The anita blake books were okay up until Obsidian Butterfly. I didn't get far into the Anne Rice books...

*Feels like an outsider because her fave Vamp book is Dracula* Sorry, for it's time it was actually scary. Guess I'm just old fashioned.

I really like the Twilight saga, but I wish it had remained only a book; there was no hate for it before the movie turned it into some stupid romance story about gay vampires. I just think that the movie ruined the book - turned the lead into a thoughtless Mary-Sue-ish character, lessened the love into just lust, and lessened the feelings of the characters. Twilight in itself was a great read (I read it a year before the movie got made) and I adored Eclipse and New Moon, but Breaking Dawn was disappointing for me :P

I loved the Darren Shan novels! I've only read the first three, but they were great. The best thing about them was that they were still nice vampires, as opposed to Twilight (Yeah, I'm still bitter about that xD), but they were still blood-sucking vampires and all. The books were full of danger, adventure and supernatural fantasy just enough in my opinion. I heard they made a movie for it, but I have yet to see it :P

i liked the historian, although it took a while to get into. Its not very vamp heavy, more like a mystery novel. Lost Souls is pretty much a classic, right up their with the vampire cronicles. Anne rice is of course a given, I've read the entire series so much i can practicly recite it. Its been a while since i read it, but i think Salems lot was pretty good.

Some of the books I recommend at my Bookstore I work at for the Vampire Genre.

Amelia Atwater-rhodes- very well set books characters are about high school age. Amazingly written when the author was 15 now she is 22 i believe. Most of them are short story except her snake and hawk series which I believe is going on 9 books. Worth your time to read.

Laurell K. Hamilton- First 4 are really good mystery/ Buffy after about the 5th one it gets a little....hhhhmmmmm erotic would be the word I guess. ;) read the first four if you like go on to the others just knowing there not quite the same as what you first read.

Patricia Briggs- werewolves that raised a native american shape shifter who then leaves to move to the tri-states. Becomes a mechanic and get involved with the vampires, faerie, and of course werewolf pack for the tri-state area. The vampires in her book are for the most part from Spain and very old world.... except for one who dresses like shaggy and drives the mystery machine that Mercy is fixing. :) A FANTASTIC READ!!!!!!! I loved this series and whipped through it in like two nights. Very witty and well written.

J.R. Ward- Amazing!

Sookie stackhouse.....um authors last name is Harris can't remember the first lol. It has been made into a t.v. series. still an excellent read especially if you like the south. i.e. louisianna :)

Kim Harrison- another good one

Dakota Banks- First time author her new book is called "Dark Times" not really a vampire one but still really amazing. Starts at the salem witch burning time period where a girl being burned at the stake makes a deal with one of the children of the old gods of babylon. :) Not a good god but turns out to be one of the powerful 9 siblings that are basically demons. Starts out great middle is good ending she leaves you screaming at her wanting the second book cause the first is a cliff hanger.... >.< second book not out till fall probably....grrrr.

Thats all I can remember at this moment. :) Hope it helps.

Does anyone know of the Vampire Heart series. That's another good one... but these vampires can stay out during day time without sparkling or burning up.

A good vampire series (though it's a manga rather than a Novel) is called Karin or alternatively Chibi Vampire (not sure why it has two names)

The only Vampire series that I ever really got into was The Vampire Chronicles because they made them believable. I tried reading Twilight but I couldn't get into it and the explanations I heard from friends(who were really into it at the time) made the series sound stupid. Vampires can be pretty interesting to read about but I'm really picky about what I'll read when it comes to them since Rice set such a high standard. I did read the first Vampire Diaries (way before they made that TV series) and maybe half of the second. It was interesting because LJ Smith incorporated different things about vampires, like not being able to come in without permission, to show she did some research and then added her own flair.
There is this one called 'A Hunger Like No Other'. Its the only romance book I ever read in my life. I wasn't all for the 'extras' but the the book had an interesting concept to it. It wasn't just about vampires rather it incorporated a bunch of other species too. The main character was a halfling but she got the worst of both worlds in a sense. Every 500yrs there is a type of battle that eliminates the Immortals and she gets caught up in it.

jekkerbunny: That Dakota Banks' one sounds pretty interesting! But I hate cliff hangers so I'm unlikely to pick that one up until the next book comes out.

Twilight created sparkling vampires, something I'm not completely a fan of.
L.J. Smith's book such as Night Word Series, or Vampire Diaries are not bad. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is pretty good too. Of course, Anne Rice is amazing; hm..what else.
Oh, House of Night is pretty cool too I guess. And there are alot of books that have vampires in them but isn't the main theme-like Mortal Instruments which I love. There's the whole Kissing Coffins thing which is pretty good, although not one of my favorites. Dracula=amazing, case closed.

The Sookie Stackhouse series is fantastic! I see that a couple other people in this thread have already mentioned it, and its awesome that other people have read it and seen the TV show both. It has its cliche moments, almost any vampire series does, but it breaks so many other cliches that you don't care. The heroine is fairly realistic, and the vampires have flaws. Lots of flaws.
Dracula rocks my world too. I'd highly recommend everyone read it. It's fascinating, especially when read in perspective to it being the beginning of all the other novels mentioned here. Dracula, I believe, was the first romanticized vampire tale to be put in writing. Its also interesting to contrast the beginnings of Mr. Van Helsing to what he is now.

Karen Chance is an amazing vamp author. Both of her series are in the same universe, but the first series is about a woman who has the ability to time travel, and she's caught up in a really awesome world of vampires, fairies, and demons. It's really well written, and it gets labeled romance, but there really isn't that much romance in the books.

I haven't actually read the Dorina series, but a friend of mine really loves them.

Cassandra Palmer Series
Touch the Dark
Claimed by Shadow
Embrace the Night
Curse the Dawn

Dorina Basarab Series (Dhampyr Series)

Midnight's Daughter
Death's Mistress

I always suggest Christopher Pike's The Last Vampire as well. It was the first vamp series that I read, and it's still one of my favorites. I mean the original series, not the new add-on Thirst, which I haven't read yet.

by far one of the best written series ive read would have to be E.E.Knight's Vampire Earth saga. set in a post apocalyptic setting where vampires have taken over and enslaved the human race save for a human resistance made up of humans trained by these other creatures that oppose the vampires creating a three caste system of wolves, cats, and bears to fight the onslaught. the first book is titles way of the wolf and the series follows one, david valentine as he starts his wolf training and ends with him as a bear in the 8th book, all the while showing off his journeys throughout the ravaged american countrysides and his battles.

----------

as for the Etc List

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, The abhorsen cronicles, the host by stephanie meyer, war for the oaks by emma bull, Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Stray by rachel vincent, evermore by alyson noel, I'll think of more later prolly

I tried reading Twilight various times, but frankly the writing style pissed me off, and couldn't finish it, not counting the characters and the heretic way they described vampires. I liked a sweet little teenage book called Sucks to be Me, which I found hilarious. I was also reading the Blue Blood series, but have only read the first one. The way they made vampires was quite interesting <3
