Movies aren't just about "accuracy". They are also about revenue.

It's the same reason why most movies feature white actors instead of others who are POC or more qualified because movies are all about revenue. Let's face it, Emma Watson sells. I was hoping that they'd use Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Belle when I first learned she was going to be in the movie, not only is she a more qualified singer, but it would have been an excellent opportunity to have a BLACK princess.

And they've done that before, using "other" Asians to play parts that are not the same as their ethnicity. Just the fact that they use Asian actors at all would be amazing, I don't think there would be an uproar over characters not being Chinese. If you've seen Black Panther, he is not African, yeah, they could have found an actual African guy to play Black Panther, but they chose someone that they liked and felt would be a good portrayal. (And also someone who has been known to sell out movies.)

I get that, but the point of the remake was to remake the original Beauty and the Beast. So therefore, it's got the same audience in mind. Children. Also, it includes those who loved the original and grew up with the original. I believe if Disney had changed it too much, they would have been met with more on an "uprooar" than doing what they had done already.

I am black, and I don't believe Princess and the Frog was racist. I do, however, want to see another black princess.

It's always surprising to me when white people try to tell black people what is and isn't racist.... :/

I adored Princess and the Frog. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. I just wish they would make a movie with Elaina of Avalor.

That's a TV show, right, Kirin?
I haven't seen it, :o

I just wish Disney would do more ethnic princesses.

Ava, totally understand where you are coming from with regards to wanting Disney to use more ethnic diversity in their princess selection, they are the pioneer for so many things that if they were to set an example others would follow in their wake.

With regards to Beauty and the Beast, it's set in pre-revolution France...where the majority of people were of the lighter skin persuasion. Yes, they could have shaken it up and chosen to break with the original story by selecting a different female lead.

And not all movies are about revenue. Most indy films are not about revenue, but about the message of the movie, or the flexibility to do the movie the way the director or actor or writer wanted the movie to be shown. My favorite example of this would be Boondock Saints. Total indy film with limited budgeting and it became a cult classic. Kind of want to watch it now.

It would just be so awesome to see more ethnic princesses. They got a bit of a start with Moana, but I feel like with Moana, perhaps Disney was trying a little too hard to find a "super ethnic" princess that she became a little hard to relate to for me. I thought Moana was great, definitely, but it was definitely hard to relate to her as a character, imho.

Yeah, that would have been so awesome! When I first read that Gugu-Mbatha Raw was going to be in Beauty and the Beast, I thought she was going to play Belle and I got so excited. I couldn't believe that we were going to have a black Belle, but I guess it was just too soon for the world to have another black princess.... :/

Oh, I love indie films! My favorite one is definitely Only Lovers Left Alive, either that, or Beasts of the Southern Wild. I love how indie films break against the traditional big-time, Hollywood feel and create more refreshing movies about feelings and less about action sequences. Don't get me wrong, I love some action sequences too! But I am getting to the point where I love seeing movies that delve into deeper social issues that most Hollywood movies don't really get into.

You do know that Nick Fury from the Avengers was actually a white man, but when they started writing the scripts they wrote him as an ethnic gentleman because they wanted Samuel L. Jackson to play the part.

Boondock Saints wasn't all action, it deals with other cerebral issues, at least I thought so.

You are asking people to buck with tradition. Traditionally the stories they are telling are from a time period when there were not a lot of ethnic individuals in power, or common place among society. And for as open minded as people can be, tradition is something that is hard to break.

On a "do I like the character" level, I don't give a flying rat's arse whether they're black or white or green or blue or purple or glow-in-the-dark-rave-vomit. If I like the character, I like the character, don't matter their ethnicity.

Taiyo, and there is that. Color of a person's skin or sexual orientation was something we were raised to be oblivious of. You either like someone for who they are, or you don't.

Me personally, can't stand Nicholas Cage. His acting is abysmal!

I don't think I've seen a lot of Cage's stuff :/

Though...it would be nice to see more non-white leads in fantasy films. Especially because I'm a sucker for the fantasy genre >>;

Taiyo, in my humble opinion, you aren't missing much by not seeing any of his films. My friend Jennie would disagree, but we won't listen to her spout her love for him. Such a weirdo.

Yes, more diversity is definitely needed, not arguing that at all.

So long as the diversity isn't at the expense of good characters. I've read many a book and watched many a movie with a black or hispanic main character who only exists because "diversity~", rather than how they portray a character....

Meanwhile when it comes to character creation for my writing projects, I usually don't know their ethnicity till like...it's the last thing characters usually tell me. Most of the time, anyway. Same with sexual orientation.... *looks at a certain half-elf dude*

Taiyo, that's because there are somethings that just don't factor into a character's, well character.

And you are right, but there are also times when a character would have been better if they had used someone else that just so happened to be ethnically diversified.

My boss has left for the day and I am sitting here on Menewsha and watching a movie on Netflix for the last half hour of my day.
Guess I should get the deposit done before quitting time.

Ava, he is a meme, like hardcore out there. Many people are not a fan of his acting, not just me that has a loathing for his under developed acting skill.

If you ever get the chance, check out YouTube and put in Nicholas Cage's agent. You'll thank me later. It's a skit done by college humor, totally worth the watch.

College Humor has some of the best stuff ever. Then again, there is so much material for them to draw on in this day and age.

They pretty much cover everyone of his movies in that skit. You really aren't missing much by not seeing any of his movies. Trust me.

This time of year is our slower time and my boss is fine with me doing whatever as long as my work is done. And my work is always done before I start messing around.

Trying to figure out what we are going to do this weekend. Water park? Or sit in a training thing for the VFW? Choices choices.

Excuse me but I should've been more specific...First I would like to say I am AFRICAN AMERICAN AND FRENCH. So I wonder what you meant about that comment of "It's always surprising to me when white people try to tell black People what is and isn't racist..."
and I'm French (Creole) So Having Family from Louisiana...YEAH I'ma say the movie is racist. My reason is I didn't like that she had to work hard labor to be successful in owning her own business while having a wealthy Caucasian friend who was completely selfish and did nothing mostly except wana stay rich. Falls in love with a BROKE prince and she had to be a frog. Don't forget she needs animal friends so why not have her friends be uneducated bayou critters with crooked teeth.
The movie is unjust and like I said before she should've been a Legit African Princess who has a background of royalty in the first place.
