I'd say about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch from where the nail separates from the skin. That's about the length that I try to keep mine. Too long and they become unruly; too short and the polish doesn't look quite so nice.

@jelly: Yeah, I'm sure the ones in that picture are false. For as long as I can remember, though, my great aunt has had those kinds of nails naturally, though. About three times as long as the ones in the picture as well. XP I would not want them to be as long as hers, but the length in the picture is good for me.

They could be natural with a gel polish put on.
Often, gel polish gives just enough thickness to suggest or imply a fake tip.

I like having my nails long but I generally have to keep them short. I find it hard to take my contacts out when I have longer nails.

I have some navy blue matte polish that I quite like. It's a nice change from the normal shiny or glittery look.

I've never used matte polish! I always go for glossy.

I'm not very good with applying polish though, so I really go for fake nails. I love those things. I can do so much nail art on them. I really love the decoden sort of nails, where there's jewels and pearls on them. I wear that kind when I dress in lolita.

This has nothing to do with nailpolish but I love your avatar!

I recently bought two nail polishes, one from Essie called Eternal Optimist, and than the other one is by L'oreal called "Now you sea me." I'm wearing the L'oreal one and it really stayed on without a top coat. It's been like a good two weeks now.

@zigbigadorlube Thanks!

Vinyl: I like! Are they blood splatterings? I was going to try out something like that this year.

I'm trying some fake nails for the first time. I got them as a free sample but they got some really bad reviews so I'm not sure how they will hold up but they are doing okay for now. I'll let you know what I think of them in a few days.

Happy Halloween-eve everyone.

I tried out the blood splatter nails myself! I wanted to try using cling film (saran wrap?) and I swear it is so quick, easy and effective; I wish I'd tried it earlier. Here is a relatively bad/okay quality picture that I took from a webcam. Hope you like!

How did you do it? You just put a few dabs on the cling wrap and then stuck it against your nail?

I put little dabs of nail polish onto the nail first (I thought that that might be the less messy way to do it) and then used a little bit of cling film and dabbed it against the nail, pushing it around a little bit and dabbing again to the desired places. If you used enough nail polish, there will be some left on the cling film that you can just go ahead and dab onto other fingers. Maybe the smaller nails, so that you don't go overboard with the colour if you have little nails.

Just found this pick of Essie's winter collection:

---------- Post added 11-04-2012 at 12:23 AM ----------

Also, it's time for that fake nail product review!

Some time ago I got a free handout for some press-on nails:

I read the reviews and they made it out to be a terrible product but with hurricane Sandy hitting us here in NYC, I really had nothing to do and decided to give them a try.

Each bottle comes with multiple sizes. All you have to do is pick out the sizes you need, wipe your nails with the alcohol prep pad, peel off the clear tab to reveal the adhesive inside the fake nail and stick them on! Sounds simple enough right? Most of the reviews I read said that their nails popped off in a matter of hours but mine lasted all week with no problem. I actually took them off simply because I was getting tired of them, not because of any problems. Maybe the people who had trouble didn't press down firmly to apply? I pressed on each nail for about 30 seconds just to be sure.

As for removal, you can either use nail polish remover (which from what I've seen is a very messy process) or simply peel them off. I used a cuticle pusher tool and wedged it under the nail by the cuticle and just sort of pried them off. It wasn't too hard really. My nails weren't really damaged or anything underneath either.

My only hesitations about the product are that you have to have fairly short nails to apply them and that the plastic at the edge of the nail is pretty thick which makes it hard to actually grip things or scratch an itch, etc. Also, one other thing is that the plastic at the tips can be a little uneven so you might want to file them a tiny bit to get rid of any sharp edges. Towards the end of the week the tips were getting a tiny bit beat up but you couldn't really see it except upon really close inspection.

The best part about them is that the look very natural. I got quite a few compliments about them and people were very surprised to find out that they were appliques.

Here are some photos:

These are the first fake nails I've ever worn so I may not be the best judge of things but they seemed pretty good to me.

Does the package have a brand name to it? Or was it just some random nameless thing you picked up at a drug store?
