Has anyone else on Mene read this wonderful book series? I'm so addicted to it at the moment, that I got super excited when I found an obsidian arrow-head [which I promptly bought and turned it into a necklace. :D]
If you've read it - How far into the series are you? Who is your favorite character? Your favorite couple[Canon or not ;)] And how do you think the series should end!
I had a huge post that ended up being deleted and not enough energy to retype it all so short version.
Read to book 3.
fav characters: Arya, Daenerys, John Snow, and Tyrion.
couples: Eddard and Catelyn.... also a weird pairing of Arya and John, just because they have a great sibling relationship and know each other so well... though it would be very very very weird. *laughs*
I don't know how it should end. We'll have to wait and see.
I'm all caught up so far! Can't wait for book six and seven to come out! [Or season 2 in April for that matter!]
I agree with you on Tyrion and Dany! But Sandor and Brienne are my other picks. :] Though I do like Jon and Arya as well! [Who am I kidding, I love them all! With few exceptions... Margery Tyrelle. I dislike her immensely!]
And, it is a common fan speculation that Jon is not actually Eds son, so you might have a less twisted coupling than you think.
My all time favorite at the moment is Sandor and Sansa. I'm so in love with those two together! I shall never believe he is dead! [As it is another common speculation that the "Hound" is dead, and not Sandor Clegane. : ) ]
I'm planning on reading the series after I'm done reading the Deverry saga (really good as well). My boyfriend is reading A Song of Ice and Fire and he's very excited about it. Usually he's not really into fantasy, I'm more the fantasy reader. He even named his hamster Arya, really cute.
I got the book for Christmas, I'm about halfway through. Love Eddard and Catelyn, they're awesome. I used to not care much for Daenerys, but then she got all awesome against her brother so she gained respect. Hate Sansa with a passion. Love just about everyone else though. But yeah, couple would probably be ned/catelyn
AHHHHH, I'm so glad I found this thread on Mene! I am absolutely obsessed with the series, both bookwise and television wise. I first started watching the TV show before I realized that there was a book series, and for once in my life I can't decide whether I like the books or TV show more.
I'm currently on the fourth book, and I'm rooting for Dany and Jon to get together (even though they haven't met each other yet, if at all). In love with the Starks, Dany, Tyrion, and even Jaime's growing on me. It's just a shame that so many characters are dying :(
I'm so glad you bumped this up! I hadn't seen this thread before either.
So many of friends enjoyed the tv show, but I simply couldn't follow it without knowing the story beforehand. So, starting this past January, I marathon-read through all the books. I was instantly hooked! Martin has such a deft way of creating 3-dimensional characters that you can both root for and pray to see their downfall.
I really love Brienne. I really like seeing an active female character who directly involves herself in the events around her. Yet unlike Cersei, say, she isn’t completely defined by her gender and manages to advance herself without resorting to her sexuality or manipulation. And unlike someone like Arya, her motives aren’t completely built on revenge. I have a lot of respect for Brienne.
Knerd: Are you all done with the series now? Well, with all the books that have came out thus far.
I definitely agree with you when it comes to George Martin's imagination. I heard he had LoTR for inspiration (which I'm ashamed to say I've never read), but despite that, it's crazy. All the Houses, sigils, character plots, etc. I don't know if I'd have the space for all that in my head.
Going to have to disagree with you a bit on Brienne. Thus far I see her as someone who's trying to deny her gender. Whereas Cersei does indeed use her beauty as a weapon, I get the feeling that Brienne doesn't like being referred to as a female (with words like "wench" and "woman" annoying her). That said, I've only just begun the fourth book and she's still on her goose chase!
Yep, I've finished them all up! I'll be waiting on pins and needles until he finishes writing the entire series.
To be fair, I wouldn't like being called "woman" or "wench" either, especially if I had an official title. It's a way for other characters to completely erase her identity. While other women seem to accept that as their place in society (or fight it on a case-by-case basis), but she really pushes for people to acknowledge her and her skills. I can dig that.
Wahs, I don't think I want to finish Dance of Dragons. Train rides to work will be so empty without GoT to keep me company. And I can understand that. I didn't expect her to be more than a minor character, but she's slowly easing her way into the plot.
My favorite minor character, though, has to be Jaqen H'ghar. Or whatever his name is. I kind of spoiled GoT for me when I went to search Jon's true parents, but I cannot wait until his background is unfolded more. He's so interesting!
Hey Knerd! I completely agree with you about Briennne! I think I just want Ayra and Brienne to meet. Ahha, they'd make a pair for sure. <3
And yes - The next book really does need to hurry, lets go light a fire under G.R.R.M's ass. ;)
I just hope it doesn't effect the series... I already have to wait until next year to watch season 3. T___T
I have just recently finished reading Dance with Dragons and I'm very much looking forward to more.
The only thing that I don't really like about the series is that sometimes it can be so depressing you lose faith in humanity. I know that George R R Martin made a good call by not making his world the perfect fantasy setting with honourable knights and fair ladies, but some people in ASOIAF are just so cruel! >.<
Other than that though, I love all the storylines that are happening. Meera Reed is my favourite character because she's being so strong right now, even though she's far from home and has her brother and Bran to look after.
ASOIAF is easily my favourite book series ever. I just finished re-reading the series including the Hedge Knight Tales.
I personally have to say I love the foreshadowing used though out the series. The piece that strikes in my mind clearest is from A Game of Thrones. “When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king”
My favourite character is Mance Rayer. I personally love his origin story. Other then Mance, Arya Stark, Jamie, and Tyrion Lannister, Sandor Clegane, and Dunk from The Hedge Knight Tales are also favourites.
As for how I thing the series will end, I am really thinking Arya will reclaim Winterfell. It is a poetic ending for her story. She has been so many different people, Arya Horseface, Arry, Weasel… this list goes on. She has worked at distancing herself from bring a Stark. I think to have her realise who she truly is, Arya Stark of Winterfell, would be a fitting end to her coming of age story.
Oh! Thors! I love that prediction! I really do hope Arya just rises from the ashes of her world to become something magnificent. She deserves it, she really does.
Who does every one think will be the three heads of the dragon?
I think it is going to be Dany.....
[SPOILER] Aegon, and Brown Ben Plumm. I was talking to a friend of mine today and she was shocked by the idea. I think it makes sense. He claims to be part Targaryen, and Viserion showed affection to him.[/SPOILER]
I dont know how to do the cool spoiler thing, so I just whited out any spoilers :p
I'm about to read the fifth book. I got it for my birthday, but I've had some other stuff I need to read before I get to it. It's excruciating to wait.
I'm not really sure who my favorite character it. Probably a giant cross between Arya, Jamie, Tyrion, Davos, and Sandor (even though he's dead). I also have really been enjoying Sansa's story, but I wouldn't say she's my favorite character.
Honestly, I think my favorite couple(s) have been Ned and Catelyn and Drogo and Dany....which sucks because those were both cut off in the first book. Though I did find Jon Snow's relationship pretty cool to read...even though I can't even remember the woman's name.

You're neglecting to take into account that Jon Snow is very likely the bastard son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

I think that is just a diversion, and don’t agree with the fan theory. I personally hope GRRM doesn’t tell and leave it a mystery. Plus, in my opinion, Jon is too northern and wargish to have the blood of the Dragon.
The fact that I just plain like the theory aside, I really like it because it makes Jon important enough to not be dead right now, which means he'll probably have start his "second life" inside ghost in the next book, which could conceivably lead to Bran being actually useful for a bit as he helps figure out wtf to do about it.
I'm reading through these books for the second time, and knowing who everyone is ahead of time really helps you understand how it all pulls together. Lots of the family names didn't mean anything to me on my first read, but now that I recognize them, it's like... shiiiiiit haha. Loving it. I'm so glad I was able to find a fantasy story where the women don't all have DD cups and bikini armor.
I came to this series a little late to it. Picked it up when I noticed it in the grocery store and it's blurb caught me attention. I am ultimately so happy I picked up the book. I burned through the first four back to back. When I realized that the series still wasn't finished, and that Martin has been taking his time in between books lately... Well, I'm a little hesitant to start the last one. D= I don't want to go through it and then have nothing to read after! It'll drive me nuts!
I've recently discovered this series. I've been trying to get my parents to buy the first book for me. However, I read a few pages in the bookstore, and I think the writing is wonderful. I hope my library gets the series so I can read and reply to this thread properly.
