I think if I lived in the US, I would probably watch it too. but in the UK our soaps are about regular, everyday lives. the characters could be your next-door neighbour, your boss, work colleague, trash man, or your doctor. its alot easier to relate to characters with the same problems in life as one that you yourself may come across in your own experiences. that being said, I watch Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and Holyoaks. occasionally I watch the Australian soaps, Neighbours or Home & Away. but mainly because they're so unreal that its burst out laughing hilarious. I rarely ever watch America soaps, which are usually about the rich and famous, not real to life people. but when I do, I don't mind to watch, no, that's a lie. I only watch the comedies, oh, and the crime dramas. Sunset Beach, MelrosePlace and Bold and the Beautiful just don't float my proverbial boat. .
