---------- Post added 05-02-2014 at 05:33 PM ----------

What's it look like is it like active yeast or something?

Yes, it's an active yeast. So each feeding is 1/2 Cup of starter, 1 cup of water and 1 cup of bread flour. You can toss or use the rest of the starter (by the time it gets around to the feeding there's generally about 3 cups in the bowl) and bread uses 1 cup, bagels use 2 cups.

So isn't the starter dry to start? Wow I am more interested in the starter then the bread!!! I want to bake... But I should clean first... If I clean chances are I won't have time for cooking /sigh

We started our stater with like a cup of beer and a cup of flour...There may have been more to it, it's been a while. But the starter is always wet-ish. If you do it with out the beer you start with water and flour and place it by the window so yeast cultures from your area can grow. I'd say it has about a pancake batter consistency when it's ready to be fed and a cupcake batter consistency when it's just been fed.

After I posted it I went looking for pictures. I found many... But they all had pictures of packet showing "Alaskian Sour Dough Starter" or some such... I wonder if I could find it here...

If it weren't hitting mid nineties here I'd be so up for cooking.

We tried the packet the first time we made sourdough, but it just tasted like yeast dough. It had no sour in it at all. Kept that starter alive for 3 months and no change in flavor so we scrapped it and tried again with the beer. The sourdough that beat ours at the state fare last year had no sour flavor. I have no idea how they beat ours, because ours is amazing. Alas.
There's supposed to be a way to make a gluten free sourdough using red...something or another yeast from a packet. I haven't done it up yet because the idea of more work is horrifying right now. xD Keeping one starter and one cat alive (as well as 3 kids) is more than enough for me right now!

Lol I have 4 kids, 288 baby plants, one cat and one dog... I need more lol...do you feed the starter beer everytime? Can you feed it butter milk or butter milk immitation (lemon in regular milk)?

It only gets fed bread flour and water. No beer, no milk etc. The yeast eats the bread flour and drinks the water so to speak and that's what the live off of. The sour taste in sourdough is actually what they excrete from eating (okay, it's what Scott told me, and I believed him, I've never looked it up myself) The beer is only used to get the yeast from the beer to start the yeast culture.

Oh now I am confused...

For yeast if I am remembering right. We use it for several reasons. As it dies it creates bubbles which create the airy holes in our bread but if I remember right we are essentially using it for its fast baby making and death rates and the gasses it creates... don't quote me though

I suppose I should look it up myself. xD What I do know, so long as we keep feeding it flour and water the culture stays alive. (:

>.> We're a special couple of people. lol. But baking and starter and yeast are interesting! Besides, it's always good to learn new things isn't it?

I want to learn how to knit. Though I should finish learning how to crochet first. >.> My crappy stitches need help.

Practice makes perfect.... I came to a stand still with my knitting... I have like a ton of new stitches to learn in this next set of rows and also need to learn how to do active stitches on this row so I can pick them up later and do the other flap. Once I figure them out though this will officially have been the quickest I have knitted something... if I can figure them out in will be done tomorrow which will be 3 days!

And yes definately good to learn new things :)

I'm going to watch another episode of Game of Thrones with Scott tonight and fold laundry. Why does laundry never go away? I should get back to crafting etc at night. I tried to do sewing projects while watching tv a few times...but my sewing machine is pretty loud. lol

I wound up only having one episode of "call the midwife" left on Netflix so I ran out of things to watch by myself and Dillon fell asleep sitting up... So yeah...

But I think I botched the new technique I am learning... So I will be undoing it and trying again later

I love it! It is very well put together. I seriously was wondering through most of it if babies are ACTUALLY being delivered on the show... I know that is silly but some even look like they have vernix on the its cool. Itbhad a couple of "severe tear up moments" and does touch on abortion and infant loss. But it is very very good!

I am being very very stubborn... I don't WANT to have to clean for my mothers day celebration... But Dillon won't clean solidly... He is such a slacker... :/ I will have to tomorrow or it will never get finished.

I'm not cleaning or cooking tomorrow. I refuse. But then, I'm also not cleaning or cooking today...nor am I going anywhere. >.> I'm just going to hang out at home in pajamas, or in the front yard in the sunshine and enjoy the day.
