The authors did a study one why students want to audition to become music education majors. What influenced them growing up, what persons influenced them, what experiences influenced them, etc :D

I really does apply to me as a teacher to be honest. They found that the most influential persons are the chorus, band, and orchestra teachers that students have in high school. IN addition, they were were influenced by their band teacher, the most likely want to be a band teacher themselves not a chorus or orchestra teacher.
There is some communication about a career in music in a high school ensemble but not a lot in the middle and elementary school levels. So they suggest that earlier grades should talk about music careers as well.
There aren't a lot of students who audition to become a music major who want to be a general elementary school teacher and that's because all their expereiences have been at the high school level. Things like performances with their high school groups motivate the students to become high school teachers.
All this reflects the students who went to college with me. Most of us went in to become high school teachers. Most of the students left wanting to be high school teachers and very few of us wanted to become elementary music teachers instead.

That's really interesting. I wanted to be a music teacher, elementary level. I dunno if I ever told you that.
I ended up going for just elementary education because of one douche bag (pardon my language)

haha - no it's really not that. When questioned about influential music teachers, students will always state their high school teachers. I don't know if this is because, by the time they are older they forget their experiences in music in the younger grades, or what. But it's fresh in their minds when they decide what career to go into. They forget about the stuff they did when they were younger even if it was good.
High school and middle school kids are just as unpredictable as the younger. And to be honest, the younger are NICER because they usually want to learn...whereas by the time they get to high school or middle school - they are kicking and fighting and wnat to be anyway BUT school. (That's true except in the elite ensembles...those kids have to audition and work to be there...so in that case, they WANT to be there).

interesting study. My school had music teachers 3rd grade and up. But it discouraged music. If you had a passion for it and you really wanted to learn, but you had no previous expereince (in THIRD grade) than you were unlikley to get on the band, and therfore. not really have a music class.
I tried. but i couldn't figure out how to blow into the mouth pieces(cause that's all they gave us) on my first experience with the things EVER. and was told "you're shit. NEXT"

Sha's school makes cora sad.
Cora's school had a wonderful music program straight through. Cora was in chorus, select chorus, musicals every year, band (This is where I learned to play the Sax, which I hate btw. I prefere the piano), all count chorus, all state chorus. Variety shows.....you name it. I was part of the performing crew.

THat really sucks Sha!!
I LOVE teaching elementary music because I teach kids to read and learn music early on. It's general - it's not like, "Here's a trumpet now blow" It's more like, teach them quarter, eighth, half, whole, sixteenth notes etc. Teach them history, teach them how to read pitches, teach the percussion, how to move to music, how to sing, etc.
It is so much fun because you make the lessons fun! And it prepares kids for music in middle and high school :D

haha you and I sound the same - I did all that as well! I was lucky with my music! My elementary teachers weren't very good but my mom was a music teacher so I learned from her through elementary. Then in middle and high school I was SO involved all the time! Did all state, all county, musicals, show choir, regular choir, teacher assistant for choir, private lessons, community choirs, etc. I played flute at home :D

It totally makes a difference!
I was one of those students that went into music education wanting to teach high school chorus. I loved it so much growing up. But I realized that I just LOVE LOVE LOVE elementary music! You have so much fun with them and they have so much fun with you! Everything is a game but they learn at the same time. They actually want to learn and be there which just makes all the difference :)

@Maria- I was never able to afford music lessons. My father refused to pay for them....because he felt they where a waste of time, and if I wanted them I had to pay for them myself.....never was able to happen. Instead I bought a flute, a guitar, and some books and tought myself how to play. Its not really hard if you know how to read music.
My father did however for my birthday when I was eight, buy me my piano.

Elementary kids are so much more malleable.
Also if a elementary student is misbehaving, you divert their attention to something else and the problem solves its self 90% of the time. In high school you try this the student becomes worse.

I lucked out. My mom went to school for music education and was incredibly supportive of me in music. My brothers and I were allowed to have one thing that was our own. One of my brothers did karate, another ROTC, and I got to have music lessons. THe voice lessons were 15$ a lesson...30 minutes each. But the teacher was so nice and the lesson would always end up being almost an hour and she never charged extra. My mom, even though she was a single parent for some of my upbringing and didn't have a lot of extra money, would always make sure I got to my voice lesson and paid for it. I am lucky to have her be so supportive of me and to work so hard. It paid off at least, since I'm now a music teacher as well XD

That was my dad - told me I would never make it as a musician and I should go into computers where the real money was. Otherwise I'd be poor and homeless the rest of my life.
That's such a great thing to tell a kid in 7th grade >.<

Hi guys!
When I was young, my parents could only afford piano lessons for one kid.
So my brother got them.
He also got to be a boy scout too, cuz they had the uniform from our older brother.
I couldn't be a girl scout cuz they couldn't afford the uniform.
Finally when I was in 7th grade, Dad got a clarinet.
He was a cop, and I think when he was investigating something at a pawn shop it caught his eye, and the dealer gave it to him. It had been broken and then glued together. It worked, but the danged thing was always flat. I usually played it with the mouthpiece pulled as far out as I could, making it wobble.
