lol, yeah! I'd hate to have to try to catch flies all day! but it actually takes days to consume the food so you don't have to give it to them often.

Do they require meat? Or is just watering enough?

I don't remember... I think they might actually do require it >F^ I should probably look it up to be positive.

Found the info, here's a quote from something I found:

Quote:
Though it's technically carnivorous, a plant that captures and digests insects as a source of nutrients is actually called insectivorous. The reason it needs meat is simply that that's how it lives; in addition to the regular requirements of CO2, water and sunlight, it gets most of its nutrition from the insects it traps, rather than the earth. This is due to its native habitat: a bog. Bogs are nitrogen-poor, so the earth cannot provide this nutrition.

That's very interesting! I wonder if it would survive if you fed it nitrogen in the soil.

[Yay! a thread that I understand ; 3; Joining in conversations becomes hard on here, which makes it difficult to post. OTL]

A venus flytrap? ^^ Woww...The farthest I've ever gone with gardening is probably planting raddishes with my classmates. But it turned out the fertilizer we were using wasn't good for raddishes, so the raddishes turned out small. ^^; It was nitrogen fertilizer which is better for green veggies.

I remember when I was young. We always had a garden of some sorts.
As I got older, I tried to have a garden myself, but only managed to grow slugs
(yech...disgusting things!).

I think that we may try a "window" herb garden.

welcome Rina! I'm actually no plant expert either, when I had my venus fly trap I think I was in 7th grade, I talked my mom into getting it, but it didn't live very long ^_^0 my family used to have actual crops and stull like corn fields, so I helped a lot back in the day, but that was a long time ago when things were more affordable.

e__e Erm, hello. I thought I spied some chatter about Venus Flytraps in here. ^^:
I have two of them, and they're both about a year old. Small dinky things, but alive nonetheless.

Yay a lurker hangout! I'm a lurker at heart. A sick one at that too. I've got a nasty cold. I'm just trying to find a place to hang out and get some carrots. Everyone seems to be gone right now though. Or I'm just a thread killer on top of being a lurker. :P

Venus flytraps kind of creep me out. The thought of a plant catching flies and eating meat is weird.

Hey, Kieryn! I hope you start feeling better. Cute name, by the way.

Hello Will and First! I'm making some soup and flitting about trying to find people to talk to. I don't have the hang of posting in more than one thread at once yet.

I'm sleepy though too. I want to get my carrots in though. We'll see what happens. I'm almost half way there.

Edit - Glad you like my name! ^.^ I like it a lot too. I thought I had made it up, but apparently it is an actual name. Who'd of known?

Good luck getting your set of the event items, Kieryn.

I want some carrots. Well, what I really want is a pot roast with potatoes and carrots.

Thanks! I should be able to do it. They seem to be coming quickly now. I'm almost halfway there. ^.^

Pot roast with potatoes and carrots and a nice gravy. That would be good. I'm having soup. Won ton soup to be precise. The pot roast might be tomorrow, depending on how I feel.

I've never had won ton soup. I don't eat much Asian food at all, especially if soy sauce is anywhere nearby. Soy sauce and my gag reflex are enemies.

Mmm... I love won ton soup. I have no idea where to get any where I am right now though. ...Of course, I could probably find some if I ventured into Chinatown, but I'm lazy and unfamiliar with this one.

Won ton soup, nice topic lol. Better than carrots and variations of dishes with carrots in them.

We have one of the top Chinese restaurants in the country near where I live. It's downtown, which is about 20-25 minutes from my house. I live out in the country. The only "restaurant" we have is a Subway, and three of our stores sell freshly-cooked food. I went completely off-topic there... Anyway, I haven't eaten at the restaurant, but my brother and sister love it, and its commercial comes on the local channels all the time.

I don't believe I've ever had won ton soup either.
Only egg drop or hot and sour soup.

I haven't had those either. I'm definitely not what would be considered an adventurous eater. I'm actually fairly picky.

Oh my, I've never cared for split pea soup. Too, too, -green- for me!

I think my favorite soup is tomato bisque.
