- So, I'm taking a Vector class at the community college, and Illustrator and I have a love/hate relationship.
Any tips/tricks/advice for use/etc.?

Vector is a kind of computer art.
Adobe Illustrator is a vector programming. Vectors use math - my guess owuld be vector calculus and linear algebra - to create shapes and colors on-screen and all. For example, you place a point A at (43, 84) on the paper and then connect it to point (75,90). You select a brush option, and it draws a line that's thicker by point A than by point B. (Mind you the actual program is much more intutiive than taht, you can just drag your mouse across the screen, and it will appear).
Programs such as Photoshop, Painter, etc. are raster programs where each pixel holds a color value, and when you draw on the screen, the pixel color value changes and that's how you see things.
Suffice to say, vector files take up a lot less space than raster ones since they're all code. Also, again since it's all math, thier is zero worry about resolution loss because, no matter how large the file is made, the points are calculated relatively. So, if you zoom in on a vector line, it's always crisp - versus zooming in on a pixel line which turns jagged.
As for tips... the pen tool is your friend. Bezier curves, in my opinion, offer the best combination of control and freedom in terms of the possible shapes one can use in vector art.

I'm a Computer Science major specializing in digital graphics - I have to know this stuff, lol!
I have to be able to DO the aforementioned linear algebra by the time I graduate.
In 3-D, too. DX! (Maya, the program I work with, is a vector program - only 3-D, not 2-D like illustrator (although illustrator does have some e-D looking effects tools). The whole size-difference with vector and raster can be seen so obviously in Maya. Like, if you use the shaders they provide that are basically just algorithms, the program runs smooth as pie. But, like, as soon as you import your own hand-drawn texture map.... o dear. I mean, oh dear.)

Ah ... i tried vectoring for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty interesting ... but i prefer other types of art, ones in which i can ... do more traces.

- Thanks for the heavy encouragement on using the pen tool. I've grown to really love it for making the lines, but using the paintbrush for color adding 'cause I fail at remembering to make whole shapes so the auto-fill kinda screws things up. xD;
&&I think you probably are the only one that likes math. At least the harder stuff. I <3 elementary crap. xDD

Lol, I only eer used auto-fill. *sweat*
I'm taking physics with calc next semester (lol, this is the second time around.. guh, wish I got a 5 on the AP! so close! so close!), and Calculus III (IV in most schools, but ine's super strict) in the spring of next year. I think I'm gonna do probability stat instead of CAlc IV when I'm a junior.

I took the illustrator class here on campus to get the Desktop Publishing Certificate to go along with my General Associates degree.
It's a very good program for making logos and projects that will have to be resized a lot.

i love vector omggggggg
vectorvectorvectorvector
it's a shame that so many people don't take full advantage of it, you mostly see photo tracing and that is pretty lame imo.
i use macromedia flash to draw (i am anti-pen tool, yuck). everything i know i have sort of learned it on my own. the only time i ever used a pen tool was when i'd do vector drawings in freehand. i remember spending 6 hours drawing a passion fruit from life. NEVER AGAIN, I SAY!!!!
i started a vector tutorial and never finished it, so that information isn't of much help to you :/
but here is the first part if you'd like to try using another program: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36544563/
i just read the illustrator cs2 bible a couple of days ago and it is super thorough and incredibly informative. i'd recommend that baby to anyone learning to use the program.

Do you mind READING a couple posts before before you ask this question? There's a full definition just a few posts above you.

Ah, Vectoring. Very fun, but oh so frustrating. All I can say, is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. You need to fool around with Illustrator a lot in order to figure out how it works. That's about all I can say. xD

- Vectoring is love ! :3
Magaly; Photo tracing is lame and cheap, unless you want people to know you did it from a photo. The only reason I've ever traced a photo is when: I wanted the rest of the photo in the picture, but just her face vectored, and when I did my deviantID, because the picture was wayyyy too pixel-ly :3 See? XD;
But, I'm not good at vectoring realism. My people always come out looking like African tribal masks, and I like it that way :]

Vectoring and I have never gotten along well whenever I've attempted it, either. So, not much to say except best of luck. Love the style, hate the time and effort/frustration you have to go through to get it right. x_x;

i like math :o guess which is why i am an electrical engineer @ [email protected];;
My first intro to computer graphics was with Vector Art (CorelDRAW)... also took some intro to Illustrator/Photoshop classes next. Vector art really ish lots of fun but too time consuming for me now @ [email protected];;

To all who are performing vector art, especially with Adobe programs, one should know that the Shift, Ctrl, and Alt buttons are your friends.

I love to vector, but I don't think I am that good at it. *sweatdrop* At least in human terms. I did a lot of logo work and layout in illustrator for years and it has only been in the past year or so that I have started to dip into vector work. But with practice it becomes a very fun and rewarding form of art.

Stay organized. Keep different shapes of the same element in their own layer group so you can select (and thus, change) them easier.
