Oh, that's a great deal then Tsunii! And it is a haul. If I didn't have my car/license here...I'd be out of luck since I live in the country. That and if you want to do anything here, even if you live in a city in my state, you'll need a car.
Oooh. I didn't even think about you guys sharing the SAME pattern. I thought you meant just making the same thing, with your own pattern for it. No, that'd be tricky. It's never easy to fold up the patterns neatly as well, after you're done.
I just try and give myself a deadline for things, even if there is none. Or, if someone asks me to make something, I tell them to give me a deadline. I work well under pressure for crafts. My sister asked me to make a mobile for her new nursery, and I took over a month to sit down one day and just get it done. If she told me to do it in three days, it would have been done LONG before.
I believe in you! Sounds like you're ready to get into it.
I know! I'm so happy that we found that site and got such a good price for it. I see. So if you don't have a car and a licence where you live, then you're kind of screwed? I would not be able to live in a place like that. Not right now at least. I tried to drive with my mom and it went well until we tried it in the day instead of the night. Turns out I get so stressed when I'm gonna do something I'm not used too when there's a lot of people waiting for me to finish, that I freak out and refuse to do it at all. So I won't resume trying to learn how to drive until I find a good deserted place for it.
I guess that we could have solved it by me tracing the right pattern size on transparent paper and then just copy the manual.
I just fold it up following the original creases. Sure it's not as flat as it was before it got used the first time, but at least I don't make any new creases in the paper.
That's actually quite a good idea. Maybe I should try to put up deadlines for those other crafts I'm doing that doesn't have one. Or go with the "I have to finish this craft thingy before I do that next one".
Yes, I am. So back to sewing for me in a little while. I really have to eat first.
Me -> <- Stomach
That's pretty much the long and short of it Tsunii. I was very nervous starting out, so my mom started teaching me young so I'd get the jitters out. Like 14/15 years old. Then I got my permit when I was 16, my dad made me drive on the highway (oh no!!!) and I had to get used to it quick. But, we had a lot of areas in my hometown that were easy to practice in. Is there a business park or something with a nice long stretch of mostly unused road? Or suggest a trip to the country!
I should start tracing my patterns. That'd be smart.
Yes! It's the best when other people give you a time line. But, write a note and pin it up somewhere in plain sight with a *Finish by this day* goal on it.
I'm all for finishing my horns and making little quick business cards tonight, just in case anyone sees the dragon pins I'll be wearing, and wants one.
Well, the thing is that when I got so stressed that I didn't want to do it anymore was when my mom told me to reverse out of a side parking lot and into a single file road. It was coming cars from behind me that had to stop and wait, and that's when I became really stressed. That was the first time I ever tried to reverse. Going forward? No problem. Turning? No problem. Shifting gears? Works kind of good. Just need to learn to hear the different sounds of the motor to now when I'm supposed to shift gear. So, simply, the part with the driving that I've had most problem with so far is reversing. And it's a good place, without any other cars, to train that that I've been looking for.
But yeah, a trip to the country might be a good idea.
I've always had to trace my patterns. Here in Sweden we have patterns printed on both sides of the sheets, so it's kinda hard to use them without tracing them first.
Put up notes everywhere! Yay! I could probably fill my walls with post it notes and still miss the deadline... I'm good at reading notes the first ten times or so that I see them. Then I just get tired and ignore them. Unless they're really important. So is it a deadline note that I'm not getting paid for, then it's not as important as one that I get paid for.
Sweet. So did you manage to get the horns done in time? You make dragon pins? I bet they look awesome!
Also, I'm finally done with edge-stitching the skirt pieces, so later today or early tomorrow I'm going to start putting it together.
Tsunii: Hah. Yah. I remember how I was the worst driver ever. I panicked whenever a truck passed me, I was convinced I'd hit pedestrians. Now I'm the best driver in my family. It took a while to get those jitters out, but thankfully my parents were patient.
Oh. Yikes. Well ok, that'll do it. I guess they assume people here aren't reusing patterns, cause they're printed on different sheets. But I always keep mine unless they get ruined.
Yup! I have a picture of the horns on my friend I can show you:
They look cooler irl, more like leather or something.
Yeah, I just need practice. So I got to find a good desolate place to start practicing the driving again 'til I feel comfortable enough to drive among other cars. Oh, and I need to renew my driver practice permission.
And my mom is really patient with me when we're doing something I haven't learned yet. She even thought that I had practiced driving in secret with some friends the first time she practiced with me. And that was the first time I've driven a car all by myself. I guess all that playing car racing games at least helped a little.
It's kind of sad that they think that. But the pattern sheets I'm used to have patterns for a lot of different clothes on the same sheet, and they're all multisize pattern. I guess the do it for saving paper. That, and most of the patterns we have at home are from sewing magazines, and they can't have too many pattern sheets in them. Also not to make you all confused about what pattern is for which clothing they use different colours on the patterns. Like if you have a pattern sheet with patterns for a shirt, a hoody and a pair of trousers. Then the pattern for the shirt have all lines coloured red, the hoody blue and the trousers green.
And tracing patterns is really nice to do, 'cause then you can alter the pattern if you need without destroying the original pattern. Like now when I made the test skirt I realized that it's way to long and I need to shorten it up. Now I can figure out just how much shorter I need it and change that on the traced pattern instead of having to do it on the fabric afterwards and thus wasting fabric or, god forbid, destroy the original pattern.
It seems that I'm a lot better at sewing than I thought I was. I was applying my first zipper some days ago, with only the sewing manual as help. I had to discuss with my mom first as to what they could mean at one part in the manual, but after understanding it the rest was kind of a piece of cake. When I was done and my mom came back home (she was away while I was sewing), she said she thought it looked like a professional had done it. I also discussed it with my coworkers and they thought all that applying zippers is really hard, while I thought it was quite simple...
Oh, they look so pretty. Both the horns and the pin. Damn, you're good.
Racing games didn't help for me. I always crashed into pedestrians. O.o
That's smart. Do they do it on super thin paper? That's what they rock here. Tissue thin. So, if you rip it. Whoops! I get my patterns this time of year anyways since they're on sale for Halloween. I've destroyed many a pattern and wasted fabric by cutting wrong. But I never waste it for good, cause I'll save it for another project.
Oh nice! Good job on the zipper. Yah, they can be tricky. Sometimes for me, it's nicer to do that by hand. Otherwise I just take the zipper nice and slow so it looks neat. :D
Thank you. They were both fun to do. I pop out a dozen or so of those eyes in a sitting.
Well, I do crash into pedestrians if there are any in the game, but that's on purpose. In other racing games I just end up crashing into walls, deviders, other cars and basicly everything you can crash into. But I still got better with time and now I don't crash as much. But, yeah, somehow it did help me a little when driving for real.
Oh heavens no, it's that that annoyingly silly thin paper as the ones Simplicity use. You usually can't see through the paper. But it's still not as thick as a normal copier paper. But it doesn't rip too easily. I "waste" fabric by cutting wrong too from time to time. But not as much anymore, since I've learned somewhat how to place the patterns properly on the fabric. I also save the small fabric pieces that's left over after I'm finished. They usually come in handy when I want to sew some dolls clothing.
I guess it mostly depends on what kind of zipper and in what way you'll have to sew it, that decides whether it's tricky or not. Mine was just very simple. And it helps having the right kind of foot for the sewing machine. And nice and slow usually makes it look good, even if you would be the worst person at sewing.
That's nice. When I try to do a lot of the same thing in one sitting, I kind of fail and end up doing three or five of the same thing. I'm just too concerned with it looking as perfect as I can get it. Which is very frustrating at times.
And as for an update on the skirt.
I won't be able to do the real blue skirt, since the convention is tomorrow and I haven't even started to cut out the pieces for it. But the test skirt is almost done. I only have to fix the hem and then it's all done. I've even took some time to redesign a blouse that I bought a long time ago and have had on my to do list ever since. I gave it pluffy sleeves instead of the somewhat weird ones it had before. So now I have a whole attire for the steampunkconvention. Oh, I also finished the bustle pillow for the skirt today. My mother got really liked it and got a good laugh when she saw my profile when I tried it on with the skirt, blouse and corset. I did apparently remind her of the evil stepsisters in Disney's Cinderella.
Heyo wow. I haven't been around in a while. Sorry! October is ALWAYS my busiest month >.<
Ohh! I'd love to see pictures of everything Tsunii!!!!
I'm still not even sure what I'm doing for Halloween. Perhaps the March Hare from Alice in Wonderland since i made a top hat with rabbit ears last spring.

Hey Kirin!
Of course I'll post pictures. I just need to get someone to take the pictures for me.
Ah... the "bum roll"? I have to give my bustled skirt more fluff in the back. I might do something like that. The taffeta I used falls a bit flat, since I made faux bustles. Lemme see if I can find a picture of it...
SPOILERX
I have no picture of the back of course. This was for a Mrs. Lovatt's costume from Sweeney Todd.

Nice! I haven't even started on Christmas stuffs......*sigh* But, I might make some of these if I can get my hands on some cabochons and the right wire. I did my first silver wrapped stone today:
Well, Woodla, it's kind of like the "bum roll" but a special designed pillow instead. Maybe I should take a picture of it and post. My skirt is made from a drapery fabric, and it also gets really flat if I don't have the pillow under it.
Oh, if you want to see a picture of the whole clothing set that I had on the steampunk convention then I can post one now. I got the pictures that my friend took during the con.
Really nice work on the wire wrapping. I like the stone and how you spiraled the wire ends.
I'm terrible at finishing what I start, but right now I'm thinking of trying to crochet a capelet. Main motivation is I don't have much in the way of winter clothes and I don't have money either.
That'd be awesome Tsunii! I'd love to see. Gotcha. I should make something similar then, since mine is flat in the back in spite of the bustling.
Thanks! It's a gift for a friend, so I'd be sad if it didn't work out. I guess I should have worked in it earlier....
That's a great idea Paperling. Another fun thing I've seen is repurposing sweaters and stuff from a second hand shop. You can make scarves, a skirt, a capelet, handwarmers... It all depends on the size sweater you buy.
Hi! I'm Pickles and I knit, crochet, sew and partake in origami.
Currently I am.. overwhelmed by all the projects I have going. 12 - 14, depending how deeply buried I want to admit on being.
Most recently [~half a month] finished a fox pouch / coin purse.
