I think... after reading more comments... if mene promises to have all advertisements be threads and such instead of "buy skittles" with all the "sure why nots" you might as well do at least a trial run to see if it's popular...
As for popularity... the price doesn't have to be definite... and honestly I'd like if it wasn't. Letting the price fluctuate with demand would make lower prices encourage buying and upping the price, while higher prices reduced it, causing the price to go down. (kinda like a once a week change)

I think it's a pretty cool idea. Sometimes you really want a thread to get noticed and it just...doesn't.
Maybe this could help to make that happen a bit less.

I would probably browse such a forum once in a while. I probably wouldn't be participating at the other end of things, though, since I don't make many threads myself. ^^

I would totally use this feature, even if it is just to browse at the threads on there.

Seems to be split pretty much down the middle between those who would/might use it, and those who say they definitely wouldn't.
Do bear in mind guys that this would be completely code-free and just something I'd put together. It wouldn't be taking away from any other kind of site development. Also, because it was code free there wouldn't be any bidding system for the top of the page positions, things would just be updated as and when people submitted new banners.
I'm really quite interested (and slightly ironically amused) by people saying that they wouldn't use it because if they want to know what's new to do they just go and check the forums, because if that's the case, why do so many contest threads and so on struggle to get enough people to join in regularly?

Why can't you have good conversation and ads? The fact that a thread advertises doesn't make it any less a kind and good topiced thread.

I'll tell you the main reason why I made this thread. It's because when we've written event clues before that lead to places like the Quest Raffle and so on, LOADS of people made comments like, "I didn't know that thread existed!"

Yes, but people stay in the same areas on the site. They have their own little comfort zones and they rarely step out of them. So despite saying that they'd wander the site to see what's new, I honestly don't think that many people actually do that.

I know I wouldn't wander the site looking for things. I sometimes pop into new forums but apart from the threads I regularly haunt I often forget about the others (oopsies)
