Night sa-rahrah!
I dissected a shark for marinie biology. That was the funnest ever. lol. SO many funny memories from that particular day. And we did a star fish and a sea cucumber. The usual frogs for regular biology but they weren't alive. The live... animals... O_O I'm not at liberty to say actually. But it's.... really .. neat.

It looks like a mushy cucmber thing.. lol. It's really.. weird. Like a big fat worm, wrinkly too. :S It was an experience. The shark though.. the person who was put on my team was complaining about not doing anything so we're like... ok.. you can take the brain out.. Supposed to take it out in one peice.. he minced it. Then my friend smacked him on the head with his sleeve really hard and flung shark brains at him. lol... too funny. That class was the one that I never paid attention in and we made comics all class and the teacher would kill you if you said star fish. It's a sea star she says. lol.. she looked like a horse.. and really really old one.

Well, they're technically not fish, so I guess I can see where she might have been coming from. But common terms for animals are often inaccurate, so I also don't see what the big deal is.
Dishes are done! :) (It took less time than I expected.)

Well, starfish aren't fish, I mean. But they're not stars, either. You should have pointed that out...?

Hehe... we only call them "fish" and label them "sea" because they do live in the ocean. There are many forms and types of life under the waters' surface and not all of them are just blatantly called "fish"
I must be to the intelectual part of being drunk. Either that or I just SOUND smart to myself. lol

Starfish aren't crustaceans. They're echinoderms. Which is a phylum, not a class, but I have no idea about classes of sea stars. oO

Hehe... I don't remember if there is such a great difference in biology and marine biology. As to what you would learn in biology in relation to marine science. You might not have to know the specific categories for every star fish under the sea but then again, it is college. I love learning. I just hate.... math. But I like to write it out. I like writing anything. I just don't like doing it because I do most of it in my head and when you have to write out something really long I'd just rather save paper for drawing on instead :P

Kat: You might not have. *shrugs* In any case, starfish are classified as being in the Phylum Echinodermata. Class Crustacea falls under Phylum Arthropoda, same as insects (Class Insecta) and kin. Easy way to remember that is that "Arthropod" literally means "jointed foot." Insects? Jointed appendages. Lobsters? Ditto. Sea stars? I'm pretty sure they don't...
(Also, "Echinoderm" means "spiny skin." I just looked it up!)

... ok... the ending of that post just went way over my head. I waved at it as it passed but other than that I didn't even try to think about it.
EDIT: ok now that I look back at it... the latin in it does coem out and make sense.. pod--foot I get it... sect--sections or appendages. Cool. Yup. Just took a second O_O

oO Sorry. I, um, like taxonomy, and I'm trying to remember this stuff myself. And "Kings Play Cards On Fat Green Stools" has been drilled into my brain since who knows when...
Eh, you know what? Taxonomy is confusing, and different sources say different things about whether Crustacea is a class or a subphylum and I am out of date. oO (Just remember that starfish are spiny skinned echinoderms and that lobsters are crustaceans, and you're good.)

I'm not into taxonomy so much. I'm just the medic. You get yourself any kinda booboo, come to me and I'll fix it up. Plain and simple. I like being the medic out in the feild because you're like a god for the infantry guys. They believe anything you tell them. Even if you're just making something up to make them feel better, they will buy it. It's all .... *brain fart* excuse me. I think I hear the beer calling me.

According to Wikipedia, Crustacea is a Subphylum. *sigh* I'm done with the bio review tonight. Too frustrating.
You're so practical, Zephi. :)

By practical I mean hands-on. I'm fretting about how biologists classify sea creatures I almost never encounter, and you're talking about, you know, saving lives.
