"... Mother..." chains rattle for the first time in ages, "... dearest Mother..." the rusted iron groans in protest as stone cracks, "I can smell your weakness..." stone cracks and darkness bleeds from the earth, "You're so sick Mother..." the haunted fountains waters stir, "Don't worry Mother dear, I'm coming home... I'll take care of you, I promise." The chains break, the stone breaks, and the fountain returns to a still state but the water turns black as Ink.
Hero looked up suddenly as he felt... cold. Looking around he shrugged before continuing on towards the house. He had been gone for a few weeks, spending time in the attic just trying to clean it up for Mother since it was an absolute mess up there. Finally, though, he had succeeded in cleaning up the attic, a monumental feat considering their size, and he looked forward to a heroes welcome for overcoming such an obstacle. As he pondered that thought for a few seconds he sighed, wishing there was something he could do that would be truly worthy of a heroes welcome, like defeating a dragon or something.

Holding out a hand, she pressed her pale fingers against Mouse's. "We all live here in the dollhouse. It's been a noisy day because of the wedding. I'm surprised you don't . . . know."
With a delicate frown, Namine looked over Mouse again in curiosity. She didn't recall ever meeting this one. "Do you want something to eat? You're very . . .thin."

((LOL! It's fine! I totally forgot that I was planning on responding to little Miss Mouse.))
"Calla," John's weak hand rested on Calla's finger, and his pale eyes closed as though it took all of his energy just to breathe. He didn't appear to be listening to the woman's words, but his eyes opened again when she mentioned living "here" in years prior. "Here?" He carefully looked to Mother, his brow knit with a frown. "Mother?"
He'd . . . disappeared? Snow tried to understand, but his mind wasn't putting pieces together easily. It was hard to think . . . especially since he couldn't recall any connections to help him put the situation into reasonable thoughts. "That doesn't make sense," he muttered, his hand dropping away from Calla's. Snow's breath was shallow, but he was staying awake.
"Not much will, for now." Mother smiled sympathetically before moving toward her chair. There was a large box near that, and she knelt to carefully open the lid. Inside were various bits of clothing that she'd given to dolls over the years. "I'm going to give him some clothes. Hopefully he'll regain his strength quickly." She rummaged through until she'd found a few pairs of pants and some shirts.
Tucking them into the corner of the box, Mother looked over the doll's gray-lined features worriedly. "I will see if there's anything we can do to make him feel better."
John slowly looked over to where the clothes had been stashed. It was like he was perceiving things far after they happened. He had trouble keeping up with the words being said. His very mind was sluggish. "Calla," he breathed, "It's so familiar."
"I'm afraid there's nothing we can do for him right now." Mother met Calla's gaze and smiled a bit, sitting down in her chair heavily. So much excitement that day had really done a number on her. "Keep an eye on Seth, please. If he isn't feeling better by morning, let me know."
|
Mouse looked in the distance with a faraway look "Oh, a doll! I suppose I knew that, but to hear it said aloud..." Mouse said as she shifted slightly. "And a wedding... how wonderful! Who're the soon-to-be's?" Mouse looked about for the first time, realizing that she had been lost in her own thoughts for so long that she had hardly noticed the flurry of activity in the room. As she observed with a new-found interest, her stomach grumbled slightly. "And... for your offer on sustinence... do you have any... Gouda cheese?"

Calla wondered if maybe she was talking too much. She did that sometimes, though she wasn't entirely sure why. It was an impulse she supposed. A need to fill the silence if it got to be too much. She was happy to hear that John was at least a little hungry. Smiling, Calla brought him into the kitchen and set the box down gently.
Someone had made pancakes already, and they were still warm from what she could tell. Calla didn't know the names of the newest dolls. She couldn't tell one face from another, besides her sister, Zarrah and the two brothers. And John of course. Shaking her head slightly, Calla put a few pancakes on a different plate and brought them over to the recovering doll.
"Did you want to eat in here or upstairs. It's up to you. Whatever you want, I'll do my best to make it happen. I promise. And...don't try to think too hard about everything. I'm sure it will all come back to you eventually. Just give it time." Calla understood how it felt to be so confused. Of course, she had gone down the dark road instead of the brightly lit one. She had convinced Life to poison her own sister. She had tried to get Isis to join her, no matter what happened. She had even manipulated Seth's soul into hurting Isis a little bit by having him pose as Lost.
Those dark memories and secrets were things that she thought about often and it was a part of herself that she wished didn't exist but there was nothing for her to do about it. Instead, Calla had to focus on winning Seth over a little more and to make sure that he was okay after bringing his first doll to life again.

"Cheese?" Namine giggled quietly, nodding. "We have every cheese you can think of." She turned toward the kitchen, waiting for Mouse to follow. "The dolls that got married were Lost, Isis, Zarrah and Life. They've been here for a long while." The blonde glanced out the kitchen window to see a male walking around outside [Hero]. "It's the first wedding we've had here. I didn't even know dolls could get married, but I suppose it makes sense. We all fall in love, right?"
The delicate doll reached for the fridge handle, pulling it open with her weight and smiling. "Do you see your cheese in here, Mouse?"
-
((:XD Mother won't notice that Ink Stain is coming back . . . so I won't have her respond to it.))

Snow had managed to sit up by the time Calla returned with the pancakes. "The room, please." He didn't put much more effort into talking as he rested against the side of the box, looking spent already. His colorless eyes moved to Namine and Mouse as they entered the kitchen, but he didn't watch them for long. The food took his attention quite swiftly.
She was right. This red-headed girl was right. Time would help him . .. even if he didn't remember, he could rebuild. Snow could start over with a clean slate. "Have you . . . always been so tall?" he asked quietly, looking up at Calla as she neared him once more.

Calla smiled down at the two dolls as they entered the kitchen. She stopped to let them pass, not in a big hurry to go by. SHe didn't want to accidentally crush them. She soon made her way back to the doll now sitting up in the bed she had made him and smiled a sad smile. Calla wondered if she should tell the doll that she had actually been like him. Was it too soon, and would it just end up making her sound crazy? Besides, she didn't want to alienate herself.
With a small sigh, Calla gently lifted the box, making sure not to jostle it as she left the kitchen. She supposed she might as well get it all out into the open. "No, I was never this tall before. I...I was...just like you John. I was once a doll, living here with everyone else." She paused for a moment, remembering how foolish she had been in her last days.
"Mother's son had drowned in the fountain out back. He and I had been inseparable back then. When he died...I guess I became angry and confused so I rebelled against mother. About a month later, my sister Isis was supposed to arrive. I was told I had to stay in the house and not leave the yard. Mother had kept her at her one house just down the path, and when she refused to let me go to my sister, I went out to the fountain and cried. I started to walk along the edge of the fountain and accidentally fell in myself. It felt as if something had grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let me go. I died that day...." she whispered quietly, averting her eyes away from the doll.
"I've done some terrible things while wandering in limbo. I actually persuaded a doll to poison my sister so I could have her back with me again." Calla's eyes teared up at this, but she shook her head lightly. "I'm not sure how Mother did it, but she brought both Seth and I back. Only...I somehow came back as a human." Calla ended her story there. She knew she sounded crazy.

"Just like me?" the question was quiet, and he leaned back to hear the words. Somehow he knew she was telling the truth. He'd gotten the impression that Calla was different . . . and he wasn't sure if he remembered her being a doll, but it seemed to fit.
"Oh," Snow whispered, listening to the story being told. He watched Calla speak with a weary interest, a light frown slipping over his features as she started on about the fountain. He shivered at the thought of it all, and lowered his gaze momentarily. When he looked back up, she'd averted her eyes. She's ashamed. As Snow's pale eyes lingered on the woman's face, he saw tears glittering in her eyes.
There was a small movement, and Snow lifted a heavy arm to press his hand against part of Calla's. "And after everything, you're still sad." His touch was as cold as the fountain's water from which he'd come. "It sounds so . . . " Snow trailed off, his arm dropping back to his side. "Strange." Ridiculous. He tried not to look skeptical, shaking his pale hair from his face with a small movement.
His stomach clenched as he scented the food again. "Are we almost there?" he asked, forgetting social graces and being patient.
((:XD I'm trying to remind myself to make Snow a bit more rude. I need a character that's just cynical and skeptical, rude and somewhat untrusting. Sadly . . . John is partially that way, but he's taking a liking to Calla already. I guess we'll see how it ends up. . . .))

((Aww, I like John how he is. But I can see where you want to take him. If he gets there, he gets there!))
Calla jumped in surprise when she felt his col hand touch her arm. Looking down, Calla gave him another sad smile. "I guess...I am. I'm just surprised that I've been forgiven for what I've done. That, and I like Seth a lot, but he...well he doesn't, no I'm sure he likes me, but he just doesn't show it very well. He's changed a little bit now."
Looking at his expression, Calla knew that John Snow didn't believe her. Or at least he didn't seem to want to. "Yes, I do suppose it's strange, but I'm telling you the truth, I swear. Now ton a chair. ""hen, enough talk of all this, let's get you settled down so you can eat and then rest a little more."
Anything to change the subject. She gently tapped on Seth's door as he entered, having left the door open a crack. He seemed to be asleep still, which was good she supposed. Calla set the box down on her knee after taking a seat on a chair. "There you go." she whispered to him, handing him the plate of pancakes. She had grabbed a doll sized one just for him.

(( We'll see. ;) I might just keep him . . . well, he isn't exactly happy. He's just too weak to state his opinion! ^_^'))
People changed. That much Snow could recall without memory. As Calla carried the box into Seth's room, the doll stayed silent. People might change, but it still sounded absurd that a doll could come back as a human. He silently nodded when Calla wanted to change the subject. It wasn't something they needed to talk about, and Snow was a bit too dizzy to do much hard thinking.
When Calla had sat down and handed him the food, Snow took the doll-sized plate carefully. For a moment he looked unsure, but his hunger soon told him just how to react. Without syrup, and without a fork, Snow slowly began to tear pieces off the pancakes to eat. His expression wasn't happy, per say, but he certainly looked happier.
It took him a painful amount of time to finish one pancake before he could move on to the next.
-
Seth heard Calla return to the room, but he chose not to move. It wasn't that he wasn't feeling well, but that he wanted to know what she'd do while he supposedly couldn't hear her. From the sound of it, the doll was awake. The thought brought feelings of happiness and regret into his heart, dueling emotions that Seth wasn't sure he wanted. He felt fine physically . . . in fact, he was feeling pretty fantastic. He wasn't even tired anymore.
Slowly opening his eyes, he watched Calla as she looked down at the box in her lap. That must have been where the doll was.

The lights dimmed as the shadows lengthened within Mother's room as a voice called out to her, "Helloooo Mooootherrrrr." Coming out from behind a vase on the Mother's writing desk as Ink Stain stepped into sight, his steps leaving a dark footprint as a macabre smile came over his face as he said, "Long time no see, Mother dear. Tis the return of the prodigal son, is it not?" he held out his arms, fingers lengthening like black tentacles, dripping ink as he said, "Would you not embrace your child?"
The door of the doll house slammed open as Hero entered with a dramatic pose, shouting, "Greetings one and all, your Hero has arrived!"

Mother frowned as the lights dimmed, and she lifted her gaze worriedly. The last time that had happened. . . .
The voice calling to her confirmed her fears. The old woman closed her eyes, steadying herself. She hadn't seen him since she was just a child. "Stain." Her brown eyes turned to him as she set her book aside. He looked no different: he was just as corrupt as he had been the day she'd first seen him. That was many years ago, but the corruption had only worsened since then. "You're free." It was unfortunate that the creature was free.
"I would not. You know my opinion of you, Ink Stain." She'd renamed the blackened doll as a child, and the name truly defined him. He was a stain on the world, a visible expression of corruption and darkness that Mother could not destroy. "You are no prodigal son. You only return for your twisted desires." The woman glanced toward the door, wondering if anyone would be close enough to hear her if she called out.
This creature was a vision from her nightmares. As a child she'd seen him, and ever since then she'd fought to keep him hidden away from the world. He was the essence evil.
((:XD Hope that was better!))
-
Namine stepped away from the fridge, moving to pull a couple plates down from the cupboard. She was glad to see Calla take the last of the pancakes. It was good to know that her food could help out around the house. As curious as she was about the mysterious doll in the box, she was more interested in Mouse as she looked for cheese.
Just as she sat at the counter, her ankles crossed under her chair, the door burst open. Squeaking in surprise, the blonde nearly tumbled from her seat. With her blue eyes wide, the girl looked back to see Hero dramatically standing in the doorway. A weak smile spread over her face as she waved slightly, making sure her drawing pad was still on the counter. Sadly, her pencil was already rolling its way across the kitchen floor.
Slipping out of her chair, she stepped over to pick it up. "Hello," she said quietly, smiling as she picked up her pencil. It had stopped near Hero's feet.

(May want to edit the 'day she had created him' part Mademoiselle)
Ink Stain let out a sharp bark of laughter that seemed to come from every shadow in the room as he said, "Oh Mother, how I have missed you so these past TWENTY YEARS, TRAPPED IN THAT SMALL DARK HOLE!" As he shouted the last the darkness the defined his features seemed to ripple across his being before calming after a few precious seconds as he breathed heavily, seemingly exhausted. He staggered a bit as he walked to the other end of the desk where Mother kept her quills and ink pots, saying, "Don't look so alarmed Mother mine, I can't take you now. Being gone for so long has left me weakened, I'll need rest before I can take you, mind, body, and soul. This should help speed the process a bit, " with that, he clenched his fist and drove it into one of the ink pots, causing it to spill out, almost reaching the surface of the desk before flowing, instead, into Ink Stain himself, adding greater definition to his features. He took a deep breath before letting out a relived sigh, saying, "I heard there's a wedding to be had, mother mine. If I were you, I'd rally your forces, tell them that I'm here to kill and corrupt all of them, but that would certainly put a dampener on the festivities, wouldn't it? Tell them now, tell them later, don't tell them at all, it won't matter in the end." With that, he turned and walked into the shadows, disappearing. The lights in the room came back to normal, the shadows receded, and Ink Stain's voice echoed through the room as he said, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a princess to go visit."
Hero looked down into Namine's eyes and smiled as he said, "Ah, greetings Namine, it is good to see you again after these last few months. I'll have you know, I have finally triumphed over the dreaded mess that was in the attic! I'm sure Mother and the others shall congratulate me on my great victory. So, how have things been around here, fair princess?"

((Whoops. And here I thought I'd weeded all that out! LOL! Fixed! Now, instead of "created" it's "seen." ;)))
Mother stared at the empty ink well, her brown eyes wide. She'd been so terrified of Stain when she was a child. Closing her eyes for a moment, she tried to wake herself up. It wasn't long before she knew this wasn't a dream. The woman stood, grimacing at the pain in her legs. She needed to speak with Seth and Calla. There had to be a way to keep everyone safe without being frightened into a panic.
-
Namine's blue eyes brightened, and a blush slowly formed on her cheeks. "You finished the attic? That's good news." Her light laugh followed his final question. "Princess?" Her blush darkened, and she tucked her pencil behind her ear with a sheepish smile. "Things have been good and peaceful. We had a wedding this morning." The girl motioned to Mouse, who was still by the fridge. "This is Mouse. I think she's new."
Then she headed back to the counter, hopping up into her barstool again. "Would you like something to eat, Hero?" The girl smiled more widely now, watching the other doll with her cheeks stained pink. "I'm sure all the work left you hungry." She flipped open her sketch pad, swiftly looking down at it. There were many other dolls drawn there, she knew. Not one of them looked like Hero, though.
Beginning to draw, she glanced up at the male a few times.

Hero smiled, bowing as he said, "I could certainly use a meal, but I would never burden you with the task of preparing my meal. I shall make my own meal, milady, but I thank you for the offer, but first," Hero strode towards Mouse with a very 'Prince Charming' grin and took one of her hands in his, bowing over it, saying, "A pleasure to meet you Lady Mouse, my is Hero, at your service should you need a... hero. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have just returned from my quest and am famished." With that, Hero set to preparing a meal for himself, glad all the dishes were kept in the same places as before he left. Before long, he had eggs, zzzzz, and toast going on the stove with some cheese sliced on the counter next to him for a breakfast style sandwich.
In one of the remote corners of the house, there was a loud snap. A mousetrap under a cabinet had just killed on of it's prey, the creature's neck broken by the crushing force. "Pooooooor creeeeeeeaturrrrrre. You shaaaaaaall serrrrrve myyyyy purpooooose." Ink Stain stepped out of the shadow and lifted the iron bar with one hand and pulled the mouse away from the trap with the other, tossing it's limp body to the side. Another loud snap echoed through the room as he let the bar go and walked over to the body, dragging the mousetrap with him and reaching towards the mouse as his fingers lengthened into long, sharp claws, saying, "But first, some modifications."

Calla watched the doll eat and smiled lightly. She was sure he was thinking that she was absolutely insane, and if all of the past events she had just described hadn't of happened to her, Calla was positive she wouldn't have believed herself either. With a small sigh, she glanced over at Seth's closed eyes and flushed lightly before turning her attention back on the doll.
She was still worried that Seth wasn't okay. Maybe she was over thinking things a little too much, but she loved the other human too much not to worry. It seemed that though John was tired still, he had an appetite on him which was definitely good. "If there's anything I can do to help you get more comfortable, just let me know." she said softly, oblivious to the fact that Seth was now watching her, wide awake.

Namine smiled as she watched Hero prepare his own food. Her blue eyes returned to her sketch book as she lifted it from the counter, her pencil suddenly moving swiftly. Hero was a good subject: he was gentlemanly and tall, dramatic and had a big smile. The doll highlighted all these things as she drew Hero, constantly glancing up at him as she did.
In the end, it was a nearly-perfect rendition of him, drawn in pencil. Staring at the picture for a few moments, Namine nodded. This one would be a good memory.
-
"I'll let you know," Snow mumbled, returning to his food. Once his attention was taken, he was focused on just the pancakes. It took the remaining bit of his energy just to chew and lift the food to his lips. As he ate, he glanced to Seth. He could just see the youth over the rim of the box from where he was in Calla's lap.
"Do you believe that people can hear you when they're asleep?"
Seth had to force himself not to smile. He wasn't asleep. He'd closed his eyes again while listening. Now, though, the teen slowly opened his eyes again, looking at Calla as she sat beside his bed. Her red (I think she's got red hair, right? :XD) hair was glowing in the dim light from the lamp by the bed, and her expression was full of worry. Do you really care that much? Little did Seth know that his question mirrored Snow's.
It was many moments later, after Calla's response, when he stretched his arms over his head slowly. "I don't know. I haven't been asleep ever since you came in, so you can't test your theory now." He looked at the box in Calla's lap with a frown on his face, still unsure of what he felt for the doll. "So . . . you're the doll, then?"
Snow's expression changed suddenly. As though he'd been doused with cold water, the gray-skinned male narrowed his eyes and nodded once. "Yes." His answer was purposefully blunt, and he met Seth's eyes with his own colorless gaze steadily. The plate he was holding was slowly set aside. "You brought me back?"
"Yes, I did." Seth's brown eyes narrowed as well, and the two regarded one another for many moments. "I'm surprised it worked."
"As am I.''
Seth looked to Calla. "Have you been taking care of him this entire time?"

(Yes, her hair is red. n.n)
Calla smiled slightly. "I don't know. I think...it might register in their sub-conscience. Maybe."
The red head jumped slightly in surprise when Seth spoke. Her cheeks grew hot as he spoke, saying that he had been awake since they had come back. Had he seen her when she had looked at him? Calla had always worried about Seth, even when she had been a doll. Of course, back then things hadn't been like they were now. It seemed like before they had always been so carefree, unlike now.
She listened as the two males conversed, only looking at Seth when he spoke to her. "I...yes. When you came back to go and sleep, I went and found a box and made him a bed. I brought him to Mother and he woke up just a little while after that. We stopped in the kitchen for something to eat before coming here. We didn't wake you, did we Seth?" Calla knew she would feel guilty if she head woken him up, for she already felt it start to form.

"You didn't wake me," Seth shook his head, brushing dark hair from his eyes. It was so hard to ignore the look on her face. She was blaming herself for his discomfort . . . again. "I've been up for a little while." Seth looked at the doll in Calla's lap for a few more moments before shaking his head. "I feel . . . good. I feel like I just woke up from a long night of sleep." He shrugged as though the strange weariness from earlier had been unimportant.
Seth sat up, avoiding looking at Snow (who was giving him an awfully cold look). "You're blushing." He bluntly pointed out the warmth on Calla's cheeks, and his brown eyes widened slightly in response. You do care. You care . . . as you always have. Then why was it so hard to return the feeling? Certainly it wasn't because of her past. They'd been inseparable when he was younger. But . . . things truly had changed since then.

((Seth should totally save Calla from Inky or something!! I don't know...maybe.))
Calla's eyes widened when Seth bluntly stated that she was blushing. Her cheeks seemed to darken a little more, making her look away. She couldn't understand why things were so different now. It didn't make any sense to her. Why couldn't they go back to being such good friends? Like they had been before everything happened. Maybe they needed to slow down and sort of...become friends again. If it was even possible. What if they couldn't be friends again? Calla's eyes burned as that awful thought crossed her mind. She blinked back tears, which left her eyes looking slightly red.
There was a lot of tension in the room, at least that's what it felt like. Not only between herself and Seth, but with John and Seth. The two didn't seem to like each other for some reason, but Calla wasn't as blunt as Seth. She wasn't about to ask, point blank, what was wrong between the two of them. That just wasn't her. With a small sigh, Calla gently took the now empty plate and moved to get up. She left the box where it was. "I'll just go and take this back to the kitchen. Will you two be okay here?"

"We'll be fine," Seth said, giving Calla a brief smile. He saw the look in her eyes. She had been about to cry about something, though about what he couldn't figure. The boy's brown-eyed gaze moved to Snow, and his lips formed a tight line. "Thank you, Calla."
Snow's cold expression softened a bit when Calla took the plate, and he watched her back away. It was when Seth spoke that the doll frowned again, and he leaned back against the box's side more heavily. Sure. We'll be alright. That was a shot in the dark, honestly. "Fine" or "alright" implied that there was some sort of peace between them. There wasn't.
Reaching for the textbook that he'd set aside earlier in the day, Seth stood and tossed it onto the bed. "I have some things to do, so don't worry about me." He glanced to Snow. "I'll find something for him."
"No need," the doll rasped, shaking his head. "I'm going to sleep."
"Good." Seth turned his gaze back to Calla, and he sighed before running a hand through his hair. "Really, Calla. Thank you." If it had been the old days, he would have hugged her close and laughed. Now, though, the teen merely offered a smile before sitting back down and grabbing his textbook.

There was a rapid metallic clicking through the halls of the house as a dark shape crept from shadow to shadow as it made it's way to the room where the doll house lay. From the shadows under a cabinet a single glowing red eye watched the doll house... and waited.
Hero sat down at the table with a pleased grin as he looked at the breakfast style sandwich before him. He took a deep breath in, savoring the smell of the cheese and bacon before taking a bite. Eating quickly, but retaining his grace and manners, it didn't take long before he was finished. He let out a satisfied sigh before taking his dishes to the sink and started cleaning them, saying in a hopeful, "So, any dragons or monsters that need defeating around here since I've been gone?"

Calla nodded and headed for the door. It was unfortunate that the two males couldn't get along. She could tell that there was some tension, and she worried that the two would go at each other once she was gone but there was nothing she could do about it.
"Rest well then John. I'll be back in a little while, so please...try to be civil." The last part she muttered to herself as she left Seth's room and headed down the hall, dirty plate in hand. Calla wondered if she should talk to mother a little bit. Maybe the woman would know what she could do to lessen the awkwardness between them. Calla's expression became sad as she thought about Seth. She loved him, just like she did when she had been a doll. Why was it so different now? She was human, just like him so why couldn't they be the same way. She was still herself...at least she hoped she was still like her old self.
Sighing softly, the red head took to the stairs, debating on whether or not she should talk to mother. The woman needed her rest though, so maybe she would tidy up the kitchen a little bit before seeking her out.

"Always looking for a chance to fulfill your name," Namine smiled, laughing quietly. "We had some mice in the cupboards, Hero." The blonde watched the male clean his dishes, shrugging her thin shoulders. "No dragons, though." Her smile was broad as she held up her sketchpad. "What do you think?"
Sadly, no one heard the noise that Ink Stain made. Not one person seemed to sense the inevitable doom.
((*purrs* Also, the "doll house" is merely a real house. It is a real house that is normal sized, though inside of it there are doll-sized things as well as normal-sized. So, it's a normal house with "two" kitchens for both human and doll.))
It was many moments later when Namine lifted her gaze to see Calla entering the kitchen. From her place at the small counter, the girl waved. "Good morning," she said, her face the natural picture of innocence and contentment. She loved seeing Calla around again, even if she was human.
