I wrote this story for a school vocab assignment a while back and have since gone craaazy with the sequels for it. It's so long now >_>

As a warning, there's a part at the end that's quite gory and is very descriptive about it. If you don't like that sort of thing, I advise you don't read the story.

OUTBREAK

Some say it started in a terrorist bio-lab, but that is not the truth. It started in the confidential rooms of the Capitol building, where crooked politicians and their financial backers would scheme into the wee hours of the morning. Here, greed and short-sightedness in their simplest forms would start the cogs of an unseen Apocalyptic horror.

Sylex Mobile Bio-laboratory. Time: 19:07 Location: Unknown.

In the grey zone between levels 3 and 4, Lara Eckels and Jim Mathus bathed in a chemical disinfectant shower. They were nearing the last task of the day- obtaining blood and flesh samples from infected test animals.

As Lara dried off and stepped into scrubs, she had to remind herself not to rush. Level 4 contained high risk pathogens, most with no cure. Lethal agents such as Crimean-Congo, Marburg, and an incurable strain of Malaria are often found in the hot labs classified as Level 4.

A slight mistake could lead to a 3 week quarantine to avoid transmitting infection to others around you. In cases of definite infection, 7 to 10 cases suffered a terrible death.

Luckily, Lara thought to herself, mistakes like that rarely happened. She taped the wrist opening of her gloves to the sleeve of her scrubs, all the while looking for any tears or holes.

She stepped into her Tyvek space suit and taped an extra pair of gloves to the sleeves. Jim helped her get her helmet on, then put on his own and fastened on the special motorized HEPA filter, looking for any holes in the thick plastic tubing.

“Are you ready?” he asked her, after she finished.

She nodded, and they both turned on their filters. The sound of said devices drowned out most outside noise, and the suits and helmet often made one feel quite isolated or claustrophobic. The combination of these usually unnerves people more than the hot agents themselves.

As Lara waited for her helmet’s glass visor to un-fog, her mind wandered. She remembered back to the time she had accompanied a new worker into Level 4 for the first time.

His name was Bill, and he was a bit of an exhibitionist. Most of the time, he had played up a calm, cool, ‘no fear’ attitude. When the door to Level 4 opened, and his helmet fogged up, he felt anxious and claustrophobic.

After a few minutes, he couldn’t take it anymore, and ripped off his helmet whilst taking great gulps of air. Needless to say, he was whisked off to quarantine, where he stayed for 3 weeks straight. Since then, Lara had learned to observe behaviors better, as to prevent such a thing from happening again.

Lara was shaken from her thoughts by the sharp hissing sound of the hydraulic door opening. She took a quick breath, then followed Jim into Level 4.

Sylex International Headquarters. Location: Geneva

In a conference room on the fifth floor, two well dressed men shook hands for the first time and introduced themselves.

“Ahh…we finally meet in person,” one remarked, “Do you have my money?”

The other one nodded, glancing down at a briefcase shackled to his own wrist.

“Yes, I do. Do you have my virus?” he asked, with a slight undertone of some strange emotion which the other man could not identify.

“Er…I’m afraid not, Mr. Rittevon. It’s in the final stages of development, and it will be ready for deployment soon. In the meantime, I’ll just…” he reached for Mr. Rittevon’s briefcase.

“Oh, no no,” Mr. Rittevon said, moving away with a little smile, “It doesn’t work that way, Mr. Zurich, my good man. No virus, no payment.”

Mr. Zurich gritted his teeth and looked away. Mr. Rittevon put a hand under Mr. Zurich’s chin, propping his head up, with that same little smile.

“Patience,” he whispered, sliding his hand down a little, to tighten Mr. Zurich’s tie, “It’ll be worth your while.” With that, Mr. Rittevon turned and left.

Slyex Mobile Bio-Laboratory. Time: 19:46 Location: Unknown.

Lara worked quickly, lacerating various test animals and extracting what she needed in a separate room from the main laboratory, as regulations required autopsies of test animals to be done where the live subjects could not see them.

She was skilled with the scalpel, cutting efficiently and carefully. As she slit the belly of a monkey who had been given a new strain of something which she wasn’t exactly sure of, she noticed that the spleen was a strange color and shape.

She poked it with the blunt end of her scalpel and frowned. The monkey’s spleen was the size of a baseball and nearly as hard.

She cut it out and brought it over to Jim, who was injecting mice with a substance she did not recognize.

Lara frowned, watching him for a second. He turned and looked at her hand, eyes wide. She nodded, trying to hand him the abnormal organ for analysis.

Jim shook his head, and pointed to her glove. Lara looked down and cried out. There was an inch long laceration through both her inner and outer gloves.

‘It must have happened while I was switching scalpel positions,’ she thought.

Heart racing, she looked closer, and saw that her skin had been pierced as well. The infected monkey blood had leaked through the tear and mixed in with her blood.

The last thing she remembered was her knees weakening and her head cracking against the ground.

-THIS IS THE GORY PART YOU MIGHT WANT TO SKIP-

Sylex Mobile Bio-laboratory : Two weeks later.

Lara woke up in quarantine, with a splitting headache and several IVs sticking into her. The pain in her head was so great that she cried out. She tried to put her hands to her head, but she found that both her arms and her legs were strapped down. She screamed for about thirty seconds until a voice came over a speaker system.

“Lara? It’s Jim. I’m glad you’re awake, I was getting really worried. How do you feel?”

Lara was quiet for second.

“Horrible. How long have I been in here?” she asked, a little bit frantic.

“Two weeks. Good news, though, it looks like the Ebola you were working with didn’t get into your bloodstream. You look a bit anemic, though. You’ll be in here a while longer until we’ve got you back to normal, okay?”

Lara tried to nod, but couldn’t. In the corner of her peripheral vision, she could see Jim standing in front of the thick bullet-proof glass window, which was bolted in place.

“Jim? I’m so glad you’re he-“ suddenly, Lara’s body jerked and thrashed violently, biting through her tongue. The severed half fell to the back of her throat, and she coughed it out along with a quarter-cup of blood.

Jim watched in horror as she thrashed again, snapping her restraints and sending a slick of blood across the room.

Her body jerked off the table, and she landed on the floor, cracking her skull on the floor. An uncontrollable chewing urge began, and she started gnawing at her lips.

Her eyes were wild and frantic, like a trapped animal. She ripped at her hair, as blood flowed freely from her nose, ears, mouth and anus.

Her teeth continued the chewing motion, biting off her lips. She swallowed them, and started on her cheeks.

As Jim watched her writhe and bleed on the floor, he felt like vomiting, especially when Lara emptied her own stomach of it’s contents which had turned horrid shades of purple and red.

Lara managed to get to her feet, hospital gown soaked in vomit. Blood continued to flow as she chewed off chunks of her cheeks and swallowed them, her body flung to the side and her head cracked against the thick glass window, less than a foot from where Jim stood.

A few colleagues gathered, watching Lara’s death dance in awe and horror through the window now splattered with her blood. As she leaned against the window, blood oozing from her mouth, Jim saw what had looked like an orange and purple flame-like pattern within her normally bright blue iris.

Lara thrashed again, falling back and hitting her head against the floor. The impact threw her into another seizure. Her jaw snapped shut, shattering many of her teeth.

Frightened onlookers watched as her spine slowly began to curve up towards the ceiling. Lara’s body lifted up, balancing on her head and heels. As her abdomen stretched towards the ceiling, the inner lining of her intestine sloughed off and exited her body, along with copious amounts of blood.

This experience is said to be extremely painful, but young Lara showed no signs of feeling it at all.

Her eyes remained wild, her pupils dilated almost to where no color could be seen. Her spine continued to arch, beyond what seemed possible in a human being.

Jim had to turn away, tears in his eyes. The sound of Lara’s spine snapping was audible even through the thick glass window.

Even though Lara had died, her muscled remained rigid, holding her body in it’s eerily unnatural crescent shape.

In the reflection of the window, Jim noticed a slight orange pattern around his pupils. He turned, and vomited.

Sylex International Headquarters: Two days later

Mr. Zurich reclined in his chair, reading over the latest Eon8 report. He smiled to himself, thinking.

“Perfect,” he said aloud, turning his chair around to gaze out the window at the beautiful Swedish landscape.
Suddenly, a hand touched his shoulder, and he flinched a little.

“Mr. Rittevon?! I didn’t see you come in,” he said, regaining his composure quickly.

Mr. Rittevon smiled slightly, and looked away.

“I presume our Eon8 is ready for deployment?” he asked softly, tilting his head a little bit, to look over at Mr. Zurich, who shifted in his seat.

“Yes, the last phase of testing is complete. You can read the write-up on the results of the human subject, if you’d like,” he replied, pushing the papers over towards Mr. Rittevon, who shook his head and sat down in the chair opposite Mr. Zurich.

“No, no. I haven’t the mind for all that scientific mumbo-jumbo. Why don’t you explain it to me in layman’s terms,” he said, leaning over the desk a little, putting his elbows on the desk and resting his head in his hands.

“Well, I...uh…that might take a while. It’s quite the complicated little organism,” Mr. Zurich replied, feeling a bit uncomfortable under Mr. Rittevon’s gaze.

Mr. Rittevon just smiled demurely.

“Oh, I have all the time in the world.”

On April 12th, 2013, the deadly pathogen known as Eon8 was deployed in select areas of New York City, Beijing, London, Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires.

Two to three weeks later, the first symptoms showed, and a violently painful death followed in 9 out of 10 cases.

The highly contagious recombinant agent Eon8 contains proteins of tuberculosis, meningitis, the Mayinga strain of Ebola Zaire, Lesch-Nyhan, smallpox, (which was eradicated during the late seventies) AIDS, and many others.

No cure was released for many weeks, and a full fledged epidemic had spread. The indigenous peoples of Australia, Africa, and North America seemed particularly resistant, but infected individuals who survived the disease were left with Lesch-Nyhan or AIDS for the remainder of their lives.

Certain government agencies such as USAMRIID and the CDC were manipulated by Sylex not to release an antidote and vaccinations until months had passed after Sylex had come out with their high-priced immunity shots.

They and others profited immensely from the fear of the public for a little while.

However, no one had been able to foresee the true effectiveness of Agent Eon8. It lashed out of control, overwhelming a third of the population in half a year. Military personnel and public health doctors alike struggled to contain it. A year and a half after the initial deployment of the deadly virus, humanity had finally managed to slow it’s rapid spreading.

Shortly thereafter, the Eon8 virus disappeared.

No more new cases were found, even people who had come in direct contact with infected persons or substances did not contract the disease.

Eon8 seemed to have vanished entirely. Humanity was
safe, for now, to rebuild it’s wasted cities and resume it’s humble duties without fear of the invisible tyrant.

The raging wildfire that was Eon8 had been reduced to the tiniest flicker of light.

Yet, that flicker remained.

At an unknown location, in an abandoned room stained with blood, fear, and disuse, a rotted corpse lays, belonging to a person whose name has been long forgotten.

In this facility, Eon8 remains.

Patiently, it waits, living perhaps in the few chunks of remaining body tissue, or in the moist, unchanged air filters, who are a home to many other organisms.

We might never know.

It waits, silent and invisible, for it’s next opportunity to rage out once more and wreak havoc on the delicate framework of the human race.

It waits for it’s next chance; it’s next outbreak.

THE END
