Chapter 2 - Part 2
At first I couldn't understand why Kristen had latched onto me the way she did, but I was grateful for it. It had been five years since Martha passed on, five years since Jake last brought his family to see me, and oh how I missed the sound of laughter. When the doorbell rang, I almost didn't answer it, I was so enthralled by Kristens anecdote, but answer it I did. I was a little surprised to find Kristens father stood on my doorstep asking me if I'd seen his daughter. Of course I told him that she was sat on my living room floor and invited him in. Leaving the two of them alone, I went and made Mr Waters a cup of tea. Well when I came back, Kristen said goodbye and with a bright smile left. I must have commented on what a sweet girl she was as I handed Mr Waters his Tea, because that's when he began apologizing for her. He told me that they ad lived next door to his parents before and that Kristen was used to just dropping by after school, what with them being busy with work, and now the new baby.
Well of course, I told him that I didn't mind her company, in fact I rather enjoyed it, and before I knew it, we were chatting away like we'd known each other our entire lives. He told me about his family and I told him about mine. Before he left I'd been invited over for dinner the next night and Kristen had permission to visit me whenever she liked. A permission she took great advantage of. Pretty soon her daily visits had become the highlight of my day. The dinner with her parents went so well that it became a weekly event.
Although I find it hard to believe, even now, the Waters family had a hard time making friends here. They felt as though they just didn't fit in with the town. I couldn't imagine why, they were as nice a family as I have ever met. I am proud to say that we became firm friends in those first few weeks. As summer rolled around we had virtually become family.
