A girl came down the hill with a tray of potted flowers and a scoop and watering can. She came to two small shrubs that were neatly trimmed that stood on either sides of a large rock. She smiled and got to her knees and began scooping holes for the purple and white pansies she had bought with her allowance. She filled the holes with water and then took the flowers out of their plastic containers and planted them gently into the holes covering them with fresh soil. The May sun beat down on her head, the burned scalp showing through her thick blonde hair. She started talking, though there was no one around. She took the fertilzer and sprinkled it onto the plants.
"I'm finally 16," she said while watering the plants smiling. "Mom and dad had a party for me a few days ago for my friends. A small get together. Since today is my actual birthday we had the family over." She trimmed the small shrubs with the clippers she had in her back pocket of her capris. "I wore that white sundress that you bought me from when I was 13. I'm amazed that i still fit in it. Everyone said I looked great in it. I usually hate wearing dresses, but I like that one." She started tying pink ribbons around the branches of the shrubs continuing to talk. "Matt, Alex, and Alyssa say hello. We've gotten closer since Christmas. Though of course we had to lose something in order to get there...." She paused looking around the area she was working in. "Matt's ok, he didn't get hurt in that massacre at Virginia Tech. He's home for the summer now. And Ally and Alyssa are doing fine in school." She sighed and started pulling weeds from around the plants and stone. "I was hoping you'd make it to my sweet 16. I really wanted to dance with you...You are my hero after all. It wouldn't be right if I didn't dance with you....in that white sundress you loved." She looked at the stone and dusted it off. A grim look appeared on her face as she stared down at the blank polished stone. "I guess I can tell you what I wished for when I blew the candles out..." she spoke softly as the tears rolled down her dirt-stained face. " i just wanted you to see me, dancing with dad in my white sundress...." She wiped her face smudging the dirt marks. She cried in front of the stone placing a picture of her when she was little sitting on the lap of an elderly woman. Both with smiles embracing each other. "I miss you grandma...." With that, the girl stood and took her supplies back to her car, pulling out of the parking lot of the church.

(( In loving memory of my grandmother ))
