Lao Fei considered that for a moment. He had seen quite a bit in his short life- meditation was a valuable tool for insight in human nature. Sure, he wasn't in that state of no-mind yet, but he was close enough. The answer he gave was a typical one for a monk- looking at both sides.

"I believe that loyalty to parents is the foundation for a good life. Respecting their wishes is important. But there is a time when one must seek the council of their own soul and find their own way. Everyone has a different path to enlightenment- a parental figure gives guidance, but one must find their own truth and way of doing things.

"Even if that means saying no to someone you care for deeply."

**

Quote:
Keeping her eyes on where she wanted her hands to meet the pole, Suki swung her arms and jumped with all her might. Her hands made contact with the pole, but one of them slipped.
And the crowd let out a collective, "Oooooh!"

This was getting dangerous... and she had made it all the way up there in twelve seconds! She was fast. Very fast. But was she fast enough? The crowd would find out in three seconds.

Quote:
Her hands made contact with the pole, but one of them slipped. Her right arm dangling at her side, Suki grimaced to keep her grip.
Three...

Quote:
Swinging her right arm up, she managed to get a good grip and pulled with all her might, using her inner thighs to help her get her bodyweight higher on the pole.
Two...

Quote:
Surely enough, Suki managed to get her whole body up, planted her right foot underneath her hand and then stood upright one one leg, successful.
One!

The crowd went nuts. She had made it! But they had to wait for...

"Fifteen seconds! Winner!"

Okay, now they went crazy. She had actually done it. This was one of the most difficult challenges the festival had to offer, and she had demonstrated that difficulty. But in the end, she had done it. Two men walked over to help her down, if she couldn't make it herself, and she received a nice cash prize.

"See here? It's not impossible! Anyone can do it if they give it a shot! Just step right up and go for the big prize! Balance is the key!"

Suki beamed from ear to ear with pleasure. It wasn't the cheering of the crowd or the money, just the pure satisfaction of completing the task and beating the time by five seconds. She didn't care if some one beat it immediately after her, that was not the point. She had a set a bar and anyone who could beat that she would try and snap up for the Constance or just heartily congratulate.

Taking the offered hands of the men graciously, Suki allowed herself to be helped down from the tallest pole. She could have easily slipped down herself but she was unsure of the finishing of the poles and wanted to avoid the possibility of getting hundreds of tiny little splinters in her hands and looking foolish in doing so.

Once down from the pole, Suki made a conscious effort to turn down her pride and accept the cash prize with humility and dignity. Back to her reserved self, she went over to the woman who was looking extremely surprised but also very pleased to holding the winner's articles. Many little children started the swarm the woman seeing that Suki was approaching her, all gabbering in high pitched squeals of nonsense that Suki couldn't understand.

"Thank you very much for holding my particulars for me." Suki reached into the pouch of prize winnings and pulled out a coin without looking, which happened to be a little more generous than the woman expected, "As I promised."

Pressing the coin into the woman's hand with a thankful smile, Suki then put her jacket and her hat back on a hailed a near by merchant. Giving him enough money to give each of the little children a small candy Suki started to move her way out of the crowd, receiving the occasional congratulatory slap on the back from strangers.

Outside the crowd, Suki took a discreet look inside the pouch. There was a fair amount of coin in the contents, which surprised her a little bit. Used to competing for the pitiful lieutenant's weekly salary whilst on board the Constance, Suki would have never seen this much money unless they managed to capture a valuable prize ship. The amount in the pouch would be plenty for a new fine lance, some more shot for her pistol, a few new articles of her uniform that had to be replaced, and then a little towards buying the men on board some fresh milk and meat. If Suki managed to barter well enough, which she was relying on, she would still have a tidy little sum to put away and save for when she wasn't as lucky in competition.

Knowing full well that as long as she had this amount of pure coin on her she was in danger of pickpocketing or worse, Suki placed the purse inside her shirt close to her heart and immediately set off to perform her errands with a happy heart. Luckily the contact she was meeting was on the way.

The woman blinked for a moment, as if she were trying to find out if this were real or not. Then she grinned widely, displaying a perfect row of teeth for someone who was a peasant. At least she was well taken care of.

"Thank you very much! The spirits watch over you," She exclaimed, bowing as Suki walked away.

The tavern that the sailor was supposed to meet her contact at was packed full, and it seemed that there was no room in the inn, so to speak. Gotta love festival time, eh? The man was in his mid-thirties, clean-shaved and of a stocky build. He had chosen this area because it was, mostly, his watering hole. His favorite drinking spot.

He was sober today, sure... but tomorrow, depending on how their recruitment drive went, he would be lit up like the midnight fireworks. He spotted Suki and, from his table at the far northeastern end of the room, he stood slowly and waved.

Lao Fei simply smiled back in return. He did not feel seduced or charmed in the least, though he knew what the words meant and what the emotions were. A smile was just a smile, a sign of emotion. He was indeed happy that she was happy, but there was nothing else.

Still, she was cute. He could accept the thoughts from that part of his mind if he looked at it from an objective approach. That said, it was only a fleeting thing before his mind was once again clear of intent. Transient emotions were nothing to get excited about.

"I am simply stating what I believe to be true."

Quote:
"I don't believe you told me your name."
Lao Fei nodded, his eyes dipping from sight. He had entirely forgotten, hadn't he?

"Do forgive me. My name is Lao Fei Zhu." He then lifted his head, returning to maintaining eye contact. "And while we are on the subject of becoming acquainted, what is your name? I would not want to call you High Priestess forever, lest the situation called for it."

"Hoshimi. Though Tsai calls me Shi-ko or Hoshimi-chan." She was a little bit more open now that he wasn't thinking that she'd charmed him. It was something she had to be wary of after all. He claims that Shi-ko reminds him of a woman that he would have considered a sister. He called her that very name too though he would never tell me what her real name was.

The road seemed so very long. Soon they would have to face the guards who were admitting the petitioners for the ceremony. Her elaborate hairstyle was pushed out of her way, as she pulled the hood of the cloak back from her head once more. No sense in it until she saw the emperor once more.

Something nagged at the back of Lao Fei's mind. He had that little itch at the back of his neck again. It was something just at the edges of memory- something that his soul knew, but his mind and body did not. He could almost swear that...

"...I've heard that name before. Known it, perhaps."

Then the monk chuckled. There was no such thing as coincidence. Though the choices one made shaped destiny, there was always the Hand of Fate.

"Yes, indeed... our meeting is well-starred... Hoshimi. We will have good fortune in this endeavor of ours, whether the emperor accepts your proposition or not."

With that, they continued down the road.

"Mayhaps someone in the Phoenix Temple. That's where Tsai was from before he became my guardian. But I'm sure you know that since you referred to him as sifu." The girl looked ahead, for several moments;silent. "I cannot tell if our meeting was well starred or not. But it seems that at least for now, your destiny is intertwined with mine. I cannot see into it, as I cannot see into my own."

This seemed to disturb the girl slightly, but it was hard to tell, unless one noted the slight tightening of the grip she held onto her staff. "Unless we've gotten lost, we should see the Emperor's attendants soon to begin the cleansing."

Out of the corner of his left eye, he noticed that the grip on her staff tightened subtly. His mind connected words to actions- the thought of not being able do discern her own destiny, the direction in which she should walk, disturbed her greatly. She could read so well into others, but not herself.

Lao Fei said nothing at this for quite some time after she had finished speaking. After the pause however, he responded. It was a few seconds late, but he spoke.

"Perhaps it is not that you are unable to look into your destiny- it is simply that you have not decided what that destiny is yet. True, one can never look into their own destiny- it is impossible. However, that is because destiny is a personal matter, and must be decided for one's self. It's why we have free will."

With that said, he focused on the road ahead, until he did indeed see the palace up ahead. He had been here several times, but the first time he saw it as a young child, it amazed him. It was so big; so many rooms and places to look at. So many interesting things to do.

Now, he had been somewhat enlightened. It was just a building, just like the Emperor was just a man. A smart, cunning, yet diplomatic man... but in the end, just a man.

"There it is!"

She darted away from him towards the palace, but glanced back at him, the sadness gone from her eyes for the moment, appearing as if she was nothing but a beautiful young girl with no cares.

"No matter how beautiful the temple at home is, the palace is always such a beautiful represenation of what Chiazu aspires to." her eyes twinkled with stardust.

Lao Fei chuckled in amusement. The look on her features had changed so quickly, it was almost easy to tell how she was feeling just by looking at her. Jogging after her in calm fashion, he was now convinced that this young woman was quite interesting to be around.

Still... if she has such a wonderful smile, why is she so sad all the time? What could have possibly happened for her to be so melancholy?

He wanted to see that smile again, and wondered what had happened to cause that constant downcast expression.

"We're almost there!"

The gates opened with a light touch from Hoshimi's hand, almost as if they were petals waiting to be opened. The delicate smile on the tiny girl was bursting with good natured joy.

"Halt" Two guards were just past the gates, and their swords blocked Lao and Hoshimi's way.

Lao Fei had arrived just in time to see the guards bar their path with a pair of three foot long, three inch wide, deeply curved broadswords, the blades a length of twenty-eight inches. They were sharp, they were heavy, and these two seemed to wield them quite well. Lao Fei spoke first as he approached.

"Peace, brothers. Lay down your arms- we come without malice, seeking an audience with the Emperor. I am Lao Fei Zhu, a monk from the Phoenix Temple," he said with a slight bow. "This is Shi-ko, a representative from the Leviathan."

Clever, how he had used her nickname.

The guards looked at one another uneasily, but they put their weapons down. With the war between Chaizu and Erios getting closer, everyone was uneasy and it was hard to resist the urge to stop all petitioners. But it was part of the festival.

"Alright, but unless you are the represenatives of your districts you go no further than the bathing houses." For each person, before they could speak to the emperor had to be cleansed. An easy thing for a Leviathan priestess to do, but still part of the ritual.

Hoshimi was sedate once more, that sad quiet smile lingering on her face. She bowed to each of the guards. "Thank you for your service. May the Circles protect you."

Once they were past the guards, Hoshimi looked over at Lao. "The one on the left will die in the war, protecting one of the treasures after he is specially chosen for the duty so that his family line will continue and he wouldn't be in danger."

She then indicated the one on their right, and though only Lao could hear her, he seemed to shudder as they passed. "He will live long, but his wife will leave him because his duty to the emperor comes before her."

Hoshimi's emotions had shifted again. The tingle at the back of his neck informed him that something was wrong as soon as she became sedate. And then, the reason became clear as she clearly defined each man's fate, in detail. The guard shuddered, but Lao Fei could not see him.

"It's the Sight, isn't it."

It wasn't a question- more of a statement. He knew on some base level that those with the Sight saw more than most mortals could see. She saw the future. Everyone's future. Just one look and she could reach far into them, touching the threads of their fate.

He began to realize why she had that expression on her face all the time.

And yet, he didn't know what to say. What could one say, really? Nothing... his mind was empty. He realized why she had been so happy- because she could not see, for once. Hoshimi saw nothing but the palace, and what it represented.

And upon this realization, he took pity on her. He decided right then and there that he would indeed go with her on her journey, whether accepted or not.

She simply nodded. There wasn't much she could say, was there. "We're almost at the bathing houses. Thank you for escorting me. Lao." She turned and looked at him, her silver blue eyes shimmering.

"And watch out for that first step after the gates. You don't want to break your nose." Apparently, once they were seperated, for at least a bit, she could see slightly into his future. And witht hat she turned around, and moved into the bathing house, freeing him up to do his own thing until time for the ceremony.

And as Hoshimi turned to leave, the monk simply bowed. Indeed, there was nothing more to say. With that, he kept in mind what he had observed. A girl that saw nothing but the future, but was denied the ability to gain insight into her own. He concluded with a nod of his head, that it would make anyone sad, if all they saw was the end of one's road when they looked into a person's eyes.

It was dismal.

But now that he had a slight insight into his own future (though it was a single step and nothing more), he smiled to himself. He did indeed watch out for that first step, and it did have a slightly raised protrusion that would be rather easy to trip on, if it went unnoticed. He stepped over that first step instead and went his merry way.

He was determined to see her again. After all, he was a creature of fire- though he had a calm exterior, it was his inner nature that was ablaze. Perhaps this was why he could see so well into others.

Besides... he was about to go somewhere. It excited him. But his face never changed, expression kept at a bare minimum as he headed down the rest of the stairs. Still, he allowed himself a smile as he headed back to the area where the Phoenix Temple monks were located.

Suki left the butchers with a happy heart. She had managed to get a decent new lance and fitted for an more updated uniform all at decent prices thanks to the bartering skills her mother taught her, but also got a fine cut of beef for the crew to enjoy (sent anonymously). She still had a few coins left but she would save that. Now all she had to do was rendezvous with the man about the recruitment of hands. The Captain had given Suki a little forewarning about the man she was about to meet.

"I don't need to tell you lieutenant that sometimes when we desperately need hands, like when we do now, the navy sometimes associates with people they might not necessarily associate with normally." Captain Terrin had said, pacing the small width of his quarters, "So I trust that you will exercise your discretion in these circumstances. We need hands and the man I'm sending you to meet will help provide them."

"Aye aye sir." Suki saluted and bowed slightly and started to exit the chambers.

"Lieutenant." The Captain stated, halting Suki in her tracks.

"Yes, sir?"

"This man. He spends most of his time on dry land as wet as he would at sea." The captain looked at Suki pointedly. Suki understood immediately and saluted and bowed once more, leaving the quarters.

When the man stood up, albeit slowly, but steadily. Inside, Suki was a little relieved but she didn't show it. It was so much easier to speak with some one about intricate and special matters when they were sober and not when they drunk out of their bucket.

Making her way through the busy room and avoiding the wandering hands of the men at the tables with a stern glance, Suki reached the man at the table.

"Mr. Queek, I understand you're a man to be respected about in this area when it comes to understanding and recruiting the local men." Suki said cordially with a small, but respectful, bow.

"I'm Lieutenant Mai." Suki said extending her hand to the man across the table.

The man shook hands briefly. He was found to have quite the handshake. Queek didn't look like the kind of man who drunk often, at least not now, but he had been through quite a bit. He was neither this sober nor this cleanly shaved in quite some time, and that was due to a series of events that he'd rather forget.

Still, he did look presentable for the moment.

"Good afternoon, lieutenant. I trust you've been enjoying yourself?"

Not like he had heard what was going on at the attraction of the monkey poles. He was simply asking how she was doing.

Suki sat herself down at the table, facing Mr. Queek.

"The festivities here are certainly interesting Mr. Queek, but I am primarily here on business for the Constance." Suki said, feeling guilty about her participation in the monkey pole competition. In retrospect, she probably shouldn't have participated in the competition but she was, unwittingly, swept up in the humour and spirit of the festival. She would have to make sure she didn't let that happen again as it would deter her from the business she was her to do.

"We're looking for a large number of able bodied hands, Mr Queek. Good, strong, men with sound minds and preferably ones that have had experience on the sea. Normally we'd be looking in the port towns a little more but since the festival is happening right now it seems like all the best men will be here to either view or participate in the competitions or the tournament." Suki started, placing her hands on her lap, "It is of vital importance that we get the number of hands we need. We were hoping that you could help us out in this endevour."

"I've noticed that there is a good competition running over back a few blocks from here. The monkey pole competition. It seems excellent for finding men that can run up and down the masts and are comfortable with heights. I was thinking that it would be an excellent place to convince a few men to sign up and serve their emperor." Suki continued, looking around the busy tavern at all the near drunks, "However, I understand that not everyone is so willing to join and they often need a little convincing. If that means making a press at the end of the festival, then that's what has to happen. I'd like to avoid that however, because the best hands are always the hands that are happy to be there. Don't you agree Mr. Queek?"

By now, he knew what she wanted. Queek listened anyway. It was rather interesting, how she had become businesslike all of a sudden. When she had mentioned the monkey poles, he nodded, half-interested. Side attractions like that did not faze him anymore. Still, he did have some advice. But before he gave it...

"Mmm... what do you expect me to do, then? I can't help you if I don't know what I am to be of use in. Sure, you're looking for able-bodied hands, and ones that are willing, but what do you think I can do for you? Information? Scouting? Being annoying? Give me specifics."

Suki was a little taken aback. She thought what she was getting at was quite clear but obviously she was wrong.

"I'm sorry, I thought you were familiar with the way things worked with the navy. My apologies, I must have not been clear enough. I can sometimes assume people know what I am speaking of without having told them." Suki said, apologetically and trying not to ruffle his feathers, "I need you to do some scouting. Get some names, addresses, and speak to the men about making some good, steady money once the tournament is over. If they seem very keen, take them down to the ship and make them sign on the spot. They can become hands right then and there. I've heard you can be quite convincing."

Suki didn't say that once they did that, the men that signed up would be legally required to stay on the boat as hands of the ship. She didn't like being sneaky like that but the navy had to do what it had to do. With the possibility that they would have to leave harbour at any time during the tournament if action was required, the Constance had to have a full ship of hands. If they couldn't get them this way, she and other lieutenants along with a few marines would go out and do a full press of men. It was just the way it was done.

"My colleague, Lieutenant Haimet who is not here at the moment because he's procuring our lodgings, and I will be in regular touch with you through out the festival. We'll be staying at the "White Swan" for the duration of the festival, if you need to contact us on short notice." Suki stated, trying to lead the conversation to a natural close. She had to get back and meet with Haimet soon, as they were to get prepped for a dinner in which Captain Terrin would introduce them to local dignitaries and men of influence in the festival. The prince wouldn't be there in all likelihood, but Suki wanted to look her best now that she had new articles of clothing coming.

Ah, so he was to be a talent scout, then. Sniff around, find some decent help, sign them up, have them head towards the port. There were different definitions of talent mind you, but the ones they wanted were the ones that were capable of combat. Ones who knew how to fight, and how to fight smart. Or the fighters who were just plain lucky- that had a factor as well.

Queek casually stood, brushing off his pants.

"Yeah, do keep in touch. I'm sure I can bring a few of them to meet you all soon."

He kept the location of their lodgings in mind, also noting that it was a rather intricate place. The White Swan was possibly the best inn and tavern in this city- somewhere that one needed an awful lot of connections to get a room, much less enter.

No place for him, in other words. But he was given the location, and they would be there if he needed them, so he wouldn't complain about it.

"Do take care. Times can be rather rough around here. That money in your front pocket may not be there anymore, come day's end."

Just a friendly piece of advice.

"Thank you. I will keep that in mind." Suki said keeping her demeanour of cordiality, standing as well, "I appreciate your discretion and understanding in these matters."

Suki shook hands with Mr. Queek and left the tavern. It bothered her that he knew about the money in her breast pocket but she supposed that men such as him were able to tell these kind of things immediately. She was right to dispose of most of the purse immediately, but she did need to get the money to a secure location or find a way to send it back to the Constance.

--- Time passes ---

Back at the White Swan the clothes she had been fitted for were already completed and waiting for her with the Inn keepers wife. The woman had kindly laid them out on Suki's bed in a very nice fashion. Suki was holding up her fancy dress top to herself and inspecting it in the mirror when there was a knock on her door.

"Come in!" Suki called, quickly sweeping up her clothes and hanging them in the closet.

"Mai!" Haimet exclaimed as he came into her room through the adjoining door between their rooms, "I hear from the Inn Keeper's wife that you got some new fancy dress clothes for the dinner tonight. How on the bright blue sea did you afford them?!"

"What? How did you know that I ordered new dress clothes?" Suki asked, surprised at his knowledge of her personal affairs without her telling him about them first.

"Well, they were actually delivered to me first. The Inn Keeper's wife thought they were for me but when I saw them I knew they were too small for me, so they couldn't be for anyone else but you." Haimet said, looking towards the slightly opened closet, "Did you come into some sort of coin?"

"Yes, I managed to get a little bit of a purse from a local competition here." Suki said humbly, going back to her closet and closing the door all the way.

"Was is the monkey poles by chance?" Haimet asked, taking a seat in the chair by the small writing desk by the window.

"I'm afraid so, yes." Suki admitted, slightly embarrassed to be admitting it. She couldn't lie and say no though, that wouldn't be honorable.

"That was YOU?!" Haimet exclaimed, laughing heartily, "I should have known! They've been talking about some woman sailor who trounced all the men at the monkey poles in something like ten seconds. It's big news at the pub downstairs. They're all speculating that you'll be in the grand tournament and put all the men to shame."

"Oh no, that will definitely NOT be happening. And it was only 15 seconds. Not 10." Suki said, turning a little red with embarrassment, "It was a mistake. I got swept up in the moment. I'm a sailor, through and through. Not an imperial guard. But it did give me a little money to get that lance I needed to get and a few items of clothing."

"Don't be so modest, man!" Haimet said, leaning back and putting his hands on top of his head in a leisurely manner, "I just hope that you've got some coin left over for us poor sailors back on the Constance."

Sukie only smiled at this comment and Haimet could guess that a fair amount of her winnings had already arrived back at the Constance.

"Ok, well I just wanted to check in with you. I need to put on my fancy dress clothes and make sure I'm presentable. You need to put on those fancy new clothes and brush out that bird's nest of yours." Haimet said, standing up with a laugh.

"Alright I'll see you in an hour." Suki said, closing the door after him.

Speaking of the tournament...

Imperial Gardens, Inner Xi'an Palace

The lei tai.

A two foot high stage with an area of twenty-five square feet, raised and built from the very stones of the mountain itself. Thus, it was a permanent fixture within the gardens, which were a sight to behold as delicate flower petals rained softly to the ground. A set of stairs on the eastern side of the stage was the only safe way onto the platform, but it certainly wasn't the only way off.

Despite the scenery, the competition every year was fierce. Those who stepped on the lei tai did so for one reason, and one reason only.

To fight, and to win.

But contrary to how most lei tai fights went, losing did not mean complete failure. On the contrary- what was watched was not victory or defeat, though there were rewards for victory. What was watched for was form. Speed. Power. Control. Ferocity.

The Emperor was looking for new guards. What better way than a tournament? And even if one did not make it into the guards, there were plenty more who were looking for a good strong warrior. This wasn't just entertainment- it was for the prosperity and longevity of the Empire itself.

Thus, the twentieth Tournament of Dragons was set to take place.

"Hoshimi-sama!"

The pretty maid ran towards Hoshimi as she stepped through the bathing house doors, all but flinging herself towards the priestess. "You came! You're going through with it?!" Firing a million and one questions at the woman child in the way that only a child could. For that was exactly what Minako was. A child. Almost a woman, but not quite, and only children were allowed to serve in the bathing houses.

Hoshimi was short, even for a Chiazuite so she was on equal terms with the 13 year old as she stood and embraced the girl in a rather informal fashion. "Hush, Minako. Yes. I'm going through with it, but we must be quiet."

The girl bobbed her head and looked at Hoshimi. "Milady, we must get you cleaned and dressed. Your kimono has already arrived, but you must be cleaned." She helped Hoshimi strip out of her traveling clothes and into the warm springs that were artificially created for the bathing houses.

Water, the one place Hoshimi felt completely at home in.

*~*~*

A few hours later found Hoshimi outside the door to the place where the dignitary dinner for the festival was to be held. The petition ceremony wasn't till later, and to be honest, this dinner would provide Hoshimi with a perfect alibi until she revealed herself to the Emperor.

She was dressed as she should be, in the gowns of the high priestess of the Leviathan Temple. And seer to the Emperor himself. Her under kimono was of a silver color that matched her odd and out of place eyes, and the over kimono was the blue of the oceans that were embroidered with silver silk Leviathans. Her hair was done up in an elaborate hairstyle that only an oracle or royalty could mimic. Loops of hair, bound with precious elemental stones that symbolized the magic and beauty of the orient.

"High Priestess and Personal Oracle of His Imperial Highness Zen Mao, Mizano Hoshimi." The guard announced her as if she were one of the nobility. In fact, as priestess, she was higher on the hierarchy, though she never took that seriously. Her last name like all of the priestess of the Leviathan before her, that of the character for water. She was not of her family line any longer, but the Leviathan Spirit. To do with as he so led her.
