I had to buy all my stuff from Newegg.com, the majority of parts I wanted weren't available from Newegg.ca

I hope things get better for you Rad. I have never heard of that site. I checked it out now and I see that it is a lot like tigerdirect.

I can only hope right now, still waiting on thermal paste to arrive so I can test the CPU/Fan/Motherboard, to make sure damage isn't there, and in the case of the fan, that the damage it took isn't serious enough to warrant replacing.
$60 fan, they probably wouldn't accept it for the insurance claim, since if it still starts and runs, whether or not it makes a lot of noise, or isn't at it's most efficient probably wouldn't matter to them.

Ugh it sounds like building your own computer is not worth it in the long run.

I will stick with my store boughten one that I have a lot left to pay for and hope things work out better for you. I will eventually buy a cheap laptop as a back up computer.

I've built all my own computers, and have been lucky enough never to have a part come in damaged, >.<;

Computers can suck sometimes. Sometime last month after the 10th, my CD/DVD drive just disappeared. Like, literally. It's not even in Device Manager and I can't run any CDs anymore. My only solution is to buy an external drive.
How does one build one's own computer? Seriously? I wanna know.

Yeah, the friend that helped me, he's only ever had one other instance where something was damaged, but with me, it was one after another problems occurring and then when it finally arrives, it took some hefty damage. :/

Ugh, that is bad luck. How much have you guys invested in building your computers?

*thinks*... This particular computer, based on when the parts were bought, was over $1000. But if you were to buy it as it is now, it'd be a lot cheaper.

You can build a computer for cheaper if you really need, it just depends on what you want/need.
Personally for me, I wanted a better gaming computer, plus something that would work exceptionally well for work without having to spent a shit load on it.

If I had that many problems I would seriously give up because that is just the way I am. I am cursed it seems. That is only $500 more than my store bought laptop surprisingly. I honestly thought you had paid more than that.

Paying for parts online and putting it together yourself is a lot cheaper than buying a store bought preassembled one.
Plus more effective in most cases.

I checked out building one myself in a different brand and I was way past the amount of this one and it still did not have all of the features of this one. I know some one who could have helped me. I do not know where to get the parts and stuff so he probably could have pointed me to a cheaper route. My other computer was just being too difficult to continue looking for a cheaper route. I fell in love with this computer the moment I saw the ad.

But it also requires knowledge and technical know-how, which most people don't have in the case of literally building a computer. I'm so jealous of you guys who do know what you're doing!

That's why I got my friend to build it for me, and I'd learn to do it myself later when I have the kinda money to spend on learning. <.<
Also Angelina, I don't know what you mean by that.
Sounds like you're going through some manufacturer's "custom build"
Not what I meant by custom building though.
I mean buying parts individually from newegg and putting it together manually and installing all the firmware and drivers and operating systems.
Which is another thing that dings the price of computers, Windows. :V

Yeah I know Rad what you meant. I edited my last post some since I realized I was talking about something totally different. I just do not have the knowledge needed to build a computer. I can never fully work the one I have.

That's why custom building you can get what you want for the price you want. :V
Pro-Tip: the free way, or the "I already own this operating system/software/whatever, so I'll just move it to the newly built computer" way.
