I know all of the necessary rules to drive. In Australia we have to complete a test before being able to get our learners licence. Then if the driving instructor feels that we miss out any while they are taking us around they will just call us out on it. I don't feel that's an issue.
Merging is they *beeping* worst. I feel that I cannot see everything and that theres going to be a car that magically appears out of no where. This is going to sound gross but whenever I drive because I get nervous I sweat a lot from my hands and because merging and changing lanes is probably the most terrifying thing to do I have goddam Niagara falls coming out of my hands.
I just don't know..

I always forget to check my blind spot when merging because ...
I'm dumb I guess.

Or I don't check it well enough because I checked it too quickly cos my neck hurts turning it like that.
Driving is HARD, seriously. And while I agree that all your points are entirely valid, I don't think you should give up hope of EVER driving.
we have to take tests here too to get permits to learn to drive in a car. and they suck.
but then its just a road test thats supposed to be pretty easy--in all honesty, I think I could pass it if they gave me the opportunity, and a quick brush-up course before my lesson (as its been a couple months since i've driven).
XP You don't really merge often in these tests I think, you mostly just need to drive around a city, and then park and do a K-turn. At least in NY.
