I can understand where hes comming from, im a very solitary person myself, but having some time apart may bring you closer too. youll value your together time more.

Yes, not everyone gets the snide humour for some reason. I have the same problem myself. They either miss the 'tongue in cheek' part of your statement, or they take you seriously or get offended by what is said...
