Mwahahaha, finals before Christmas are good. Especially since I can start with a clean slate after the break. Only problem is since its before Christmas, and since I work at a store, it gets harder to get time for studying versus if I had time during break to study.

But perhaps that's a blessing, judging from what my friends tell me. Are they really that bad?

Yeah, they are pretty tough depending on the subject and professor. Some give you an exam on everything taught through-out the course while others will only test you on the last portion (basically making the final just a normal exam).
