I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen it. It's an extremely good psychological/horror/drama type anime. Doesn't seem like many people know it, but on the sites I have checked, it has gotten extremely high ratings all around. Here is a quick plot summary from Anime News Network.

Quote:
Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be... Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Personally, I don't think this description justifies how good it is. By no means this is like Naruto or Bleach with a ton of action. But the plot is definately the strong point of this.

Discuss:

Have you heard of Monster before?
If so, were you interested?
Have you seen it?
Did you like it?
From the rough description i've given, would you want to go look this up?

Oh, wow.

I once saw the first episode on an anime sampler disc that came with my (coughrippedoffcough) series of Fullmetal Alchemist, and I must say that I liked that one episode more than the series I bought it for. :P

I haven't really been able to find it anywhere, though I -have- been looking.

It is really interesting, though.

Morrreee, moooreee... I want more of it. ♥

I have not been able to find any American stores selling it, but if you look at a few of the specialty Japanese stores, you might find it. Really hard to find. Frankly, I illegally torrented it (sorry to the company in Japan that put it on TV ^^;; ) since there was no other way for me to find it. But it is really interesting. The first episode just sets up a lot of other really interesting psychological and philosophical dillemnas. :3

I know that it is out in manga form in the US seeing as my idea to buy it for the public library was shot down at the manga buying club thing since we already had it. Even so, it's hard to find.

Edit:
News Article pertaining to Releases of Monster
English subs avalible in Singapore markets, but not in North American ones yet.

Manga started to be released on 2006-02-21 in the US. I just remembered seeing it on the shelves of a Barnes and Noble just a few weeks ago. So you can look at bookstores and see how it comes out. ^^

I saw the previews for it... My husband watched the series but I never got into it... It just wasn't my kind of series...

Kerry: It's kinda shonen, but I don't think i'd completely classify it as that. More the misc semi-supernatural, semi-horror, more psychological type. Like Ergo Proxy if you've seen that. :3

Manga: I get what you mean. It's definately not for everyone.

I saw the first seven episodes of Monster during the school year before last - 2005 I think. It appeared to be a great show and has definitely been on my list of anime to get my hands on. Based on the description I'm not so sure I would have watched it, but I was definitely hooked after seeing it. I just hope that this year when I'm co-president of the anime club I'll be able to show off a great selection of anime too.

  • I doubt you want to show all 74 episodes of Monster at the club though since that would be a tad crazy. Don't think I can show more than two or three at my club, but it does depend on who is there this year. I can likely get away with it with Exel as president, but if Mel takes the seat next year, then I won't be able to share it. D<

Haha, no, you're right. Sharing all 74 episodes would be an awful idea. We typically don't show the whole anime anyway. We can show about 2 episodes per meeting and meet every other week (because the school administrators don't like the idea of an anime club, gah). We try and show a couple of episodes of more 'arcane' anime until people get tired of it, then we're open to suggestions. I'm actually de-facto Co-president because last year's VP had incredible sporadic attendance. Ehe.

Then for your sake I hope there's no Mel? XD

Monster is probably one of the best anime I've ever watched. It's probably the only anime I've seen that actually comes close to being literature - the way it examines the dark side of human nature is an achievement of animation.
