Which do you prefer?

Honestly I prefer subbed because I think most dubs are horridly corny and have bad acting. InuYasha and Hayao Miyazaki's movies are an acception... what about you? Which do you prefer?

If we are talking strictly animation, I very much prefer dubbed. For me acting doesn't figure into it, it's about me being able to follow the story. Feverishly trying to read the dialogue means I'm missing what is going on on screen, and there are plenty of times when the subtitles will move on before I've gotten to the end of the line. In live action, while this is still an issue, I give subbing a slight advantage over dubbing because it's horrible distracting when the mouths don't match up to the words being spoken.

I can't stand dubs.

I don't have a huge experience of either for anime, but I don't mind either if the Japanese voices aren't hideous. I saw a dubbed version of Totoro, and subbed versions of Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. The only issue for me with subbed stuff is you have to give it your full attention.

I prefer dubbed.

I mean sure the original voices might fit the image better, but I prefer to watch anime, not read it.

I can read quickly, so I don't miss anything.
I guess that's one upside to liking subbed.

Subbed is almost always better. InuYasha and Miyazaki movies are my two exceptions as well.

For the most part you will never catch me watching a dubbed anime (or dubbed anything for that matter), but I will occasionally watch a dub simply because I don't have the stamina to read. Sometimes I just want to watch anime to relax/make me fall asleep, and reading keeps me up so I'll watch the dub.

There have been a couple of animes where the original VAs were so annoying that I couldn't listen to them, too. Sailor Moon and Peach Girl come to mind. Their Japanese voices were so high pitched I was getting headaches.

I read the titles so fast I do get to actually watch it. xD Tis' true, to the person that answered below you, you learn to read FAST AND take it all in.

Both? From time to time I will end up watching both versions if they're available. My preference to subbed or dubbed comes with the show itself and what I think of the voice actors. I believe Fruits Basket, the English version, had a voice actor for Yuki I couldn't stand. I don't remember for sure though...

I was watching the dubbed version of Fairy Tail for a while before realizing that it was on Netflix. I got my boyfriend to watch the English version with me for a bit and the pitch changes for the characters confused me.

It can also be entertaining to see how the words change between the two.

I vastly prefer films to be subbed. Because as others have said, I hate it when the dialogue is out of synch with the mouths of the actors. I was on holiday in Lanzarote and Wolf with Jack Nicholson was on the TV. That was bizarre xD As it was being televised in a Spanish country the subtitles were in Spanish, but it was also dubbed, in German.

Needless to say, I didn't watch it.

I'm the same way! Attack on Titan needs to be subbed whereas Tiger and Bunny needs to be dubbed. Depending on the show (and the story), I determine which I want. I find that the more comical the story, the more I enjoy the dubbed versions. For anything that's serious and action packed, I like the subbed.

I am excited to see the Attack on Titan dub, honestly. Probably won't like it, but I want to see it.

I agree that I watch subs because words change a lot. Usually the story and dialogue is so much more meaningful in the original tongue. When they dub things over they tend to lose a lot of words or replace words with other words that only loosely mean the same thing.

I go with dub cause I suck at keeping up with subtitles. Just so long as pick fitting voices for the characters.

Of course I prefer them not dubbing hentai since big time voices would never do that stuff.

Hentai dialogue isn't exactly poetic or sexy, either lmao
I keep that kind of stuff on mute. I'd rather just read hentai manga.

The only reason I've seen most of the anime I have in the first place is due to my friends and because my bestie can't stand dubs (with the exception of Pokemon and Digimon) we're forced to watch in subs with her and thus most of what I've seen is in subs.

Even with such "training" however I find it somewhat difficult to follow them on subs. I not always able to fully distribute my attention evenly between reading the subtitles and watching the characters and actions. At times the subtitles can be too quick for me, not allowing me to finish one line before continuing to the next. This is even when I give the subs my full attention and I can't always. Most of the time my friends and I are having our lunch while we watch causing me to have to take my eyes from the screen to prepare a bite of food and thus missing a bit of dialogue.

This extends to how the fact that I only watch with friends is beneficial because without guests over I pretty much never give the television my full attention. I'm always also on my laptop making posts like this, photoshopping or working on my stories or playing a handheld game, attempting to draw in my sketch book, doing non-computer homework etc.

Overall I am not opposed to subs. I'm actually getting pretty used to them due to my bestie and Fanime con (I've attended with my friends almost every year since I don't even remember) and they have their pros. Such as how the original dialogue is usually stronger and more raw where as emotion, meaning and attitude can get lost in translation due to censoring (from what I've heard it seems Japanese kids are less sheltered) but dubs are undeniably easier for me.

The one exception to this, in which I am as opposed to dub as my bestie is with the Miazaki film 'Ponyo'. I can not stand the Jonas Brothers or the Cyrus sisters who are primarily involved. In addition to their doing the lead voices, a friend claims they murdered the song in the credits.
A few years ago this friend who'd acquired the Japanese DVD before the American one was even released brought it over to my bestie's for one of her annual New Years parties which of course to my bestie's liking allowed no other option but subs.
So I've seen the film but I've never viewed the dub and never will.

YES!! Finally I'm not the only one. His voice changed so dramatically that he seemed like a completely different character.

For me it all depends on the show. For some I like both, for others I prefer one over the other. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Inuyasha, and Full Metal Alchemist, for example, all have pretty talented voice actors that I think fit the characters really well, so I prefer them over the Japanese cast since I became familiar with the dub before the sub version. Then there are other shows that were clearly cast without taking as much care about matching the voice actors to appropriate characters so I like the Japanese sub version more.

I can read subs pretty quickly so it's not really inconvenient for me one way or the other, although sometimes it can be a pain if it's a very dialogue heavy show (such as Legend of the Galactic Heroes - each episode is like a philosophy lecture).

And now I'm pretty comfortable with Japanese that I often watch it in Japanese with Japanese subs instead of English. Having the words on the screen helps when I don't recognize something or a character is speaking quickly, but I usually can understand through listening alone. So I've started doing the reverse by watching English movies dubbed into Japanese.

I really like watching Disney movies in both languages since the characters and stories have nuanced differences to appeal to their audiences. Usually the voices are similar to the English ones, but not always. And occasionally I like them better dubbed in Japanese than the original!

Yeah, that's interesting too. I've been sharing Game of Thrones with my fiance and he watches it in English with Japanese subs since his English isn't very good. I like to observe the differences between the phrasing in the subtitles compared to the spoken lines. A lot of the time the nuance and jokes are lost, unfortunately. But sometimes I really like the rephrasing the subtitlers come up with.

Sub. Because then I can learn titbits of other languages too :D

I know I had tried to watch the English version a long time ago and it has been ages since I tried to watch it again. If I recall, Yuki had a high pitched voice in one of them? I can't recall. I'll have to look it up later.

It's funny that you mention Full Metal Alchemist because over the weekend I met Vic who is the voice actor for Edward Elric (and Tamaki from Ouran <3). When I get home I'll have to share a video of him during a panel at the convention singing 'Do You Want to Build a Human'. It was sad. The voice actor though, he's so lovable and excited. As soon as we picked at Tamaki that's who we got to deal with XD I would love to meet him again.

I've met Vic before too, actually. He used to visit even the small cons in Seattle area back when I lived there. There's a picture of me and my friends making silly face in a picture with him out there somwhere but I never got a copy of it.

I haven't been into anime for a long time though. I want to watch some of the famous ones that I've heard good things about someday but I never seem to have the time. Not quite the same, but I recently watched a live-action movie based on a manga called "Thermae Romae" about a Roman dude in charge of designing bath houses who gets transported through time into modern Japan and starts copying what people do in Japanese hot springs. Hilarity ensues.

I grew up watching dubs, and late in high school, a friend introduced me to Subs... and I haven't gone back... much. There are some things that I prefer watching the dubs of, like Ouran High School Host Club, and others, like Rosario + Vampire, that I prefer the subs of. I feel that I get a lot more culture out of the subs. If I'm doing homework, I prefer the dubs because I don't have the time to focus on reading subtitles. If I can actually focus on reading the subtitles, then subs it is. (Dubs also tend to be funnier, in my opinion, especially the American dubs.)

I actually really like both.

I grew up watching subbed foreign films with my mom and I've always been a quick reader, so keeping up with the subtitles has never been a problem for me. When I started watching anime in high school, I didn't have a lot of resources, so I watched whatever I could get my hands on, which included a lot of fan-subs (which are their own whole category.)

I have some anime on DVD with both subs and dubs, and I've done some comparison watching. What I found was that each version emphasized different subtleties. Jokes were presented differently, some things are present in one version but not the other, and so on. Because of that, I found that I got a richer understanding of the show from watching both versions.

I'm not as obsessive about anime as I used to be, so even though I have greater access now, I still watch whichever version comes my way. If I really like a show though, I'll track down the other version and watch both.

Subbed. Subbed is pretty good for the most part. I don't mind reading the subtitles because I get to hear characters in their original voices which can make a difference when it comes to an anime. Dubs typically have some odd castings which ruin the characters for me. Really ruins them. There's very few animes that actually benefit from a dub anywho.

I usually prefer dubbed so that I can appreciate the art rather than spend the entire show reading. ^^;
