I like the simple dc.
I'm just afraid that if I try to make a whovian scarf, someone will come up and think it's a potter scarf instead.

*pokes back in* Long time no see - I've been traveling, and haven't had a lot of time for Menewsha lately. But, I'm sure that there are some fellow travelers amongst you fellow Doctor Who fans, so you know what I mean XD
How is everyone? Enjoying the Chinese New Year?
Rhum - I like the idea of a Whovian scarf =D

It's Sunday for me. I'm currently in China.
It is the Chinese Lunar New Year. The holiday is Chinese is origin, so there is nothing wrong with calling it the Chinese New Year. Actually, it differentiates it from other Lunar New Year traditions - such as in Thailand, where it is celebrated later this spring, in India where it is celebrated in the fall with Diwali, and in Wicca where it is celebrated in the falll with Saimhein, and many others that have a lunar calendar.

Zen, you're in China? Awesome, where have you been traveling? :)
I'm so glad that the New Year celebrations in Soho in London are next weekend rather than this, or at least so I've heard. That means I might be able to go out and enjoy them! I remember I went last year (I didn't actually realise it was the New Year so me and my ex walked into Soho full of people and decorations) and that was the day it started snowing - we saw the first snowflakes while walking in Soho and when we headed back home it was snowing like mad. The next day everything was covered, it was so awesome. :D

Sounds like a lot of fun. I hope you get to enjoy the festivities again this year!
I'm currently doing some traveling around China on my way to a semester study program in the Sichuan Province. I'm excited because I've never been to Sichuan before, but I've wanted to go for years. At the moment, I'm freezing in the northeast while celebrating in a friend's hometown in Shandong Province. It's been fun so far, but I've been struggling with the cold. My hotel room has an inefficient heater, but my friend's house doesn't have any heater at all! Never saw that coming . . . .

That sounds awesome. What are you studying there? I'd love to go to China.. I've sort of recently caught the traveling bug, just made a very good friend who loves traveling and his enthusiasm has affected me so much that we're going to travel together during Easter break. : D Going to Turkey and then hopefully to Egypt.. that's our plan anyway, but we might have to change it if we don't find any cheaper flights back home from there.
And oof, no heater? How cold is it there?

At night, it has been getting down to 0 to -10 C, and during the day it is not much warmer. Yeah - no heater. My friend's family may not have much money, but their TV and DVD player are nicer than my own family's, yet they have no heater. (Mind you, my family has a pretty **** TV, but still.) Complete opposite of where my priorities would be, but none of them seem to mind the cold in the least bit.
I will be studying intensive Chinese language, and Chinese history and religion. I'm trying to improve my Chinese as much as I can before I start grad school in the fall, and Chinese history and religion is my specialty XD
Oooh! Egypt and Turkey? Those are places that I would LOVE to go! I'm excited for you - I hope you have a wonderful trip with your friend! And yes, the travel bug is EXTREMELY contagious and addicting <3

Wow, that's really cold! And, as people keep pointing out to me, I should know about cold.. Strange priorities indeed. I guess you can get used to cold, but still.
Awesome. Have you been studying Chinese for long?
Yeah, neither of us have been to either, or the Middle East at all, so we're really excited! We're thinking about traveling to Egypt by land, going through Syria and Jordan and (possibly) Israel. It would take a couple of days, but it would be so worth it! : D

I only know how to do single, double, half double, treble, and double treble so far. If I had to pick a favorite, I don't think I would be able to because I honestly don't have one. I do find myself trying to do half doubles all the time, though.

I never can get used to cold. Around 28 C and humid is my ideal climate, with not much lower than 15 C. I'm definitely out of my element here, but I couldn't resist the chance to see a traditional Chinese New Year with a good friend. At least Sichuan will be warmer.
I've taken 3 years of college Chinese classes (+ some Classical Chinese, which is grammatically a different language), and have done some independent studying/traveling. I'm around intermediate level currently.
Traveling over land definitely sounds worth it. Definitely see as much as you can while you are in the area!
My friend just showed up and wants to show me a bit more of the city. So I'm off to battle the cold for a few hours (and I hope to eat some dumplings while we are out!) Be back later!

Hah, that again sounds too warm for me. P: My ideal climate is maybe around 20°C and not too humid, and not much lower than 10°C. Though I also love proper winter with cold and snow, definitely wouldn't want the same kind of weather all the time.. I like my seasons! <:
That's cool. So you're able to converse fairly easily in Chinese? Even I am getting tired of hearing myself say this, but I really need to pick up some of the languages I've learned and get back into practice. My mum and my brother came up with the idea the other day that my brother and I go together to France this summer for a month to learn French - my brother's idea. I think it sounds awesome, I hope we can do it!
Yes! Even though Israel might be fairly risky, but we could always take a ferry from Jordan to Egypt. I would absolutely love to go to Jerusalem though, or Tel Aviv..
Have fun! I think I'll go to sleep soon, feeling sleepy..

Back in now. We did eat some dumplings for lunch (although not the best dumplings I've ever had, one of the few restaurants that was still open today because of the holiday), and walked around by the river for awhile. My friend said that when she was little and the ice was thick enough, she used to walk to school on the river, but the ice wasn't that thick today. Meanwhile, my nose is running and my throat is sore, so I hope I am not getting a cold!
Standard Mandarin I can converse in a bit, depending on the subject. But at the moment I'm in an area that has a dialect that I am not used to, and not understanding very well. If I was here a few weeks, maybe I'd be okay, but I won't be here long enough to get the hang of it, even though it is not a very strong dialect by Chinese standards. At least my friend is a good interpreter, but I feel so linguistically incompetent here.
Israel may be risky, but it does have some places that would be interesting to see. Depending on which visas you may need/not need in advance, you may also be able to play some things by ear as you go along.

Zen, hope you're feeling better whenever you read this. If it's cold enough to walk on the ice on the river and the heaters are shit, I'm not surprised if you have a cold. P: How long are you staying there?
I read that there's just as much chance of dying in a car accident as it is dying in a bombing in Israel. It is risky because you never know when and where might be dangerous, but that is also the case, for example, in dodgy neighbourhoods in big cities elsewhere in the world where there might be drive-bys and shit like that. So I'm not too worried. We will have to look at visa stuff and whether we have to book them in advance. Our main problem is getting back, so far the cheapest flight I've found back is from Alexandria, for over £300.. which is too much, really. Sometimes you can get last minute flights cheap, but since we're going back just after Easter, I'd rather not risk getting stranded since there are a lot of people traveling then. Which is probably why the flights are so much more expensive..
Lost, psh, why keep it a secret? I know people with much more stupid celeb crushes. You shouldn't feel ashamed of having a crush on someone.

Oh, don't even GET me started on Pattinson.
Has anyone seen what he's like off set?
He doesn't shave, and his hair looks like he doesn't shower... he looks like a scumbag.
Honestly, if anyone thinks THAT look is attractive, then I worry about the coming generation.

Friend: "but- but...! He's OLD!"
