Well, their entire family were Spanish-speaking, and most came from another country. The grandfather didn't actually speak English, and just referred to me as "the white white girl", lol. Eventually the neighborhood picked it up as blanco gringa, too. It might have been a blaring head of red hair and white skin in contrast to everyone else's dark skin and dark hair.

I don't feel the same way about Spanish, or any latin speakers for that matter - most likely because I spent a year in Brazil. They speak Portuguese there, but so many people speak Spanish. Because I'm fluent in Portuguese, and I can safely say that to me, it sounds like Spanish slang, and Spanish sounds like a beautiful language. I'm trying to master it, but I get it mixed up with my Portuguese. But, I can definitely say I know how you feel. Here, we have a lot of Middle Eastern people, and while I love ALL races and languages and colors, tongues etc...it drives me crazy that they come here and don't learn our language. If you are going to live here, and have for a long time, I don't want to effin be told that you can't speak English. I'm grateful that I speak French, because when you call customer service, and select English, the person rarely ever speaks English...so I select French lol.
