I don't want to get people mad here...but I just want to throw in my two cents about this...From my understanding, a person can make manga styled comics...but the comic can't be considered a manga unless it's produced in Japan. As I said, many people draw manga styled comics, but it's not officially a "manga" if it's printed/produced outside of Japan. I've been a fan of anime and manga since I was in my early teens, and I remember reading that a few times. I may be taking this a bit too seriously...so forgive me...I just wanted to put that out there.

well, technically, any comic is manga. manga is just the japanese word for comic, so, i find it all to be the same thing. actually, tho, manga would more likely fall under graphic novels rather than comic books.

Yeah in America a comic book that is 1000's of pages long and read form left to right is a Graphic novel. But the same comic book is read form right to left it is an American Manga. Manga means comic but, it is also a style of drawing.

well, actually, i think that the regular comic books are the short ones that are probably like 20 pages or something like that. a graphic novel is really long, like 200 pages, like a regular book. just, it's the japanese ones that are always read right to left. i can't remember why, but it has something to do with the culture. american graphic novels are probably read left to right unless they were made by a manga obsessed artist, like me. honestly, i don't think i could even read a regular comic anymore cuz i read manga too much and are too used to reading right to left.

I'm working on my own "manga" inspired comic book. It's a BL story, so I don't know how many of you would be interested in it. (the link is in my signature).

I don't know how artist serialized in magazines can churn out a chapter a month, I only get about a page done every week! XD I guess I'm kinda slow.

I guess I started working on it because I needed to always have something I could draw (art block sucks) and I've always been impressed with how much the art usually improves from the time an artist starts a comic, to the time they finish.

The artists that complete manga usually work in a company (Tokyo pop, VIZ media, ETC....) and have Introu 2 pads (i think that that is what they are called) so what they do is draw a rough draft and then, scan it onto the computer and then go over it with computer accuracey. then they add all the backgrounds and copy every section allowing each panel to be finished within a month. Those Pads cost $700.00 the cheapest to $4000.00 which is the best

Hm, well I still can't manage to even sketch a chapter in a month's time. But that is their job I suppose, they have the time for that.

That program is quite pricey. O.O

i personally dont really sketch out my manga before i actually draw it. i tried that, but it just doesnt work for me. instead, i just start drawing, pretty much. i'll get out the paper i'm drawing on, outline the panels, and sometimes just write what's going to be in a panel so i don't forget. other than that, i don't plan ahead too much.

I thumbnail what I want to happen in a chapter (otherwise I forget D: ) Then I sketch it out with nonphoto pencil. Then I usually try to leave it for a day or two, maybe work on something else and then come back. I do this because when originally sit down and draw something it all looks right, but then when you look back on it you can notice some pretty glaring errors. ( at least that's how it happens with me). Then I finally go over it and make some nice lines, scan it and pop it on the internet. Rinse and repeat.

yeah, i've noticed that with my work. i've been working on this one manga, and at first, the earlier pages were great! but looking back at them now, they aren't that great. they're still pretty good, but there are some that i definitely have to fix.

Yeah. I hate going back to look at something and saying "I can't believe I missed something so obviously wrong?"

How is your manga coming along?

mine is very slow right now -_- i started it months ago, but had to stop for a while. i'm trying to start up again, but i'm not sure how to finish the page i stopped on. i know what to do afterward, but i'm just stuck. altho, i am somewhere about half way thru it. but then, i think i might have to redraw the last few pages it did.

Well it's at least good that you're halfway through right?

I've been working on mine for a year and I'm only on chapter two, and want to redo the prologue and Ch.1. D:

well, i told myself when i started that i wouldn't redo any pages unless i absolutely need to. the only pages that really need to be redone are the last 3 or 4 i did. as for the rest, i'll probably just need to redraw a few panels.

Monsun: I've read comics where the artist would get through the first chapter and then start over. She did like, three or four times and the beginning was basically the same thing. It was pretty crazy.

Binkakitty: Yea, I tell myself that to. I don't want to redraw it because of art reasons, I want to redraw it because I found a better way to tell it, and I also wanted to add some extra information.

a lot of my manga, tho, i have to fix up big time. even on the pics that turned out good, there are a few lines that decided to stray, so i wanna fix those up on the computer. now, if only i could use a working scanner. there is only one scanner in this house, hooked up to only one computer, and no one other than my mother-in-law is allowed to use that computer now. T_T

Monson: Wow, that's pretty harsh. I think you should definitely work on it again some time.

Binkakitty: That really sucks. Lucky for me no one in the house uses the printer/scanner, so it's hooked up in my room to my computer.

i have a question. if you guys ever published any of your manga, would you ever go for publishing at least one in full color? either that, or at least one chapter every now and again?

that's what i'm going to try to do with my manga i'm working on right now. since it's pretty much a one shot story, probably only going to be around 150 pages, coloring it shouldn't be too hard. even tho i prefer coloring by hand, i'm going to do all this on the computer. i have a photoshop elements version 4, which may not be the best, but it works just fine for me.

Im being published by a small publishing company, and after i get really good at the game i'll consider going to Tokyopop or VIZ. but i only color the Chapter Pages, you know the pages that declare a new Chapter, but thats my style, you can do what you want, coloring every page will cost you more out of you profits you will make.

yeah, i know. usually, i just color the first page or two of a chapter. but for this manga, since it's not long, i really want it in color. plus, there is the manga my husband and i are working on. he's writing the story and i'm drawing it. anyway, he wants to publish it in full color, too. but this one probably would be expensive to publish or whatever, cuz it is going to be one looooong manga. we haven't started, but we keep coming up with new ideas. and those are the random ideas, not the main part of the story.
