O_O omgosh... you guys sleep waaaay too much. You'll regert it later on. When you get older and wonder where all the time went, you slept it away that's where it went! :illgetu: You can function just fine off of 3 hours of sleep. When you sleep too long you put your body into a hybernation mode and you store more food and your body starts to break down your muscles for storage.

That's not true. You body ALWAYS breaks down fat before muscle. And you need WAY more than 3 hours. Studies have proven you need at least 6. Where did you get your information from, Zephi? And I don't think of sleep as a waste of time at all. I think of it as keeping my brain sharp.

nah, I don't think so.........I sleep a lot during the day because I'm up most of the night....I go to bed at like 4am in the morning.
so my days are just criss-crossed with everyone.
and what else am I supposed to do if I do sleep a lot? T3T
I'm in a college thats out near nowhere and I have no car XP
plus I've done all my homework and all my friends are busy.........there's nothing to do BUT sleep ^^'

(well, thats my excuses XDD)

Nope. You can function just fine off of 3 hours. Sure 6 is ideal but you are talking about sleeping for 10! What the heck. It is wasted time. I myself would prefer to be a semi-insomniac. If the world would just cater more to people who had less sleep, a lot more things would get done. Darn civilians are so lazy.... <.<

I didn't say anything about breaking down fat either. The only way to do that is to exercise. And you sure can't do that in bed... unless.... well... I'll just assume that you're not XD

@Zephi: WELL, I think you should look at this:
Quote:
Diabetes and sleep problems often go hand in hand. Diabetes can cause sleep loss, and there’s evidence that not sleeping well can increase your risk of developing diabetes
I got this off of webmd, a medical site:
The Link Between Sleep and Diabetes

@Kings: ha ha that too XDD it's my heartless Sora.........closest I could get with menewsha! ^^

Web MD is a crock. I'm serious. I hate when people come in to me and are self-diagnosed. That gets so old. And you can't just develope diabetes unless you have a TERRIBLE diet or it runs in your family.

I have bipolar, so I need more sleep than most people otherwise I get manic, not good. Also, 6 isn't IDEAL, it's the minimum you need to function semi-normally. YOU may only need 3, but almost everyone else needs more. Also, it's NOT wasted time. Studies have proven (it was featured on PBS, but I can get a link if you like) that getting sleep increases memory retention, learning capabilities and helps recharge your brain. When you don't get enough sleep your memory becomes fuzzy. You NEED enough sleep.

Right there is where you talk about breaking stuff down. Maybe that's not what you meant, but that's how it sounded.

well, I'm not self diagnosting (or whatever you call it) I'm just saying there have been studies like that, that have supported it that have REAL results, so sleep is important to the human body and not having enough can cause some serious damage later on!

I meant that of course your body isn't going to break down fat, that's already stored. Hybernation makes FAT. And fat burns really slowly over time in hybernation.

There are new studies every day. All you can really do is give your body what it needs. Just laying in bed all day is lazy though. I didn't say that I get 3 hours of sleep, just that you can function just fine off of it. Your body can adjust to just about anything and it's amazing what a person can live through. I can't tell you... but... its amazing. Living and being alive are two different things. i mean... its just me but I don't want to be in bed all day unless I come back from a particuarly long mission or something like that. But I still have to take care of myself, eat, and shower. If I can't take care of myself how am I supposed to take care of my troops? I cant. Being a medic I have to be in top physical condition. Maybe if you woke up a little earlier and worked out you would be happier fairy. Working out releases those hormones that you are lacking by being bi-polar. Or there are foods you can eat. I forget what the chemical is that you need but they make special vitamins with this chemical also. Increases the happiness in your brain ^^

Hibernation doesn't MAKE fat, although the act of not exercising in general will, if that's what you mean. But if you exercise when you ARE awake, then you could still lose weight. The very fact that you're sleeping doesn't make you gain weight. Also, if you don't eat, you lose weight. Which is why bears eat so much before had, to prepare for the weight they will lose. So technically sleeping ALL the time makes you lose weight, not gain it.

You don't function well off it though. Have you ever gone more than a few nights with out more than 3 hours of sleep? Your mental acuity starts to fade! You start to lose focus. It's dangerous. And you can't live like that for long.

There are things I can do, and I am on medication, but I find sleep is pretty effective. And I can't help it, my body gets very tired when I don't get enough sleep. I HAVE to sleep, even being on lithium. And I do exercise, every day. But I think my body is just naturally designed to need more sleep than yours.

Gyah... hybernation takes the muscle and turns it into flab, and then bones. It's hard to know if I'd take food or sleep first but probably sleep. i've gone for a long time with only 3 hours of sleep! They expect you to do it for 9 wweeks in basic training! Haha.. it's not fun. I know. But I'm still alive, and its an experience. I guess... *sigh* I dunno. I wish I was an insomniac and only slept for like an hour every night. I'm deploying next friday and there's so much more I want to do, sleep just cuts out more time that I could be doing other things. I'll sleep when I'm dead. I've got things to do! I love being up early, at least when it's warm. Makes my day feel so productive. Not everyone is like this, I know... I'm just saying that most people sleep a lot more than they need to. maybe you're not one of those people but most do. I mean, studies have shown that sleeping 8 or more hours a night makes you get cancer. I don't buy into all these studies but that's one that I heard. I think they are retarded. They said, milk is bad for you, no it's good, no orange jiuce is bad, no wait it's good, sleep more, no no, we mean sleep less, but don't eat red meat! I think it's ridiculous what our gov't spends money on. I want to run a stupid study and come out with useless information. <.<

what? hibernation takes muscles?! I did not know that! and gee, I hope that's wrong cause I sleep A LOT over the weekends. I feel pretty bad when I waste most my day, but I feel worse if I don't sleep a lot. I stay up late though so it kinda evens out. kinda...

Meh... everyone needs different things. Still... 6 hours is ideal for most people. Some people naturally sleep more or less.

You know that when you die you will have been asleep for atleast 1/3 of your life... that's a lot of wasted time, at least to me

Well, it's lack of exercise. Technically if you were a sleep walker you wouldn't lose muscle. And I sleep a lot on the weekends too. I also generally stay up later though. I just wish I could sleep when I get to school, because I'm sitting around waiting for 4 or 5 hours for class to start....

You'll also spend about 3 years on the toilet. (At least I think it's three. It might be two. Or four. Whatever.) That's why I read in there. I'm currently reading the Annotated Alice.

See, I think the main thing is you view sleep as wasteful, rather than beneficial. There's a reason that all mammals and birds sleep. If it wasn't helpful it would have died out, as sleeping is rather dangerous in the wild. It could get you eaten! The benefits out weigh the risks. It makes your brain better. That's why babies sleep so much. Not because they don't have anything else to do, but because they're building new connections in their brains. Anyways, that's what I think. But whatever.

*leaps away from kat and grabs a rope ladder that dropped from a helicopter* Haha!

I know that my sister will have spent much longer than 3 years on the toilet. She will go in there and generally comes our about 6 hours later. I don't understand that either. I only go to the bathroom when I have to go. I know lots of people read there. And the average person will have spent 6 months of their life at red lights. I hate red lights. I just want to do things. I'm kinda in hybernation mode now. More like couch potato mode though. As soon as I get back from the deployment though, I'm going on a cruise, and going sky diving and gonna break in my mountain bike and paintball gun. Go camping and canoeing. I just prefer to be active. I might stay up all night tonight. And clean tomorrow... and then stayup that night too. Hmm...
