It was the con's first year. It's the East Coast offshoot of YaoiCon. So it was 18+, no kiddies. That was nice. I'm all for kids being enthusiastic about anime, but sometimes, you want a less hectic con. I think it has a good mix between anime enthusiasm and adult fun. Plus, people can still be enthusiastic and nerdy and hyper about their favorite things. I hope it gets a second year, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. The hotel it was in was rather expensive, and we're not really a big state with a big city destination like Boston or New York. So I feel like if they have another they might want to move it, but Boston and NYC already have a glut of conventions. So who knows.

I ended up with a bunch of days off to take care of my grandmother now that we finally got her back from the hospital. It's been an ordeal. Bleh. Cookie Mom is coming back up to help out though, so that's a plus.

@Ava - I live in a very tiny state with not much exciting going on, and then bam! We had Bishounencon. So, stuff can sneak up and surprise you sometimes.

*runs in* I HEARD CONVENTIONS MENTIONED.

also, hey! -- one of my (unofficially adopted) sisters is from RI! (because I looked up Bishounencon out of curiosity)

also also, I so want to make it to Otakon this year; the Anisong World Matsuri sounds like it's going to be freaking AMAZING.

Hey Onsen. Yep, I dragged my cousin to the very first BishounenCon. And a good time was had by all. It was a novel experience having a fairly big con happen down the road. If there was nothing we wanted to see, we could go home, or head out to eat. But I also think that makes it easier to not hang out with all your fellow geeks, cause you have the option of hopping in the car and heading home.

One of these years I'll get out to Otakon. This year is probably not the year.

I know that feeling about having a con literally down the road; I went to a first-year con a few weeks back, and it was just a bus ride away. I think I might do this one again if I decide not to go to Katsucon next year...

Oh, and Otakon is within the realm of possibility if I can swing it. I just have to get some space in a hotel room, is all...

If this con comes back, I'll go again for sure. But I'm wondering if it did well since there was a rate reduction and also, this location is just kind of odd. It's within easy reach of Boston and NYC, but still a bit odd.

*whines* Take me with you Onsen! Even though I'll probably be broke. *sighs* Need a new job.

Would that I could; I'm planning on cashing in vacation and other stuff in order to be able to get hotel and bus tickets and spending money and whatnot.

You guys are soooo lucky!

I live out in nowhere, so we don't have conventions that are close by. :s
We have a party at my local comic book store for Free Comic Book Day and then we have a comicon in the city that is pretty active, but at the same time, it's not that fun as the ones in Los Angeles because you literally show up and see everything there within an hour.

Just in the general area of where I live, there are at least two anime cons, two comic cons, not to mention various one-day cons.

We have a Comic Con here too, Rhode Island Comic Con. I've just never gone. I feel like I'm not into comics or other general geekery enough to attend Comic Con. One of my favorite parts of cons is anime specific panels and anime merch in the dealer's room. I might not find a general Comic Con too fun. I only went to once, to New York Comic Con, and that was only because my favorite mangaka was a guest and doing a panel and book signing. And it's lucky that I did because she ended up having to cancel her Yaoi-Con appearance that year, but I still was able to meet her and get books signed.

Anyway, even though some of these things are close, I don't always attend. Sometimes you just have to try to make your own fun wherever you are. I like doing small geeky things with other friends. But I will say that it is definitely worth saving up to make a big con trip now and then. It's loads of fun, but it's definitely a splurge. And you should pick one in an area where you might also like to visit the area. For instance, Yaoi-Con is in San Francisco, and I have friends there, so after the con was over, I stayed at their place and explored the city. Same for New York, my friend lives there and I took a few extra days to have her drag me around the city.

I'm such a huge comic geek.
I am more of a fan of DC comics, but as far as the Cinematic Universe is concerned, it's obvious that Marvel kicks DC's ass. :s

I collect comic books, though. I started collecting manga when I was really young, but I've always loved comic books. My parents used to give me those little four page "Christian" comic books and I loved reading them. (Well, reading the pictures because I was too little to read) But now that I look back at them, those little, religious comic books were traumatizing. The one I had was about a child who was beaten almost to death by an alcoholic father and the child was thrown out of the house in the rain, then the child crawled into the street where they froze to death. :| (The only good thing was that the child went to heaven......... )

Anyway!! Onto more happier things, I started collecting DC comics when I was 16. I couldn't stop since! I haven't been as active in my searches as I used to, but I still love cosplaying which is why I attend comic cons these days. I love showing off my work and I love collecting books as they come to me. My favorites to collect are the Tales of the New Teen Titans series and I'm currently trying to collect all of Robin: Year One. I have the entire series of Teen Titans: Year One, but I really want Robin: Year One. I'm a big fan of Dick Grayson! I especially loved him as Robin, but Nightwing is pretty cool too.

There are absolutely no comic cons where I live, but I live in a small city. I think only 20K people here. It's an hour drive into town to get to any comic cons... And even those are really small and not that exciting. There aren't any panels or any big stars there. Though there are some cool animators and smaller celebrities there sometimes. It's mostly independent comic book artists and such.

Oh man, Chick tracts! Those things are awful. Why would they give such a traumatizing thing to a child?! D: D: D: I was also scarred by Christian media as a child. We were at a festival and there was this bus where they were offering free snowballs if you got on the bus and watched the film. For some reason, my parents let me and my younger brother go on alone. I guess they figured they'd get a quick break from us and we couldn't get into trouble. Anyway, the plot of this film is burned into my mind. There was a father who raised the train bridges along the tracks. One day, the kid goes to see his father, and this involves him walking along the tracks to get to the bridge. On this particular day, something goes wrong with the bridge and the tracks don't connect quite right and a train is coming. So the father has to go use a crowbar or something to keep the tracks aligned so the train doesn't crash. But as the train is approaching, he sees his son walking onto the bridge. He realizes that he must hold down that thing so he doesn't kill the people on the train, and in doing so, he is sacrificing his son. I don't think they showed the kid getting hit by the train, it was implied, by like his hat floating down the river or something and the father crying. But holy shit, I am traumatized. To the point where, I don't even remember if I got my damn snowball. My mind just drifts back to this damn movie now and then and thinks about how contrived it was. I feel like the kid could have moved to the side of the bridge or jumped into the river or any number of things to not die. Hell, his father probably told him a million times not to walk across the bridge. But you know, none of that stuff would have gone along with the message of sacrifice for the greater good and all that.

And now on to comics! I used to be a big Marvel Comic fan when I was a kid. My mom started buying just some random comic books for my younger brother, but I ended up getting my grubby paws on them and fell in love with X-Men and began collecting X-titles with my babysitting money from the local drug store in the mall. And then Generation X came out and heck yes. I watched the X-Men cartoon and then other Marvel cartoons like Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. At some point, we moved to Scotland, but they had a really big comic book shop in the city center, so I continued to collect. Ironically, it was going to college that made me stop. I didn't have a car and I lived on campus, and there was no comic book access for me. There were a few shops in town, but only accessible by car. It was around then that I really started getting more into anime and fanfiction. Now anime and manga pretty much own my life. I don't watch or read much else. The occasional web comic or random youtube channel, but that's about it.

So yeah, Marvel was my jam. Loved the X-Men. Hated all the movies, except X-Men: First Class. That one was lovely, but then all the rest of them sucked. The Marvel Cinematic universe is much better. But I've just never gotten back into reading comics. Even though I've done it before, it seems intimidating. Even though I jumped into some pretty heavy arcs midway through when I was young. I like going at things from the beginning. Problem is with a lot of these ongoing series, there is no "beginning". Although, I've heard of a lot of stuff shaking things up. People dying, new teams forming. I dunno, one day, maybe I'll jump back in. But for now, I'm content with anime and manga and whatever else catches my attention. :)

I don't get it.. What is with these "Christians" writing these traumatizing stories and putting them out there in the public for people to see?! I mean, that's not going to make people convert. When you shove creepiness and death down their throats they are NOT going to be like, "Hey, that sounds like a nice life."

That is so interesting! I've never read the Marvel comics, but I have seen a few of the X-Men movies. I wasn't too interested in them except for when they added Quicksilver. That was the only character I cared about. Then I saw Logan recently and I learned that I actually don't mind Wolverine either. Although, it wasn't enough to make me want to watch any of those movies... That is really cool, though, Cookie! I have always loved Teen Titans, which is what I mostly collect, but I got started with watching the Teen Titans TV show on Cartoon Network. That was what really got me into superheroes.

I definitely think the Marvel Cinematic is much much better. I feel that their movies have been the best so far as far as being most relatable(?) and better character development. I guess Warner Bros. just isn't understanding how Disney is doing it! :s I think if DC spent more time trying to develop their characters and spent time on utilizing their lesser known or less popular characters, then they'd make a killing. But instead, they try to mimic Marvel or at least they try to redo Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight series and it just falls flat.

I think they're trying to sell us their religion using heaven as the ultimate goal to achieve and hell as the threat of punishment should you fail. Like, live your life as we say you should live it and then it won't matter if you die, because you go to Disneyland heaven! But if you don't live your life like we think you should live it, ULTIMATE SUFFERING AWAITS YOU AND YOU'LL BURN IN HELL LIKE YOU DESERVE TO NONBELIEVER!!!!!! *coughs* But yeah, I think that's part of it, for sure. And who better to scare into worshiping your god than impressionable young people with small, cheap, easy to read awful comics!

I cannot understate my overall disappointment in the X-Men movie franchise. While some of the casting choices were decent, like Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellan, and Hugh Jackman, others were bad. I just don't care for Halle Berry's storm. In the comics, Storm was this statuesque beauty who was mistaken for a goddess. But she was also a badass who used to rock a mohawk. I didn't feel like Halle Berry embodied any of the qualities I liked about Storm. The best I can say for her is her characterization was better than the abhorrent X-Men anime they made a while back where Storm was weak because she was a woman. *vomits* The only reason that I like X-Men First Class is because it was basically a serendipitous accident. Like, Fox needed to hurry up and churn out a movie to keep the rights to X-Men and got a random director and threw the movie together and it just worked. I liked the cast, the story was interesting. But then they brought back Bryan Singer for the sequels and I went back to hating on X-Men movies again.

I feel like part of the problem with DC and movies is that they're still on the whole GRIMDARK train. Like, Batman must be angsty and edgy. Colors must be muted and dull. They even managed to make Superman's blue and red outfit, less bright and colorful. I gave up on Batman movies after the Dark Knight. It was ok, but meh. I did watch Suicide Squad. It had its moments, but still, even with Harley Quin and her colorful hair, the movie was still pretty dark. And meanwhile, Marvel is making a movie about a sentient tree and talking space raccoons. Heck yeah! I think DC getting away from the whole GRIMDARK thing would instantly give their movies a bit of a boost. They also need to stop rebooting Batman and Superman over and over and over. You have a whole stable of other characters guys! Stop with the reboots, just stop. No more Superman and Batman movies for at least a decade ok!

Ok, I'm done ranting now.

@Onsen - I mean, compared to the original, anything is hilarious right? Stupid Chick tracts.

TBH, I'd rather have grimdark Batman than 1960's Adam West Batman(although, it wasn't THAT bed... just incredibly goofy).

Also, if they ever do Bane again, Danny Trejo should be him. Because eff yeah Machete.

I feel like the Batman cartoon captured Batman without smashing you in the face with Batman's trauma constantly. It was on the dark side, but not all "I'm so gritty and grim!" Besides, there's something inherently cheesy about most superhero stories, you just have to balance out the goofy with the rest.

I agree with that, I couldn't quite pinpoint why I didn't like the DCCU as much as MCU, but when you said that, that was exactly it. They try to go for "dark" and it ruins the vibe and the lovableness of the characters. I like to collect Batman and Robin comics and there was one where someone gives Batman a baby and he actually takes care of it... Like, *THAT'S* the Batman I know, someone who just wants to help out in any way he can to avoid anyone losing their family like he did... Not some moody, grim, creepy shadow of the night. :s

I liked the Adam West Batman, but maybe because it was pleasantly silly and a nice break from the seriousness of the more later Batmans....?
I thought that Keaton was the best Batman.

That makes sense... Still, I don't see how they believe that shoving their agendas in people's faces with traumatizing stories is going to make anyone want to become a Christian. :s When I went to Stan Lee's comic con last year there were these people standing there talking about people going to hell for whatever reason. I'm like, "The fuck?! This is a fucking comic con! LIKE. WHO'S GOING TO HELL FOR COSPLAY AND BUYING SOME COMICS?!"

Have you seen Logan yet? I am not a huge fan of Wolverine but when I saw Logan I said to myself, "Wow, Hugh Jackman definitely made Wolverine!" and Sir Patrick Stewart, perfect. I am a fan of Michael Fassbender, but I felt like he was an okay Magneto. I felt the same way about James MacCavoy's portrayal of Charles Xavier. I mean, they were both okay. I can see why the movies would be disappointing to you. :( I haven't really watched many of the X-Men movies, so I haven't seen Halle Berry's portrayal of Storm.

@Ava - I haven't seen Logan yet. I might see it. I've heard good things about it, even though every past Wolverine movie has been a terrible trainwreck.

@Onsen - Sadly, I don't think we'll get mutants in the MCU because Fox still owns the rights to X-Men movies and "mutants" which is why the other Marvel shows are doing meta-humans or whatever and they were gonna do an Inhumans show, because Inhumans are set to take the place of mutants? Something I read on some comic blog but didn't fully digest.

@Kirin - It was called BishounenCon. Hopefully, they'll do it again next year, but you never know with those first year cons. It could have been a total bust.
