Shiko gazed from beneath her hood with resentment, the drizzling rain already making this hard enough as it was, but with the wind that just dumped the rain within her hood, it was almost impossible to form a stable portal. Grumbling, she reached into her shaman's bag and took out a wing shaped blade and a block of aitra powder, shaving some of the dirty blue dust off of the block with careful strokes so they fell on the ground, and did not gather on her clothing.
Damn, the prince anyway, she thought for a moment, her anger at being forced out on this windwhipped plain in the middle of the winter rainy season, making her expression grimmer than before. Why doesn't he do this himself, if the brat is that important? Jaidev knows he has enough power for a summoning!
Sighing, Shiko shook herself off once more and started the summoning once more, making the aitra powder glow dimly before her.
"Paylisade comori daitri." Shiko whispered gently, as the plain around her dipped into night and the elaborate patterns of aitra suddenly burst into bright blue flame that didn't burn, nor did it give off heat.
Which would have been nice right about now.
:It ready yet?: A voice in Shiko's mind said, weary and just as disgruntled as she was.
Shiko tolerantly smirked, and looked down to her feet where her familiar sat, soaked and looking rather pissy about having to sit in the rain, and rather bored at having to wait through three repeations of a rather complicated spell because of the same weather.
"Oh, is his royal prissiness getting impatient waiting to go to the human world? Does the Eytheryl's no longer hold your fasination?" Shiko couldn't resist the rib, but 'Thiele just sniffed with distain, and the feline creature picked itself up and trotted to the area were the fire patterns came together at the center.
:Is it ready?: 'Thiele repeated, his tail flickering back and forth as Shiko gathered her supplied that she had gotten out.
"Ya, have a nice trip."
The familiar just sniffed once more with distain, and pawed at the blue flames, turning his nose up at the picture clearly shown through the heart of the portal flame. For a moment, Shiko was afraid that the contrary creature would refuse to travel, but just as she was gathering her power to force her will, 'Thiele stepped through with, :Yes, I believe I will.:
"Ah! Stupid Kaia'rene! Think they're better than everyone!" Shiko growled as the flames disperced. "Bah!"

kiriko gazed through the crowds of children at the brightly painted, newly built elementry school with a feeling of wrongness. She felt like if she tried to head through those doors, her homemade bento meal would change into a box filled with licorice, cauliflower, and root beer, her three most hated foods. Looking backwards at her mother, who was directly behind her, her eyes pleaded while she pouted.
"Momma, do I really have to? My old school will be lonely with out any kids to take care of it!"
Sighing, her mother squatted down beside her and looke up to the school as well. Her mother was in her business like attire, ready to go to a meeting, and she was held back by Kiriko and this new private school. Pulling the wrinkles out of Kiriko's school uniforn, she spoke in her tired voice, filled with iritation.
"I've told you before, your old school burned to the ground and there is no school left for you and the other children. Now your father paid a lot of good money for this elementry school, so I want you to make him proud and get in there. I have a meeting with the stockholders that I'm late in getting to, and I need you to get in there, so scoot."
Scowling as her mother gave her a gentle shove in the direction of the school, she walked a few steps into the crowd, but then turned around to run back to her mother, who had already gotten into her black SUV and was speeding away, hurrying to her precious meeting.
To her stockholders, whatever they were, Kiriko thought, turning back to gaze balefully at the school that made her feel twitchy inside. It was to be her first day in second grade, in this new school that she knew nothing about, even though it had the same students and teachers as the last school she had attended that had, as her mother had said, burnt to the ground.
Finally giving up on pouting and deciding to make the best of it, she scanned the crowd for anyone she knew and her eyes fell on the one person who could make her day much better, almost instantly. Ryuushi, her best friend since kindergarden was the biggest and the strongest second grader this year, looking almost like a fourth grader, even though he was only nine years old.
He also was the only other Japanese-American student in the entire school, besides for Kiriko, even though he had the blond hair of his American father, or so he said.
And besides for being the only two Japanese-Americans, they were also the the source of endless trouble for the teachers of their private school, and a source of mystery and confusion, not to mention heaps of frustration with things they couldn't explain. Things just happened around these two that couldn't be explained, like when Kiriko would have temper tantrums and things around the room would hover two inches above the ground, for example, in one memorable occasion, every bottle of tempura paint in the classroom not only hovered above their specified location on the art table, but burst in midair, splattering every child nearby with bright watery paint that was almost impossible to get off the white uniform tops.
And Ryuushi was almost as bad if not worse, for no one except the parties involved were ever there to witness what he did, like the time that he had been harassed by playground bullies, and then later, when recess had ended, when the children could not be found for afternoon classes, they were found waist deep in the sand of the sandbox, wailing and struggling to get free. They had claimed that one moment they were standing on the sand, and the next, they were buried in it.
But these things only happened when the two were separated from one another, and as they were unseparatable, the teachers sighed in relief when they had both assigned as a couple to their class, because even with the strange occurances about them, the two students were excellent and willing pupils. As long as one had the other.
"Ryuu-kun! Ryuu-kun!" Kiriko cried, as she fought her way through the crowds of children making their way to the building.
Ryuushi, she could tell, had heard her, but couldn't see her as she was the shortest member of their school, for even some of the kindergardeners topped her for height. Some of the teachers called her "positively doll-like," with her lack of stature and her delicate, waif-like frame. She only came to an average three or four year old's height, and quite easily could be lost in a crowd.
But what she lacked in height, she made up for in pure waif-like beauty, with long raven's wing black hair that cascaded to her waist, thick and as fine as silk, and pure crystaline green eyes in a pale skinned face. Her eyes were slanted and wide, and there was no mistaking her as an Oriental.
She pushed her way through the crowd and jumped on her best friend, startling the tall, slim second grader, smiling up at the face that warmed as he saw who was at his waist. Ryuushi never warmed easily to the other children and he was seen as a bit of a loner by the teachers, who were fairly worried with the large student's tacturn nature, and his lack of friends in his peer group. That was until he befriended Kiriko, who also had a lack of friends, but not because she didn't desire them, but because the rest of the children were frankly afraid of her and the things that happened when the waif's fast flaring temper took over.
"Hey, Kiri!" Ryuushi whispered, taking her by the hand and leading her toward the door of the school, his height giving him an advantage in the crowds, as the mass of kids seemed to make room for Ryuushi to pass through. "We're need to hurry! We're gonna be late for class!"

Kal'en'thiele stared balefully on the playground before him and the snot nosed children with all of their noise and chaos and sniffed in disgust. He had no idea why he had bothered coming here, especially since his stay on Earth had been everything but luxurious. On Arialle, he would have accorded silken pillows, handmaidens to care for his grooming, and fine dining fit for the familiar of the Guardian of the North, a powerful shamanic mage.
Here on Earth it was a totally different scene. He had scrape for his dinner and beg food from the children he had watched for days now, sleeping up in a tree with all of its hard knots and rough bark. All this to wait for the damned Prince that was to be his contact here.
If that brat didn't better his conditions as soon as 'Thiele found him, there would be hell to pay.
Settling his position once more, his paws folded before him, his illusion covered wings relaxed over each side of the branch he laid on, he swept narrowed eyes over the playground once more, trying to find his contact.
Damn Shiko anyway, he thought, catching his eye finally on the child he had been waiting for. Standing up on his branch he stretched out his mind voice to the child-like Prince.
:Your Majesty,: he called out, catching the eyes of the Prince, :I am Lord Familiar Kal'en'thiele of the Kaia'rene. I come by Guardianess Shiko's powers to inform you that She is required. Now. And if you don't mind, I'd like proper lodgings for the night.:
The Prince stopped his converstion with the absolutely beautiful child next to him, and looked directly up into the tree with a expression of shock in his face, with the corresponding mindvoice to match his expression when he responded.
:'Thiele? They sent you? Now? Why now?:
~*~
Ryuushi was in the middle of another tale of Princess Aeleonna of the West, walking around the playground, pretending it was one of his gardens at home when 'Thiele's voice had interrupted his conversation. The shock that regestered in his mind was true enough, colored slightly by a mild panic at the state of Arialle if they had sent the cross tempered Kaia'rene to gather him and his ward nine years ahead of schedule.
Not that he would mind finally being able to rid himself of his disguise of being a child and going to school when he was well past his childhood, according to his species's standards. To wash the stink of these humans off his skin and breathe in fresh Ariallian morning air.
"Ryuu-kun, what happened then?"
The musical voice of Kiriko interrupted his thoughts, pulling him back to the matter at hand. His face sobered for a second, thinking of a way to get away from Kiriko for a moment to speak with 'Thiele. Then his face suddenly brightened and he turned to Kiriko, clasping her tiny hands and stooping a moment to look in her eyes.
"I can't remember the rest of the story, but I want to play hide-and-go-seek. You're it!" He said, deftly tagging her and running away while Kiriko giggled and turned around to count to twenty.
Ducking away, he cloaked himself with illusion drawn from the power of the earth and ran to the forest, heading for a little clearing he knew was in the area. He could feel 'Thiele chasing him, and he slowed to a walk as he came upon the small sun bathed clearing.
Turning about he saw the large winged feline-like creature touch down, it's rusty coloring brightened to a molten copper in the lazy light in the clearing. He was an odd looking creature with a sinuous feline body with a fox-like head, huge tufted ears, a knob of a tail, and huge feathered wings that sprouted out of his back. He was roughly the size of a medium sized dog, and about five times stronger. A Kaia'rene that chose to lead a life as a familiar to a shaman. His golden eys glittered with intelligence and amusement as Ryuushi's Arialle-hungered eyes took him in.
"So what has happened?
The Kaia'rene sighed and lowered himself down onto the mossy carpet of the forest and looked around for a moment before answering.
:No one really knows what happened, but the Council has released that her Majesty, Princess Aeleonna, has disappeared, there has been a resurgance of Euri'hrin in the East and the North. Prince Caillen is currently sitting in wardenship over both the West and East Princedoms, with the old warden, Princess Aerafiele also missing. And some say that he is looking to displace all three of the missing Princesses in the order of the Throne of Starfire. He's looking to become High Prince.:
Ryuushi sighed and began to pace, thinking deeply of the impications of this. Prince Caillen was well known for his roving eyes, but he also was the only other person available for wardenship that he knew about, especially if both Aeleonna and her twin, Aerafiele, had disappeared, without a trace. It didn't help that Caillen was his younger brother and had always resented being the third son of a Princedom, with no possibility of coming to power without the deaths of Ryuushi, the oldest, and the second son, Jaidev, who was almost impossible to get to the last time Ryuushi checked, as Jaidev had mired himself in the monastaries as a novice monk.
"So does Jaidev know any of this or is he still not quite there, and on his damned quest for spiritual enlightenment?" Ryuushi said, whipping around to face 'Thiele.
:Actually, when you left to find Her, he came out of his hole and became warden in the South. He is an amazing politian. Very calming. So, yes, he does know what is happening with your brother, but he is too hasled by the nobility to do anything about it.:
The Kaia'rene had been sitting, but suddenly got up and stretched out, pops in the long spine clearly audible as he stretched like the feline he resembled.
"So when is the portal open? Is it going to be one of Shiko's?"
'Thiele gazed at him coldly for a second and began to groom himself, as if he was pondering whether or not he wished to give his information for free. That was until a tree branch came down and plucked a feather from his wing and he was on his feet in an instant, hissing at the tree, then turning on Ryuushi who was hiding a smile behind his hand.
:That hurt.:
"Well maybe next time you'll be faster in answering."
The baleful stare continued until 'Thiele returned to his grooming careful to answer just has his broad tongue came to his fur.
: Do you even have Her yet?:
Ryuushi had just opened his mouth to answer when Kiriko appeared, trapsing through the woods, singing, "I found you, Ryuu-kun! Found y-"
Interrupting her song, 'Thiele pounced, knocking the tiny girl over, hissing, angery that their cover had been blown by a mere human. The child's crystalline green eyes revealed panic, and fear, but there was also courage, as she fought under the Kaia'rene to get free. And when she couldn't get free, there was rage in her eyes, with no trace of fear.
'Thiele barely heard Ryuushi's scream, when he felt himself lifted off of his victim with an intensely powerful mental force, and he was thrownacross the clearing, away from the tiny girl, hitting a tree on the other side.
Dazed, he picked himself up painfully, and looked over to the area where he once was with disbelief, and he saw Ryuushi picking up the black haired child up tenderly, bringing her into the clearing, whispering calming words to the young girl. Ryuushi then looked up from the young girl and turned a frosty glance over on 'Thiele.
"'Thiele, let's try this again. Welcome Princess Kiriko with the respect she deserves."

The clearing was dead silent for a good minute before Kiriko started whimpering and turned her head into Ryuushi's shoulder, hiding from the feline-like creature before them. Ryuushii was still staring coldly upon the Kaia'rene, angered to end by the familiar's actions. He should know better by now. Hasn't he been a diplomat for years?
'Thiele on the other hand was in a panic, staring at the child in Ryuushi's arms. I could be killed for what I just did! What would have happened if I hadn't attacked with my claws sheathed? He thought, his hair on end, his body tensed. The bruises under his fur were starting form from the hard contact with the tree behind him.
Suddenly, Kiriko's whimpering stopped and shepeered up at the face of her holder, her eyes wide with some newly discovered fact and she spoke in a breathless whisper.
"Princess Kiriko? Why'd you call me that, Ryuu-kun?"
Ryuushi's cold black eyes suddenly warmed and he quickly turned his slanted eyes on his cargo, smiling tenderly, as if this was his child in his hands. He carefully set her down and brushed the leaves out of Kiriko's hair, kneeling down, since Kiriko was literally half his height. 'Thiele could see that even the famously cold-hearted Prince was warmed by this absolutely beautiful, yet tiny little girl. Who, for some reason, had the shape of an Eytheral is ShadowSight.
"Well, let me tell you another story of Princess Aeleonna and the four Princedoms of Arialle." Ryuushi said, reclining on the grass, visibly losing his child-like demeanor, and acting his actual age.
"When Aeleonna was twenty-three, the Euri'hrin, a group of Shadow Creatures that have haunted Aeleonna's people for hundreds of years, managed to free themselves of the seals that had been cast on their kind and invaded from the East, which was under the rule of the very wise Mental Mage, Princess Yuriko. Normally, under attack from Euri'hrin, Yuriko would be able to hold them back, but this time, she had just finished giving birth to her daughter, a young Eytheral by the name of Kiriko-"
"That's me!" Kiriko interrupted, excited at being a part of one of Ryuushi's wonderful stories.
"Yes, that is you. But to continue, since she had just given birth, Yuriko's powers had been weakened momentarily, and the Euri'hrin had nothing that could stop them, so in swarms they attacked. But as they came closer, Yuriko sent out a call to Aeleonna and her twin, Aerafiele. She begged for help, and pleaded, but unfortunately the rest of the Princedoms were under attack as well in a very well planned out attack from the Euri'hrin.
"So, your mother, in order to protect you, called upon an oath that Shiko, the Guardianess of the North, had made to her over three hundred years ago. They had made an oath to always come to the aid of one another in times of exteme distress. And so Shiko came, and helped your mother to gift you with your mother's entire potiential for magic, besides for your own, which was formidable from birth, and had Shiko steal you away to the Central City.
"But as Shiko readied herself to flee, your mother remaining behind, weakened to a bare shade of her former self, Yuriko extracted another oath from Shiko to create a portal for you the moment Central was threatened by Euri'hrin."
'Thiele, having been there, interrupted with a public mode of MindTalk, making Kiriko jump, but she was entralled none the less. For a moment, Kiriko reminded him of one of his own cubs back on Arialle, before they were full-grown of course and creating woeful chaos within the Princedoms.
:With that oath made, Shiko fled, running as if the wind itself had made a road for her, speeding her along on her journey to the Central City, better known as Aerilis. But on the way to the city, for they had used dark sorceries of their own, the Euri'hrin had caught up with her, riding bare minutes behind her, coming closer and closer. So Shiko, taking the oath of Yuriko to heart, created a portal in seconds and tossed you through, and then threw herself in afterwards, tying up the portal as she jumped in.:
:But since she had made a portal with no set location, as that happens with quickly made portals, she landed in a separate world entirely from you, while you landed here on Earth. When she finally got back to Arialle after a year jumping between worlds to find her way home, with me along for the ride, since I had jumped in with her, she found that Aeleonna had managed to seal the Euri'hrin away again, but this time we knew it wasn't going to permanent because the seal on the Princedoms depends on the combined magics of four Princes or Princesses and the High Prince. And Yuriko had perished directly after Shiko had fled from the castle. And without her heir, there was a pillar missing in the seal.:
:And so we searched through worlds and worlds until we found your aura on the human world our people knew so well, Earth. So we sent Ryuushi in after you, since he was the only person we knew of that had ever been to Earth before and actually knew the main tongue.:
Ryuushi grinned at the expression of absolute wonder on Kiriko's face and thanked the gods that she was being told this when she was young and would be willing to believe such an unbelievable story by Earth's terms. Which were to say, fairly shallow.
"And so I searched high and low for you for four years, until I found that you had been adopted by a Japanese woman who believed that you were Oriental as well. I managed to spell up a mother for myself and a household and took signed myself into your school, setting myself up for the long run, since we decided to keep you here, safe, for the next several years."
Kiriko listened to this entire story with a look of awe and delight on her face, but suddenly her face fell as she picked up something from what Ryuushi did not say.
"Am I going to have to leave Mommy now, Ryuu-kun?" Kiriko said with a slight whine in her voice."
That question took Ryuushi by surprise and he choked on the question for a couple of moments before 'Thiele broke in with the saving explaination, that would still upset the young girl, but wouldn't put her completely off and take away her cooperation in going back to her native domain.
:Yes, but your mommy isn't your true mommy and you have cousins and playmates who will love you in Arialle. There are many noble children your age that will want to play with you, and many of those same children have magic and will teach you how to use yours properly.:
Ryuushi gazed over at the Kaia’rene sharply, amazed at the tender tone to the Kaia’rene’s mind voice, knowing full well, that a Kaia’rene could not lie, even though they could neglect to mention something, and that they could not falsify emotions when speaking in MindTalk. The Kaia’rene were known to be very emotional and caring animals for the most part, but Ryuushi had known ‘Thiele since he was a child and the Kaia’rene had always been nothing but sarcastic and ill-tempered to anyone who knew him, excepting, of course, his MindMate, Guardianess Shiko.
Kiriko skeptically peered at the fox-feline and snorted, making herself look older than she really was. She had never had people who really wanted to play with her, unless they had been told to, and in her experience, that meant that the children playing with her would tend to be mean and cruel and their “play” was a form of teasing that went deeper than the normal playground babble.
Ryuushi caught this look and immediately broke in.
”These children are just like you, and if they were here, they would probably be teased too, so they will love to have your friendship and understanding, Kiri dear.”
:How did she figure out that she was going to be taken away from Earth?: Ryuushi thoughtspoke, more for his benefit than 'Thiele's.
:Well however she figured it out, she's a quick one. We'll have to go slowly with her.:
"Yes, that we will," Ryuushi said aloud, getting up and guiding his two companions deeper into the forest, to his home. At the moment, he didn't care if the humans worried about them.
All that ever crossed his mind was that the Euri'hrin had escaped from their bonds once more.
