I've heard every term possible to put down someone that like/loves/obsesses over Japan. From Japanophile to otaku. They are ALL negative. I mean I'll admit some people that claim to love Japan do over exaggerate and don't know much about the real culture, but really what is so wrong?
I mean we don't call Japanese people obsessed with our culture such negative, heartless things. We infact love when people like our culture. I feel that people who use these rude terms are close-minded and aren't diverse and cultured.
Why do you think people act this way?

I, for one, love Japan. I would love to go there for a vacation. :3

I have never heard of this happening, but if it is true, it should be stopped. I didn't know "Otaku" was a negative term though. I have even referred to myself as an otaku. ^^" I do agree that such discrimination should not happen at all. Whether or not you like another culture shouldn't matter.

Well because (no offense to proud americans) america sucks. And so does the UK since the people here are soft little unadulterated sissies. (For a quick example, the game 'Condemned' was stripped heavily of a lot of the features that made it a good game but were considered too violent blah blah blah by our government. The tards.)

I would LOVE to go to Japan myself. I also like lots of Japanese stuff like anime, manga, and their music <333
I guess one reason people discriminate the Japanese and Japan is because of all the terrible things that Japanese soldiers did during WW2. They really did VERY bad things, my grandma would tell me stories ><
If anyone has read that book 'The Rape of Nanking' you would know how bad the Japanese can be. Some people just haven't been able to forgive the Japanese even after all these years!

@Minuxe: That may be true, but Americans have done terrible things as well. Perhaps more terrible things since they are still occurring today. And in war, every country does horrible things.

Well I was exposed to it a lot on Gaia. And yeah if you were to look up Otaku in the urban dictionary all the definitions are negative. There's all kinds of stuff it means like "A word used to define a nerd (only a lot more harsh)" and something about a murderer in Japan that raped and killed little girls because he was obsessed with Loli-chan (Basically naughty pictures of little girls) I won't go in much depth with that though because of the TOS >_<

@Willow: Yup, every nationality has done really bad things. It is just odd at how people can't seem to forgive others. The thing is that what the Japanese people did is publicized more than what the Americans did.

@Toxic: I cried when I read that. But despite that I still love Japan. Other countries do the same to animals. Like Canada and the seals. There's nothing we can do to stop it if they believe it's culture. Even if it's something I'd really like to stop. I love dolphins and seals so... it's heartbreaking. But humans being cruel and heartless towards animals will never end no matter how angry we get with them.

- I think it's because it seems a bit shallow for someone to like the culture just for the popular stuff but have no idea what's REALLY going on in the culture.
Kinda like liking someone for their beauty instead of who they really are deep down inside. :O
And it DOES get on my nerves when people that love cosplay and love manga think that Japan is JUST that and it happens everywhere you go or something. And that's the only reason they want to go to Japan. I've been there and yes Harajuku, Tokyo, manga and all that stuff is a part of them, but they're more than that. And it's pretty stereotypical of some people to think of Japan just as a country that produces good electronics and an exciting lifestyle.
Personally I think Japan deserves more than that. It has one of the most unique histories however they have tons of societal problems. :/

I'm learning Japanese now, I have japanese friends, and I'm planning to study abroad there in spring 2009; so yea, for some unknown reason I have this incredible wish that I was born there. I think of otaku and japanophile as positive terms and I embrace them as I admit I am obsessed with Japan and I don't care who knows. 'Otaku' roughly translates to 'obsessed' or 'obsessive' anyways :3
EDIT:
wish: I don't think just because someone likes anime they should be labeled narrow minded? If these people need to learn about the true culture of Japan, what is better than going to it in person? When I go to Japan I want to learn whatever I can, and I don't want to be labeled as ignorant simply because I don't have any Japanese friends to show me around or tell me how things are. Stereotypes occur everyday in every society, and we all have past experiences that will shape our judgements of others. To me that post sounds offensive and judgemental towards non-Japanese otaku. It sounds like you think I can't enjoy anime and still want to learn about the culture beyond it. I get a little offended when people think I am dumb because I like anime. xD

@Minuxe: I don't think it would be. Why would American media want American citizens to know about the bad things America does? It's not propaganda, there's another word for it, but I don't remember what it is. Oh. Yellow Journalism. I think. ^^"
@Toxic: That is very sad. I couldn't watch the whole thing.. But please remember that those people don't represent the entire country.
@snuffy: o_o I will never say otaku again.

I have to say...I have used derogatory words such as "Japanophile" and "weaboo," and meant them. I DO have issues with people who are "obsessed with Japan" but don't know a THING about it, or those who only know the positives about it and are then led to think it has NO FLAWS WHATSOEVER, or those who think it's this magical land of nothing but anime and lolitas...
...because they make people like me look bad. :x
Yes, I have a bit of a fascination with Japanese culture. And there are things about it that I love, and things that I find absolutely detestable.
Just like with any other country.
Why this one fascinates me more than most, I have no clue. It just does.
But of course...I am relatively SANE in this. I DO like anime, manga, and Japanese music. I DON'T have the delusion that entertainment is 100% of what Japan is about. I DO think the language is beautiful. I DON'T borrow words from it and throw them into my sentences (unless I'm trying to memorize a vocabulary word with FRIENDS who are ALSO working at it, or the word does not exist in English). And for the love of Agate, yes, I am QUITE obsessed with Gackt...but unlike many of his other American fans I have met, I know perfectly well that the odds I'll end up married to him are worse than the odds that I'll get bitten by a shark, struck by lightning, and hit by a car all on the same day AND SURVIVE. XD;
And you know what else? I HAVE considered moving there one day. Definitely NOT because of a cultural fascination, though...but because of the field I hope to work in. Biomedical engineering. From what I've seen...I might be more useful in that field there than here.
But, like I said...unlike SOME people I've seen, I know where to draw the line between fascination and unhealthy (and annoying) obsession. If I think it's starting to reach that, I will not hesitate to put down the Japanese language learning guides and pick up the German, or maybe put on some classic American cartoons.

@Sapphyre: I'm studying Japanese too. I was so happy when I found out they offered it at my school. So now I'm kinda making rough plans for after high school to make a trip over there for a few weeks. :]
And the otaku thing I've heard a way different term of it. Much more in depth of where the term came from. I'm not too proud to be called an otaku, but I love being called a Japanophile. 8D

I agree it irritates me when people know nothing about Japan other then what is highlighted, and know nothing of the negatives that Japan (and every other country) has. I'm only proud of being called a Japanophile because well, sometimes I act like one when I find new music and what not. :] I do enjoy my own culture most... being good old American. 8D
