haha :) Well it doesn't work for everyone because some people really like certain foods...but what I first looked up was carbs vs fat. My dad was doing the Atkins diet, and while it worked wonders I couldn't cut out all those foods.
Your body will burn carbs before it burns fat, and it takes a longer time to burn carbs, so I immediately made a list of carb friendly foods. (if you go to this site, click on any of the phases and click on what you can eat in this phase you'll get a list of good food
Jump Starting Weight Loss) What I didn't know was that a lot of vegetables and fruit have a TON of carbs (not to say that these items are bad for you, but if you're trying to lose weight it might hinder that process). So for example munching on carrots and apples all day isn't the best idea since they both pack a lot of carbs. (all berries and generally all green veggies are the best options). Another thing that I noticed (and what made grocery time easier) was that anything that was listed as "Fat Free" or "Low in Fat" were REALLY high in Carbs! I immediately switched to "full fat" or "normal" foods.
My biggest problem was time and money. I didn't have a BBQ and I didn't have time to make great steaks and salads every night and I didn't have the budget to buy all the expensive meat and fruit (berries are killer expensive out here). This is why I never got rid of rice...it's loaded with carbs and you can make a lot at one time, but it's not terrible for you (especially if you're eating good rice and not just that plain 5 minute stuff). Pasta is easy to make too, but the wheat hurts, so I changed to Rice Pasta (you can get this at most grocery stores). I found chili recipes (or soups/stews) that I liked and could make in my crock pot (aka big portions at time to store in the fridge for those days that you're running late).
When I went out and bought fruit and veggies, whatever could be cut up right away, I did because it's a lot easier to grab something that's ready to eat than it is to get something that you have prep first.
That was how I started...after that process got easier, and keep in mind this could take months before it's easy and natural for you, (finding the right foods, testing ones I hadn't) I started incorporating other aspects into my diet.
Eventually I started making all my foods - I used to buy the pre-packaged things like hamburger helper and so on. That stuff is SO easy to make (and it's actually a lot cheaper to buy the ingredients to make it) so I'd make everything from scratch. But again - in BIG portions so that I didn't have to slave away in the kitchen all the time.
The easiest thing and best thing I've done was buying a blender, a juicer and a bunch of ice trays. (The juicer doesn't have to be a really expensive one). One of the easiest ways to get your nutrients (nutrients from veggies and fruits btw heal your body and help get rid of problems) is by extracting them. If you were to eat 50 cups of broccoli, your jaw would be sore and you'd probably never want to see broccoli again. But if you juice 50 cups of broccoli, you get the nutrients instantly and it takes less than 5mins to drink it all. Before you go and juice all your veggies and drink it let me warn you that it taste HORRENDOUS. (Some people like it but I'm convinced those people are idiots with 0 taste buds). On top of that, if you buy a lot of veggies they will eventually go bad - you could freeze them, but you can't juice anything that's frozen. Blending vegetables is gross because it gets chunky and it's hard to swallow. Luckily I've come up with a solution (after losing a lot of veggies Dx) After I hit up the market and buy a ton of veggies and fruit I'd juice everything and put the juice into ice trays to put in the freezer. It sounds like a lot of work, but it literally takes about 1 hr or 2 once a week (or however often you go through your ice cubes).
Then every morning I make myself a smoothie with fruit and frozen cubes of vegetable juice (the juice I extracted myself from all the veggies)! (Oranges and Apples are also better juiced - it's easier to blend spinach than it is to juice it, and since spinach is so mild it tastes like nothing so you can load it into your blender without worries!)
While this sounds like a huge lifestyle change (it is btw), keep in mind that these are SLOW processes, the more you try to change instantly the harder it is and the more likely you are to fail. Little steps that stick are better than big steps that fail.
As I mentioned, I'm still in the process of losing weight. Right now I'm cleaning up my system. I use all vegan products (shampoo, condition, face wash, body wash and so on) and I just cut meat out of my diet (I'm not really a vegetarian, a friend of mine told me I couldn't do it so I am...it's been about a month, it's a neat cleanse - if you do this, you have to replace your nutrients somehow - I eat a lot of tofu and beans). I go for bike rides a few times a week (the first time I got on a bike I couldn't even last 5mins and my ass was bruised for like a week it was BRUTAL...now I can go easily for about 45mins, but it took over a month to build that).
Finally, something that helps INSANELY (more than food and exercise) is your happiness. I got rid of every single negative person from my facebook, I dropped friends that were negative and depressed all the time (the ones that were angry at the world for no effin reason) and I started doing the things I like, instead of just dreaming about it. I used to look in the mirror and see fat, now I see healthy and strong. If you work at your diet, your life and your happiness you can truly make a change, it just takes the commitment because you WANT to, not because you think you should. For example people who smoke - a lot of people LIKE smoking so they won't be able to quit. You have to hate it to want to quit it. In conclusion, remember that just because your scale might say over weight doesn't mean you're unhealthy.
Sorry that was so long @___@!
