@My Friends; If you read this book it's time to discuss it. Just don't quote this post.

I just don't think your friends list would enjoy getting pinged. Did anybody read it? I know a few people did.

Knerd: It's discussion time. zigbigadorlube: Did you get to read it? Would you still like to read it? It's a quick read.

I ended up agreeing to be a beta reader for a friends new book so I haven't had the chance.

I read through it, but I don't know where to start!
Did you come up with any questions, Kirin? You probably know the book best, so I'm sure I'll be able to join in once you start talking about it.

Well, let's see: I think that it was an entertaining read, but it's not one of the better YA novels out there. I would have liked to see a lot more worldbuilding and character development. As it is, the book gives us a basic idea of what's going on, but it glosses over a lot of the major themes. This is good at some points since it lets the reader jump right into the action without bogging us down with details and exposition, but it's tough to get through when the author is trying to show us this really specific fantasy culture.
I suppose this is one time where a book doesn't really work as a stand-alone novel and you need to read the rest of the series in order to see the full picture: There are a lot of loose ends that I hope the Barrowmans deal with in the other books. The magic system and Animare really needs to be hashed out and described more fully so that we can understand how and why certain things happen.
I really like the premise, though. There are a lot of interesting ways that the story could go. It's just a shame that this novel didn't really fulfill its whole potential.

There is more building in the second book, it is a trilogy. Sadly the third book isn't out yet. I need the third book badly.

Do the rest of the books ever explain why Em is the only one whose dreams and fears are animated? Does that mean that she’s the more power Animare of the twins? Because I know the book talks about how her Guardian abilities have developed faster/stronger than Matt’s, so it doesn't really make sense for her Animare powers to also be taking on this extra form, but I'm not sure how else it would be explained.

If I am remembering correctly I think the second book might mention it. Sadly the third book isn't out yet.
