USA has eight medals in total. We have twice as many as the next closest country.

I'm only saying that as an observation. I'm not saying the US is super awesome or that any of the other countries suck.

edit: Actually, I guess we're at nine now.

USA is big, not that that should matter, but more people means more good athletes.

Maybe it's because we don't have the government sponsored programs like a lot of the other countries do. To get to the Olympics, our athletes have to prove themselves all on their own, so it motivates them harder than some of the other competitors.

Our athletes don't have government funding to back them.

It's just a thought. I mean, when you've got the government programs, that is the pool of athletes they choose from. That can be kind of limiting.

Meanwhile, without the set pool of athletes, America theoretically has a greater number of athletes to choose from even before you take population into account. Besides, there are countries with larger populations than the US.

Yeah, but it's only a theory. Also, I'm sure there are merits to the government programs as well. I can think of one pretty easily, actually: money.

Becoming an Olympian isn't a cheap endearvor. That's part of why you see corproate sponsorship in the American broadcasts. The teams have to get their money to train, travel, and outfit their people somehow.

well one thing bigger countries have an advantage in is that they have a larger amount of people and by having more people they have more shots at getting medals

Estonia won silver, and Switzerland's won a couple of medals so far. They're pretty small countries.

Then again... aren't a lot of countries small compared to ones like China, Russia, and the US?

Um... I almost feel like I saw one athlete from India, but I might be mistaken. I don't think they're big participants in the Winter Games.

I just checked. India has three athletes in this Olympics.
