I am writing this story thats about witches and vampires and other such creatures and i don't have any certain place/location for the story... Uptil now i have mentioned a random name for a high school but there is no specific location given. I have mentioned castles, mountains and woods but again i have no clue as to where they are... Is that a problem? and how do i solve it? would i have to create an imaginary location or do i have to google my brain looking for places where witches reined during the old times... maybe somewhere in 1820's, Maybe!
Please help out, Thanks in advance.

That really depends on what you want to present in the story, what you prefer, what the characters need, which setting matches elements already existing in the story... etc.
You have to at least have an idea what the setting be. Like... mediaval? Chinese? Fantasy? Rural? Tribal? Futuristic?
It is your story, it can be imaginary, a mix of two completely different culture...
It helps to have a setting basic thought well out, mostly for the consistent of the story, better don't confuse the readers. Because writing is not pictorial, it is up to the words to bring out the world, which could be limiting. Therefore, it better not be Mediaval-ish on the first paragraph and turn unto Tudor-ish in the tenth paragraph.
I suggest to have keywords thought out.
1. List down the elements existing in what you have, character? theme? story? event? Keywords.
2. Then list down the atmosphere/era, keywords that you think would compliment or fit the elements you have.
3. Base on the keywords, you can slowly add and cross the elements, slowly building out your location.
4. It does help to look up images, if you are more of a visual dependent person.

Hmm... That was helpful and i will have to look deeper into its origin but tell me do i have to place it in a specific country? or will it be easier to post the first chapter before asking such question?

It's best to know the location in your head even if it never gets stated outright. but if you're thinking woods and castles....somewhere in Germany? The Carpatian mountains might work too. There's a good amount of magical myth around those too, at least for me. Or you can just take what you like about different real places and make your own new place. In a fantasy story, readers don't care as much to be placed somewhere real and specific.

Thanks Kat... i did go through some chapters of my story and what you are saying fits well with it... its not a historical documentary so i dont think a proper place is required though i would still try to look into the carpatian mountains you suggested
Thanks and lets hope i get to post my story here soon.

You do not need to specifically place it in any country, people uses reference from real life because, well, it is easy to 'copy' the setting easier with picture or something already existing. People can reference thing from various thing, because it is something that people know, and would cause less confusion.
Which is why in my first post, I didn't mention ANY country name, I just mention keywords, elements. Because you are writing, keywords works better to have a consistent flow and description.
I think though... your setting/place would need a name for the character to call it. The least thing you have to have, it could be a simple nickname, like the HOME, the Origin... or fancy name inspire from whatever element already existing in the story. It can even simply be a pronoun like... IT. XD Like how Lord VOldemort is call, He WHo Must Not Be Named, Place of Origin...
What I think makes a good strong bond between Story, Character and Setting is the interlace of elements and how they seem to grow from each other.

hmm... right, i had it upside down then, i thought it was important to name a country but i guess in fiction i get the freedom to skip all that. I get your point about the elements and stuff and i think it has all that... i have castles that i have named in accordance to their owners in the story so i guess its ok if they are not really present in our real world
Thanks again...
