Over on the other thread on the issue of Mary Sue, I was pointing out a fact that too many good traits of the Mary Sue, overall is a weakness itself. I put in the perspective that it actually make the Mary Sue a challenging character to write, which is why people don't like it. XD
I think for the case of the unbalanced characters, I like them because I am attracted to Mary Sue characters myself. I can't say if it is the same for others though. But yeah, I love Mary Sue characters. But then, how they work in a story is a whole different case. lol.

I write on WattPad, so it gives you the option to put the name of the celeb that looks almost like your character or you can even put pictures of the actual person the character is based on, and clothes.
Also, since not everyone checks that description I just hint tiny details like 4 times a chapter, like for example "whipping her blonde hair" or "as her icy blue eyes tear", I just find that much more fun and interesting that just giving plain details. (:

I have never heard of WattPad, but it sounds interesting.
I'm not actually sure how i feel about Mary Sue characters yet... i really haven't decided. Part of me is annoyed by too perfect of characters. and part of me probably has written something that could be considered mary sue before and haven't noticed.

I do a little bit of both. Some stuff I write down ahead of time, some stuff the character 'tells' me as I write them. Take my current character I've been focused on, Sophie Warren, for example. She's a rare natural-born necromancer (or so she thinks) that, through the help of her (now missing) uncle and a vampire friend, has been allowed to reach maturity. (Vampires have a nasty habit of killing necromancers since they control the 'dead' and vampires are... well... dead.) I haven't written down much for her past what she is, or what fuels her magic. I keep a malnourished, mini-history for them in my head and the rest fills out as I write.
Like my novel is a bouncy castle, the only idea I have is the deflated shell, really. What I want it to look like. But when I write, it's the air that fills it up and makes it look nice.

Have you ever felt that they are real? Or been so into your characters that when you talk about them to other people its like you're gossiping?
|
Oh my goodness, yes. I have a city of characters living in my brain, and I swear they talk to me. Sometimes trying to figure out how my characters would react to situations I'm in helps me mentally flesh out who they are so I can better understand them and write them better. It helps to make my characters feel more real, I think.

I really like the bouncy castle idea. that's interesting. *high fives* yay for another city of characters in your head!! And that is also a great way to flesh them out. Not sure i've done it exactly like that. But I most definetly have had people think i was gossiping when I was trying to figure out things about my characters, discussing them outloud. (with tate...xD lol )

Here's what I know about Sophie Warren:
She's currently 28 years old and employed at bar owned by the local alpha werewolf. The bar serves mostly fantasy creatures, but occasionally humans (with or without magic) wander in from time to time.
The only reason Sophie (by all rights, a human) is tending the bar is because she's a necromancer. (Not really, she has something called Death's Grace, it's different, but she doesn't know that in the beginning of her story line.)
Seven people know she's a 'necromancer'. Four are dead. Her Uncle is missing. Aidan is her vampire BFF and Kitch is the alpha werewolf that employs her. Not even her parents know.
She has a female human best friend named Lauren.
She lives by herself.
And that's all I know as far as her biography goes.

Bouncy castle? I like that. It reminds me of the inflatable castle thingy...
I know you are not talking about that.
I have this OCD of designing EVERYTHING from the universe down to bacteria. So architecture is in between, I design them too. I would at least get some main shape done, especially those that are usual setting of my story.

I was totally talking about the inflatable bouncy castles. Haha.
I tend to let the world build itself? I'm really good at remembering minute details, so I never really lose track of any continuity. Plus it's like I get to explore the world as I create it, which is fun!

D: I thought your bouncy is a metaphore, as in the castle have a lot of areas you don't know how it work out yet?!
I build and design EVERYTHING that is important to the storyline. Yes. If it is about the costume of the main cast/sub cast, then everything about the costume. BUT not the costume of passer by or those alien that exist only by mention.

It still is a metaphor. Haha.
I have friends who worldbuild like that, but I just can't do it. D: Which makes me feel bad sometimes but we're all different. For instance, I'm just getting into the idea that I don't have to write my novel linearly.

I like to have a basic idea of the setting.
But I'm pretty flexible in what kind of stories i can do.
if its completely my world I like to design the world, than go to characters with their basics, than move into the story and let that develop on its own.

And there is this story, a secret society system, I develop more than 30 names... and I can't remember all of them. T__T

... I have a LOT of secret societies, if not then some sort of elite society in my story. I love 'spy' ish story... to the point that I think I am overusing that kind of 'structure' in ALL my stories. Which seemed to be repetitive.
I remember the background story and the role of the society. It is just the names of the important members that I can't remember. x.x Those are nice names too... but lol, I did keep a record on paper. I was just saying that I can't remember certain details if I left the story untouch for a long period of time.

Nah, I think MOST people would get bored after reading the same 'structure' of story. Like... if they read 100 different fantasy, they will be fed up.
I am not the most people though. XD
