Hm? is your mom a bad cook? There are certain foods I won't eat unless my mother makes them.
Hummy, someone's selling me Comfy Corner for 4k.

My mom is the WORST cook ever.
She used to make mashed potatoes with water and she never added salt. So it was lumpy, chunky and bland.
Then she cooked chili dogs one time, they were the nastiest thing I ever tasted. I have no clue what she did, she probably cooked the meat in ketchup and added some onions. Anyway, I told her it was good because I didn't want to hurt her feelings and tell her it was nasty. So she made EXTRA one day and I had to eat ALL of my serving and I honestly couldn't stomach it. So I sat at the table and stared at it for hours and my mom asked why I wasn't eating it and I cried and was like, "Mom..... IT SUCKS IT TASTES SO NASTY EVERY TIME I TAKE A BITE I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING TO THROW UP"
And she wasn't offended, but she was disappointed that I didn't tell the truth.

I love when I get a few chunks in my mashed potatoes. That's one food nobody makes like momma. Nobody. Anywhere else I see mashed potatoes—school lunch, packaged at the grocery, at a restaurant—the visual texture is comparable to an eroding canyon. The surface is rough and also has a dusting of dark speckles. That's one of my red flags with food. If a food is speckly, I don't want to eat that food.
When momma makes mashed potatoes… the visual texture is like rolling hills. The surface is nice and smooth, and there are no speckles. She does use salt and I think butter. The taste? SO GOOD.

Yes. I got some bad indigestion later on.
I LOVE Mom's food! Ava, I would have offered to eat your chili dogs, I LOVE ground beef cooked with ketchup, and with onion! I don't know why you don't like it, it's so GOOD! Mom makes two sets of meatloaf, both sets cooked with ketchup, one batch without onion for Dad (he's allergic), and one batch with onion for the rest of us.

Pretty sure that's pepper. I like pepper in my potatoes. Gives it a little kick.
@Connie - That sucks. It's the worst when you go out to eat somewhere and the food is awful. So disappointing.

My mom is an average to bad cook.
I've solved that problem by recipe hunting for variations on what we have had or to try what we haven't made at home.
Stuff that is just so much better.

One of my cousins went through a phase where she didn't like hot dogs, or something like that. So she would just put ketchup on hot dog bun and eat that. They were referred to in my family as invisible hot dogs.

My niece did that the other day, but with hamburgers. Her kiddie plate had two little hamburgers on little buns. She just slapped some ketchup on each of the top buns and put them together and had a little ketchup sandwich. Despite demanding a hamburger for lunch, she only ate the pickle and a few bites of the buns. No fries, no burger. I mean, she's three, so what can you do? Hanging out with her reminds me of why I don't need more tiny unreasonable people in my life. I already have my grandmother.

I got lucky? Mom is a good cook, and I'm double lucky because my boyfriend is a great cook.
Dad would never be able to survive on his own. One night when I was around 13/14 years, that he made dinner to give Mom a rest. He put pasta, baked beans, hot dogs, and pre-steamed veggies into a pot for some beef stew-type thing.
But he didn't know that you're supposed to boil the pasta before.
And by now he's probably totally forgotten it again.

Ew! Pepper on your mashed potatoes?
Momma's family line's mommas have always been good cooks. They do it by not measuring anything.

Mine followed in-law lines.. Mom's mother wasn't much of a cook, but Dad's mother was a great cook, and a great baker too. I gather her mother wasn't much of one, but her mother-in-law was.

My Mom is a good cook, my mother in-law was a good cook, her food was a little spicy for me, but still her food was good.
The step mother in-law seems to be a weird cook the few times I have had her food.
She likes to put jelly in stuff that doesn't need it, at one of the family gatherings she had either put grape jelly in baked beans or in the little smokies (sausages) or maybe it was in both.

Right now I'm desperately trying to hoard up copies of everyone's recipes. I've requested Mom show me how she makes one dish or another. But we still haven't gotten around to it. Dad's sister makes THE. BEST. Macaroni casserole I've ever had. But she doesn't go by recipe, just tosses stuff in there.

Pepper and potatoes are a classic pairing.
@Damia - Well, on packages of frozen meatballs, they have a recipe for cocktail meatballs that involves grape jelly. I've never tried it. x_x Sounds scary.
Most of our family recipes are just family guidelines. You just sort of pick them up as you cook together.
