I think Australians came up with it, we are always coming up with odd names for people from different countries.

I think the term Kiwi for a New Zealander is because the fruit Chinese Gooseberry (which is a fruit native to New Zealand) was renamed Kiwi by the NZ government as a tourism ploy. And also the national bird is the kiwi.
