are red and yellow. Their dress code is less formal than other factions and an Erudite transfer could wear his blue jeans without causing uproar.

Faction-Relations
Amity has a somewhat egregious rivalry with Candor, as the Candor believe that "those who seek peace will always deceive to keep the waters calm." Candor is obviously composed of the honest, so they naturally oppose liars. Amity, however, believes you can simply tell a little white lie to keep the peace. Amity rely on Erudite to provide them with technological advancements to improve the quality of the crops they grow.

Amity Manifesto
Conversations of Peace

■Trust
A son says to his Mother:

“Mother, today I fought with my friend.”
His Mother says: “Why did you fight with your friend?”
“Because he demanded something of me, and I would not give it to him.”
“Why did you not give it to him?”
“Because it was mine.”
“My son, you now have your possessions, but you do not have your friend. Which would you rather have?”
“My friend.”
“Then give freely, trusting that you will also be given what you need.”

■Self-Sufficiency
A Daughter says to her father:

“Father, today I fought with my friend.”
Her Father says: “Why did you fight with your friend?”
“Because she insulted me, and I was angry.”
“Why were you so angry?”
“Because she lied about me.” (In some versions: “Because I was hurt by her words.”)
“My daughter, did your friend’s words change who you are?”
“No.”
“Then do not be angry. The opinions of others cannot damage you.”

■Forgiveness
A Husband says to his Wife:

“Wife, today I fought with my enemy.”
His wife says: “Why did you fight with your enemy?”
“Because I hate him.”
“My husband, why do you hate him?”
“Because he wronged me.”
“The wrong is past. You must let it rest where it lies.”

■Kindness
A Wife says to her Husband:

“Husband, today I fought with my enemy.”
Her Husband says: Why did you fight with your enemy?”
“Because I spoke cruel words to her.”
“My wife, why did you speak cruel words to her?”
“Because I believed them to be true.”
“Then you must no longer think cruel thoughts. Cruel thoughts lead to cruel words, and hurt you as much as they hurt their target.”

■Involvement
One Friend says to Another:

“Friend, today I fought with my enemy.”
The Other Friend says:

“Why did you fight with your enemy?”
“Because they were about to hurt you.”
“Friend, why did you defend me?”
“Because I love you.”
“Then I am grateful.”

Beliefs
■Value peace and kindness.
■Blame conflict and hatred for the world's problems.
■Remain neutral in times of war.
■It is perfectly acceptable to lie to keep the peace.

Facts
■The Amity appear to run the farms on the outside of the city's perimeter, though they also proved "understanding counselors" and caretakers, such as those you would find in a hospital.
■They wear articles of clothing containing the colors yellow and/or red.
■Once the war between the factions started, members from other factions began to seek refuge with the Amity.
■Their current representative is a woman named Johanna Reyes.
■Rather than voting on a large decision within the faction, members converse until they can all come upon an agreement as to what sort of decision should be made.
■They traditionally great others with a hug.
■When Amity members have an altercation they are taken to the Conflict Room where they are injected with the Peace Serum, a drug designed to calm and improve the mood.
■They drug their bread in order to keep members of their faction happy.
■The only artists left are from this faction.

Initiation Process
From what we can gather it involves fruit-picking and singing songs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Candor
Definition:
1. the state or quality of being frank, open, and sincere in speech or expression; candidness
2. freedom from bias; fairness; impartiality.

Traits:
Honest, trustworthy, sound leaders, and able to read body language to detect lies.

Physical Traits:
Black and white clothes. Black suits with white ties for men.

Rapport:
Rivals with the Amity Faction.

Leader:
No official leader, Representative Jack Kang

Candor is one of the five factions in the world of Divergent, and was formed by those who blamed duplicity and deception for human nature's faults. Because of this, the Candor are known to value honesty, and their symbol is a set of scales bound by a circle.

History
Formation
Candor was a faction formed by those who blamed duplicity and deception, who believed that dishonesty is the key fault in human nature which began evil and war. They believe in the principle that honesty and openness would lead to a more peaceful and perfect society. Many children born into Candor transfer to Dauntless, since honesty and bravery are closely related.

Candor are serious about their views on honesty against dishonesty. Some might describe the Candor as being honest to a fault — even, in some cases, so honest as to be insulting. But a true member of the Candor faction would rather insult someone then stoop to lying; likewise, a member of Candor would rather be insulted than lied to. They view complete and utter honesty as the ultimate perfection.

Their substance in the Choosing Ceremony is glass, and they wear black and white clothing because they see the truth as only black and white. Throughout the years, the Candor faction provided the people with trustworthy and sound leaders in law. Candor children are seen to make wide gestures with their hands and often appear to be arguing or having intense discussions. They are very truthful and would frankly and tactlessly say what they feel.

Physical Traits
The Candor believe that the truth is black-and-white, so that is what they wear. Typically they dress formally, with suits and ties being standard uniform with men and women seen in long skirts.

Functions
Candor are said to make sound leaders in law.

Faction-Relations
Candor members are often rivals of the members of Amity, as "those who seek peace will always deceive to keep the waters calm". Their rivalry is probably not as fierce as the one between Erudite and Abnegation, but is still a serious problem.

It is likely that Candor would see Abnegation as similar to Amity -- lying to keep the peace, and self-denial as a form of lying (not being true to and honest with oneself).

Candor has a decent relationship with Dauntless because bravery and honesty can tie together closely, and Dauntless' wildness and "recklessness" would likely be seen as another form of honesty to those from Candor (being honest about oneself and one's predilections).

Candor's relationship with Erudite seems to be dependent on each individual Candor member; in Insurgent some Candors allied with Erudite, while others allied with Dauntless, once Dauntless was free of Erudite's control and many of the members of Dauntless decided to fight back against Erudite.

Candor Manifesto

"Dishonesty is rampant, Dishonesty is temporary, Dishonesty makes evil possible."

As it stands now, lies pervade society, families, and even the internal life of the individual. One group lies to another group, parents lie to children, children lie to parents, individuals lie to themselves. Dishonesty has become so integral to the way we relate to one another that we rarely find ourselves in authentic relationships with others. Our dark secrets remain our own.

Yet it is our secrets that cause conflict. When we are dishonest with the people around us, we begin to hate ourselves for lying; when we are dishonest with ourselves, we can never attempt to correct the flaws we find within us, the flaws we are so desperate to hide from our loved ones, the flaws that make us lie.

What has become clear is that lies are just a temporary solution to a permanent problem. Lying to spare a person’s feelings, even when the truth would help them to improve, damages them in the long run. Lying to protect yourself lasts for so long before the truth emerges. Like a wild animal, the truth is too powerful to remain caged. These are examples we clearly see in our own lives, yet we fail to understand that they do not just apply to the dynamic between ourselves and our neighbors, or ourselves and our friends.

What is society but a web of individual-to-individual relationships? And what is conflict except one person’s dark secret crashing into another person’s dark secret? Dishonesty is a veil that shields one person from another. Dishonesty allows evil to persist, hidden from eyes of those who would fight it.

"Dishonesty leads to suspicion. Suspicion leads to conflict. Honesty leads to peace."

We have a vision of an honest world. In this world, parents do not lie to their children, and children do not lie to their parents; friends do not lie to one another; spouses do not lie to each other. When we are asked our opinions we are free to give them without having to consider any other responses. When we engage in conversation with others, we do not have to evaluate their intentions, because they are transparent. We have no suspicion, and no one suspects us.

And most of all — yes, above all else —we are free to expose our dark secrets because we know the dark secrets of our neighbors, our friends, our spouses, our children, our parents, and our enemies. We know that while we are flawed in a unique way, we are not unique because we are flawed. Therefore we can be authentic. We have no suspicions. And we are at peace with those around us.

"Truth makes us transparent. Truth makes us strong. Truth makes us inextricable."

We will raise our children to tell the truth. We will do this by encouraging them to speak their minds at every moment. For the child, withholding words is the same as lying. We will be honest with our children even at the expense of their feelings. The only reason people cannot bear honesty now is because they were not raised hearing the truth about themselves, and they can’t stand to. If children are raised to hear both honest praise and honest criticism, they will not be so fragile as to crumble beneath the scrutiny of their peers. A life of truth makes us strong. Adulthood will be defined as a time at which each member of society is capable of bearing every other member’s dark secrets, just as every other member will be subjected to The Full Unveiling in which every hidden part of their life is laid bare before their fellow members. They, too, will see the hidden parts of their fellow members’ lives. In this way we bear one another’s secrets. In this way we become inextricable. The truth makes us inextricable."

Beliefs
■Value honesty.
■See truth as black or white.
■Blame duplicity for the world's problems.
■Believe that politeness is "deception in pretty packaging".
Candor InitiationEditTo become a member of Candor, members must take lie detector tests all day, every day. During the final test initiates get "truth serum" and must sit in front of everyone as they ask questions. They believe if you reveal all of your secrets, you'll have no desire to lie about anything, ever again because the worst is already in the open.

Facts
■Tell the truth in all aspects of the aptitude test, including when shown a picture of a man and asked to identify him.
■Keep pets.
■Learn to read body language so that they know when someone is lying or keeping something from them.
■You always know where you stand with others, because they tell you. There is no manipulation.
■Located in a building that used to be called "merchandise mart"- often referred to as "merciless mart".
■When allowing members of other factions to take refuge in their headquarters they must be interrogated under the truth serum.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Factionless

Failure to complete initiation into whatever faction you choose, living in poverty, doing the work no one else wants to do (janitors, construction works, garbage collectors, make fabric, operate trains, drive buses). For their work, they get food and clothing, but not enough of either.

One living in poverty and discomfort. Divorced from society and separated from community with no purpose or reason to live.
